I went around to all 8 of the GameStops in my area and asked the employees a simple question "Are you actually a gamer?". I asked 19 and only 7 said they play games often. 2 said sometimes. 10 said they do NOT play games.

No wonder people have such bad experiences in GameStop.

To the best of my knowledge, every GameStop employee that I have spoken to is an avid gamer. I guess it just depends. What may be true for your area is not necessarily true for others' areas.

Ive met allot of people at eb games canada that didnt have internet or didnt play games at all not all of them knew what they were talking about either

but they should know something about games, as you stated you have a friend that helps you buy good games. People go in looking for advice and can and do get bad advice because the person has no idea what they are talking about.

I used to work there.
    The crappy customer service experience is not directly because of the employees at your local store. It is practically company policy. If the employee does not hound every customer and convince them to buy 2 or more pieces of merchandise to every customer, and a solid number of pre-orders and pre-owned sales ------------------------- THEY LOSE THEIR JOB! No joke. It's why I left the company. I wanted to help fellow gamers find the games they really wanted. After Gamestop swallowed EB Games, they hammered on all the employees to treat all the customers like walking cash vending automatons with no will.

They are not required to be gamers. Having said that, my GameStop employees are definitely gamers.

No. The major problem is people getting made over trade-ins. That has nothing to do with the employees being gamers or not. If I go into a movie rental place and ask the employee if they're a movie buff and they say no, my experience with renting a movie will not change at all.

While it's usually nice to have store employees who know what they're talking about, and who can offer actual advice based on experience and knowledge, it's not really THAT big of a deal. I mean, when I go into a store to buy something, I've usually done a bit of research or reviewed it beforehand... or I just make my own mind up in the store.

Don't get me wrong. I like the help when I go into the game stores in my area. They aren't all pushy about it, but they're able to help when I ask (with the exception of a few of the older employees who havn't gamed a day in their lives).

Just remember... it's just a job. Sometimes it's just people trying to find work wherever they can. They may have experience in retail, but not with the games they sell.

Annoying though it may be, helpful it is. *clears throat* I'm sorry I was talking through this cheap Yoda voice changer. The Edge card really is neat if you like to save money but if you're the kind of person who doesn't think a few dollars matter you shouldn't even have the card. That last part wasn't directed at you but rather anyone who's thinking about getting one.

So you really drove around and did this survey.  I would have rather spent my time gaming if you ask me but thanks for the info I guess.  Not really surprised as most gamestop employees spew nonsense all of the time.  Not all but most.  Few of them actually have a clue what they are talking about.

I dont really care if they know what they're talknig about. I know what I'm looking for when i go into EB games here in canada and if i don't i can go online and find out. As long as they can help me find it in the store and aren't obnoxious I'm satisfied.

The Gamestop I go to has some really helpful employees which is a blessing. Like most retail jobs the amount you know about the games doesn't always include playing them. I can't see them expecting the person to be up on every game or every console. If the person is savvy enough to know what types of games they are, the ratings and the rating system it's really all that I would expect them to know.

Ironically I ended up helping a guy in line who was stuck on a Wolverine level. The guy was giving the clerk a hard time because he couldn't help him so I stepped in. In the end I told the guy that not every employee plays every game in the store and left it at that.

No it is an observation, the title of the thread is not attacking gamestop and he did not attack gamestop in the comments, the only thing that might be taken as that is the last statement of " no wonder people have so many problems at gamestop " but that is not really an attack.

Obviously a lot of you missed my point. I was simply making an observation as to why some people might have problems with GameStop. I have no gripe with GameStop personally and buy most of my gaming stuff there.

Sorry if I misjudged you but there's so many anti-GameStop threads around and it seemed like you were trying to subtly attack them.

I know this all too well.  Between my best friend and myself we have been trying to get a job at our local gamestop for years now and though the manager knows that the both of us are very knowledgeable in the field, neither of us have been given half a chance at a job there.  However there is always a new complete idiot who knows nothing about what he is selling and has an attitude to represent the fact that he really has no desire to be there.

Well I try to figure out why people have so many problems with theml, I've never had any problems with GameStop and since I know a lot about video games I've never needed to really ask them for anything. I just thought this might shed some light on some of the problems other people face.

True, I've applied to multiple stores and on the application there is even a field for all your gaming knowledge. Seems kinda silly to put that on there if your going to hire non-gamers anyway.
