Unable to Read Disc Error
I installed FFXI and the PlayOnline viewer. I installed all the updates, and restarted my xbox360. I inserted the FFXI disc and an error comes up "unable to read disc". I purchased FFXI yesterday and purchased my Xbox360 about 3months ago.

I still have a " unable to read disc error" what do I do? Should I uninstall the PlayOnline viewer and reinstall it, if so how do I do that?

Do all other games run okay?

If a trash talker is muted, did he/she ever say anything?

Well to delete installed games, you just have to manage the memory/storage in the settings part of the Xbox Dashboard.
Try your idea with deleting it and reinstalling it. Also, the disc is clean right? no smudges or scratches?

The disc is fresh out of the case.

Re: Unable to Read Disc Error
There is a major bug that is causing this problem to occur. It's due to some bad programming either by Square-Enix or Microsoft (they both blame each other).

The only way to resolve this issue currently is to perform a "Clear System Cache" on your Xbox Hard Disk. Please be advised that doing so will completely erase PlayOnline and Final Fantasy XI. After you have done so, re-install everything again. You will be able to play as you would normally.

This error only seems to pop up sometimes after you exit the game. A few members have said shutting off the Xbox 360 by holding down the power button on the Xbox instead of clicking "Shutdown or Log off" helps prevent this. But there is also a chance it will corrupt your data.

Basically this is a huge mess and hopefully it gets resolved very soon.

Re: Unable to Read Disc Error
Hey guys,

I just bought my 360 a week ago along with FFXI.  I've been playing FFXI for Ps2 for years and just wanted to switch platforms.  After playing for about a week, I got this same error message stating the disc was unreadable.  At first I thought it was just a bad copy of the game, so I exchanged it for a new copy and was still having the same issue.  The XBox hotline was absolutely no help, so I turned to the net to see if anyone else was having these problems.  Thankfully, I found this post.  However, I have already tried clearing out my cache multiple time but it had no effect on this problem.  I'm noticing you said that clearing the cache would erase everything.  Did you mean Formatting the hard drive?  I know this will erase everything on the hard drive, but don't want to take this step unless absolutely necessary.  Please clarify this for me, as I am at my wits end with this all.

Thanks.

Re: Unable to Read Disc Error
Every once in a while the xbox will just decide it doesn't like FFXI anymore and stop reading the disk. can be 3 hours or 3 months, but it's always happened to me ever since the stupid dashboard update. You need to format the disk and redo the 5+ hour install of POL and FFXI with all it's updates. Also, you can never only erase FFXI since it isn't listed like a normal game will be. Your hard drive will show about -10GB from its cap, you you wont see any files for FFXI in data management. You have to erase EVERYTHING

Re: Unable to Read Disc Error
please try this before you erase all you data

ok i think i may have stumbled accross a fix. do hold me to this but the other day i shutdown ffxi but the xbox froze and i had to turn it off at the mains. so i thought to myself oh hell no im not going through another 6hrs of downloads so rung round some mates to see if they were free for me to do the two 360 trick. managed to arrange with a mate to do this but i was messing around on xbox marketplace trying to dl some demos when i decided to play my ipod through my 360. i was listening to 2001 dr dre(what a class album i must add) and was looking through the memory settings but when i came out of the option i pressed the eject disc option by accident and then selected the close disc tab. i listened to the xbox warm up twice and on the third attempt prepared for dissappoitment and anger but to my suprise the message came up explaining playonline was not shut down properly and that this can cause corrupt data so i clicked start playonline and heypresto it worked. this is the first time i tried it whilst listening to my ipod and i dont want to try it again just incase it doesnt work but if anyone has this problem i suggest trying this, whats the worst that can happen.

Re: Unable to Read Disc Error
I've had this problem also it happen when you improperly exit for the Play Online viewer. You must ALWAYS either goto shutdown from Final Fantasy online back to the dash board to turn the system off or switch games or log out of FFO then fully exit out of the Play Online viewer back to the dashboard to switch games or turn the sytem off. You can use the programing error to your benifit if you get the disc read error. Just go into the xbox prefrences and choose the clear cashe option. It will take the Play Online viewer off your xbox then you just re-install it again. Take time but it works.
