my wife just got the sharpshooter achievement and i was wondering if anyone else has it.

I got it over a year ago but I seem to remember it being very luck based and extremely aggravating.

Yep, that pretty much sums it up. I was one of the lucky ones, it only took me a couple of hours but for many, it takes ages.

And how did you do it?  Aim at the first color you saw that matched your ball color?  If so did everything else take care of itself after that one ball or did you have to shoot a couple?  Just wondering since I've yet to get this achievement and the 2 million point one.

If I recall, I fired 2 shots, the 2nd one was actually a misfire but it was the last one required for a set of 3 to keep the combo going and knock the other balls off the screen.

Basically, yeah, it's pretty much luck. Just pick a spot, fire and hope for the best.
