pick up some battles? whats that mean
i asked this on the gamefaqs forums and people just guessed and their answers were wrong. Im hoping maybe someone here knows the answer

I was wandering around town and got a message about picking a specilization for emma and Baulson, ok, fine. Torgal also wanted to gank an item.

I wandered around some more and got a couple of messages, one from emma one from baulson, theyw ere as follows:

Emmaa
"say, rush, you look unoccupied. How about we pick up some battles, hmm? Just a little something to work the kingks out.
ANSWERS:
sounds like a plan
ahhh, kinda busy, sorry

Baulson:
Rush, if you've got a moment, lets fight a bit outside of town, shall we? Trainin's the most important part of being a mercenary, you know!
ANSWERS:
Sounds like a plan
Ahh, kinda busy, sorry.

Now i have no idea what the hell these do. i tried answering yes and no and nothing happens. It was sugested to me that this is the message that they are upgrading their weapons, but thats not the case. The stats are the same before and after the message

Emmas weaopns: Emmas long sword 22 atk
emmas tusk: 18 attack

Baulsons weapon: Combat trident +1-42 atk

i loaded an earlier save and checked, and even started a new game and looked at emmas weapons stat in the training cave. It had the same stats and name.

It was sugested that i needed to go fight a battle to activate it. I went and fought a couple of fights on the plains and nothing happened. Went back to town, nothing.

Im lost. What the heck do these messages mean? Im getting frustrated as i cant find any info on the wiki site or anywhere, and i dont feel like playing a game that gives you no info on stuff like this. Hopefully someone here can shed some light on the subject? The games shelved untill i canf igure it out i guess

Re: pick up some battles? whats that mean
the short and sweet answer is that your party members need items to upgrade their weapons.

If they're asking you to go fight this means they just upgraded their weapon.

If they're asking for specific items then that means they need said item to upgrade their weapon.

In my tips thread I have a link to a spreadsheet that details this out for everyone.

Also after battles certain ppl will ask for certain items..  let them have them ALWAYS!

Re: pick up some battles? whats that mean
ya i know about them asking for items. I.e. torgal asking for the bracelet because it was better than his accessory. Im also aware of them asking for items to upgrade their weapons. This was neither of those. Its just like i said above they gave that specific message randomly while wandering through town.

you said
"If they're asking you to go fight this means they just upgraded their weapon. "

but i clearly said that that is NOT the case. I checked the weapon stats/name and as i said they were exactly the same as before.  I even started a brand new game and compared emmas to her stats at the training cave.

I'll read your tips guide but obviously this message does not mean they upgraded their weapons. Do you know what it does mean? Someone on the other forum sugested its just them saying i need to go lvl because im low for that part of the game.. but i seem to be about the right lvl, enemies arent giving me trouble and i fight most of the mobs i see one at a time, skipping a few of the weaker ones. Is it possible thats what the message really means?

ya im not worrying about grinding, im just trying to figure out WTF is going on. The game doesn't give good direction on anything and this message/what it does makes zero sense to me. Its obviuosly not about a weapon upgrade like the guy above says

It means exactly what I said, (your not low level for that part of game but low level for your weapon upgrade)

NOW.

2 factors that might be preventing you from actually obtaining the upgrade is your low BR (raise it) or your low on gold.

some insight behind this from the wiki.

Battle Rank Effects

BR effects on XBOX 360

  • Increased BR effectively decreases the rewards for fighting monsters.
  • Increased BR increases enemy stats, most notably, HP.
  • Increased BR causes enemies to use improved versions of their techniques.
  • Increased BR enables various unit enhancements, including weapon upgrades and access to new skill sets.
  • Increased BR allows access to various additional recruits, notably a large number of soldiers.

The current weapon upgrades is based off Xbox360 version of the game. Since in the 360 version, leaders don't ask for that many variety of weapons, the upgrade tree is very simple and don't branch out as much as the PC version.

[edit] Notes

This is only a general indication of the outcome weapon tree. Other factors might have an effect of the outcome and the exact way how this works is unknown.

The following are confirmed:

  • Using mostly arts that contradict the choosen path might change the outcome.
  • All strength upgrades (the +1, +2, ...) will be lost when an "illegal upgrade" (one where no direct upgrade exists between the two weapons) is used.

Some unknown factors:

  • If you went different route both times when they asked during the game.
  • How it will affect the weapon upgrade when they asks for weapon that on your upgrade path.
  • How it will affect the weapon upgrade when they asks for weapon that's not on your upgrade path.
  • Some bugs like when Torgal asks for Leraje Princeps and a lot of people got stuck with it for rest of the game.

[edit] How it works - Xbox360

All soldier and leader will upgrade their weapon at a target Battle Rank using the components and gold obtained.

  • If enough components and gold then upgrade at target BR.
  • If not enough components but got extra gold, then when you visit town you buy the missing components automatically and upgrade at target BR.
  • If not enough component and gold, then it will sell unequipped weapon to buy components and upgrade at target BR.
  • If still not enough gold after weapon has been sold, then they will borrow money to upgrade at later BR and gold falls to 0g.

All I can say is get more gold and raise a few BR's and check your weapons again.  I can't say for sure this will fix your issue but maybe It'll help in some way.  Not many know every little detail on how this game works, I knew enough to nearly 1k the game (just lazy with the last 3 xheevo's - took 3 months of gametime to finish, i had to restart on disc 2 which promted my rant of a tips thread.  lol)

hope this helps my friend...  stick with it, its really a gem of an RPG IMO.
