One of the Best of All Time

Just finished my first ever playthrough of Rez, and it has to be easily one of the best games i've ever experienced, right up there alongside, Zelda: OOT and Final Fantasy 7. I think I just really 'got' the game, despite not being a fan of electro music, the art direction is the real winner, its stunning. Then underlying this is a self indulgent depressed computer program who knows the real 'truth', what this truth is, is dependant on your interpretaton of the game, my take on it was the inhererent loneliness humans suffer from as the realization sets in that you are alone in yourself and always will be and this has perhaps dawned upon this conscious AI, seeking some form of 'truth' or reason for its existance and cronic loneliness it comes up short, leaving it in a cold and depressed state, hence the final boss level and battle being about creation and spirtualisation.

So to conclude awesome game, if you havn't played it yet do so now, its the best on the 360 right now.

P.S. Stage 5 is my new favorite level in all of gaming beating out Goldeneyes Facility level.

This game took over me and several people i know back when we got it for Dreamcast. Area 5 is in my top 3 gaming experiences of single player variety. This game is a gem, and always has been. And I had no problem paying for it, just to be able to play it in HD.

Re: One of the Best of All Time
The first time I played stage 5, when the dirty, heavy bass line came in and the view swung around to look backwards to reveal all the giant floating trilobite-looking things - I almost wept with awesome.  Definitely one of the most memorable moments for me in games, TV, film, or any other kind of media.

so everyone agrees, stage 5 is gaming divinity.
my "stage 5 moment" is probably trite, but right when you rise above the clouds, and the gated violins come in, and the scale of the level just shoots up once more... it's ambrosia.

What'd you fink, erfling? Bloody game got me, line hook n' sinker! I like music games and techno though, so that helps.  Now I just need to figure out what exactly to shoot at in the boss sections (stuck on #2)

I love eden as much as the next guy but nothing gets me like the URANUS boss when the hard guitar riffs start kicking in.  It really doesn't get old.

This is exactly what I thought they programmer was going for, a playable cyberspace from neuromancer. Good call.

I agree with all the comments in here. This game is a gaming experience, i love it. Also, I could be mistaken, but the more play certain things seem different. Like the background detail on the final boss seems different, also when i first started playing the first boss only had one ring before you finally defeat it, it now has 2 rings?

thats one of the harder forms for getting over 95% shot down before you get to the boss.  there are harder forms for 95% and 98% shot down respectively.  I didnt know that either until I came to these forums.

Re: One of the Best of All Time

Man, I was going to start a similar thread! Beat me to it.

This game is what I imagined all games of the future would look like when i was 10. (25 years ago...ahem...).

It is without doubt the best experience I've had yet with my 360! I love techno/trance music anyway (see my sig)and with these outstanding visuals....well, my mind has been blown and I havent even got to level 5 yet (I've still got to get 100% analyzation on level 3).

I have to say that when the music from level 4 started, the hairs on the back of neck just refused to come back down.  That Level 4 boss....Wow!

I pray to the gaming gods that there'll be DLC for this in the future.....In the mean time I shall roll another bifta and fire this baby up. LETS 'AVE IT LARGE!!

Yeah the running man is the highlight of  the game for me.

I also like the music on level 3, how it has little voice snippets which change "creation" etc. But i have a question, does one of those voices (I think its level 3 stage4) say "any focker" or some swearing variant? If its not swearing then what does it say?

So overall, I think level 3 is my favourite.

But I agree, its one of the best of all time.

dude, which disc is that pic on?  you know, i think i spelled drool, drule on a message board once.  sorry, random though. lolz

i'm gonna check out this demo when i get home tonight.  haven't checked out a demo for an arcade game in a while.  i'm a little jaded after my second 360 broke and down went 35 arcade games.  can only play them online, which isn't a big deal, but my play is limited to mostly off line for the past and probably future couple of months. :(

id definetly have to agree also that this is one of the greatest games ever. heck, its not even complicated theres not TOO much of a story/characters, the gameplay is limited.....yet.... i manages to be better than 90% of games out there. this is because, theres a certain charm to this game. Its like was said in the first post, this game can be interpreted any way you want it pretty much. everyone will view this game differently.  And i know almost everyone likes Area 5, but me personally i love Area 4...  at about Level 7 or so, it starts setting up the music for the 'running man' boss.  and when he finally shows up omg......its amazing.

There is so much to love about this game. I'm not even going to bother trying to list my thoughts.

I will say however its made me want to change direction with my own tunage. I doubt my knowledge will be up to the task, but it won't stop me trying.

Its the level transitions and changes in the music on area5 that have me inspired the most. Top stuff!

I agree totally about Area 4 music, I think I found myself gurning from the point the music breaks down like you say from about lvl 6 or 7 and then the running man boss music itself........just fantastic. Level 5 was a bit of a disappointment after that music-wise. Still good though but after the awsomeness of Area 4 it didnt quite grab me. Perhaps it was because after the straight 4/4 kick drums of the previous Areas, a breakbeat track seemed an odd choice.

tell me about it.

coming from breakcore and trying to make hard trance just doesn't happen.  everything turns out dull and plodding instead of driving and hypnotic.
level 5 is audiovisual divinity.  the transition between earth and the sky, when the strings kick... inspiration doesn't even begin to describe.

however, on a slightly related note, if you make your own tunes (primarily electronic of some variant) i can't recommend e4 highly enough.  syncing it to an album of your own work is an amazing way to re-enjoy your art :)

I still think I have a lot to grasp, and need to play the game over serveral times to really understand and try to analyze the deeper themes throughout it. I'm stuck right now at the end of Stage 3's boss, but since the first time I tried the signature Trance Vibration, I've been hooked. I can't wait to get to the highly acclaimed Stage 5, I'm sure it will live up to the expectations!

Agreed! first started playing and thought it looked a bit dodgy and what a waste of money. However the game is amazing and so intense towards the end!! Thought it was a bit limited with 4 levels also, but then unlocked the 5th and then beyond, and with all the score attacks to keep you coming back. Easilly worth 800. Classic game!

I have been playing games for about 20 years now and am very rarely amazed by them.

But Rez HD blew me away so much that i actually felt emotional whilst playing it.

Every time i think i have a favourite stage i change my mind, but so far i think Stage 5 is the best, both visually and musically.

This game is a game that every gamer needs to play before they die.
