Colonies is basically the Directors cut of Extreme Condition. Single player wise it has the very same levels, cutscenes, weapons, characters and difficulties, and even the tokens you have to collect are in the same spots in all the levels. However, Colonies has remastered lighting so certain areas like caves have a new effect that makes the walls look really shiny, and everything has just been touched up a little bit to make it look better. It's not a huge leap, but it's still really nice.
Also, Extreme Condition only had the regular campaign, but Colonies edition has the regular campaign as well as extra challenge modes. "Score Attack" gvies everythign a point value and lets you run through the campaign while attempting to accumulate a huge score and "Boss Battle" is a unique mode that lets you face off against the different bosses encountered throughout the campaign one after another, with who you end up facing depending on how fast or slowly you beat the previous opponent.
Multiplayer wise, there are also several key differences. . . .
Levels- The original Extreme Condition had a few maps that came with the game as well as extras that you had to download, however Colonies has all the extra maps built into the game, (with remastered lighting and everything) as well as several new ones!
Game Modes- Extreme Condition had Team Elimination, Elimination, Post Grab & Fugitive. Colonies has all those modes, as well as Akrid Hunt, VS Annihilator, Egg Hunt (Solo and Team), and Counter Grab
Weapons- On top of including all the original weapons from Extreme Condition, colonies has a bunch of extra weapons like the VS laser, Missle Pod, Revolver, Flamethrower, and two other Pistols that i can't remember the names of (one of them fires explosive rounds!) Colonies also has extra grenades on top of the originals, such as the Energy Grenade (which lets you instantly knock enemies out of their mechs and do a good deal of damage) and Flame grenades, which explode in a huge burst of flame and deal a LOT of damage.
Also, on Extreme condition you worked towards a max level of 100 Online, but on Colonies the experience system has been adjusted so you can go all the way to level 200! Plus, Colonies has a new Medal system that rewards you with medals at the end of each match such as "Killed 10 opponents in one game" "3 grenade kills" "killed five opponents without dying" which all add o your experience and give you something extra to collect. The experience system has also been completely revamped so you can level up to 100 a helluva lot faster on Colonies compared to Extreme Condition.
Characters- in Extreme Condition you had the original 3 snow pirate bodies to select from, as well as 4 more that you can unlock as you level up. This included a nevac soldier, 2 alternate snow pirates, as well as Yuri, one of the starring character in the Campaign. In Colonies, however, you can unlock all the other characters except for Yuri, who for some odd reason seems to absent from the Colonies edition. It's not that big a deal though, because Colonies has several extra characters to unlock on top of the originals. 2 Female snow pirate characters (the first playable female characters to be featured in the game) a cool looking cyborg, and the lead character from capcoms other game "Dead Rising". (who for some sick reason is dressed in nothing but boxer shorts!)
In essence, Colonies edition is the best pick for your money, as it offers far more Single player and Multiplayer content for you to be occupied with. If achievements are what you're going for though, then that's the only area where the original Extreme Condition is a little better, as it's a lot easier to get achievements for the game, being that most of them are campaign oriented, and what little is left for multiplayer is easily boostable (I was able to get a friend of mine the full 1000 on Extreme Condition in just two days of playing, which I've yet to do in colonies, as the Multiplayer achievements are a lot more time consuming, as well as the new single player modes being just a little complicated) the achievments in Colonies seem more campaign oriented for the most part, which can be a problem if you want a game you can breeze through quickly, unless you've got a lot of friends to boost with. However, if you want a game that has a ton of replay value and an active community then Colonies is definitely a great choice.
