Re: Top Ten FPS Games of All Time - Our list
I dont think that list is very accurate, I think most games there shouldent be on that list and half life 2 shouldent be number 1.

Wolfenstien 3D, Duke Nukem 3D and Doom 2 shouldent be there. Sure they were good for there time but put Doom next to bioshock every 1 would pick bioshock because it has a deeper story and you can really get into it
and has unique gameplay that all fans of FPSs would like. Wolfenstien 3D, Duke Nukem 3D and Doom 2 are just run and gun games which was ok when games were still young but you need a story to keep the gamers interested
I havent played Duke Nukem 3D but i played a demo and im sure its better than Doom 2.

Halo 2 couldent posibly be on any top ten list could it, I thought that it was one of the biggest let downs of video game history wasnt it? up there with fable 2 and many others. Halo 1 should be on there replaceing halo 2. Halo 2 had alot of hype but because it was such a let down halo 3 had next to no hype at all the only reson i got halo 3 was cas it droped $20 in price the next day.

Rainbow six vegas is a good game but isnt vegas 2 better i didnt finish vegas 1 so i wouldent know.

People say Goldeneye is the best FPS of all time i disagree, Ive played it, it was good but Perfect Dark is better more gun and bots really give its multi-player that replayability it has im gona buy the arcade version on 360 first day it comes out a steady frame rate will make perfect dark more enjoyable than b4 but judgeing from the screenshots i have my doubts about the controls for it.

Havent played CoD 4 or system shock 2 but from what ive seen and heard they are both good.

I think the person who made that list hasnt played a wide variety of games or is only judgeing there rank by hype.

Sry for the long post but that list has problems, Vegas, System shock 2, Half-life 2, Bioshock and CoD 4 deserve to be there but the others i can name at least 3 games better than them

Top 10 ever?  Wow, that's quite subjective.  While I agree with some, like Duke Nukem, Wolenstein, and maybe Halo (although I would have put Halo ahead of Halo 2 b/c it set the standard for FPS and paved the way for Halo 2), some others are real head-scratchers.  Rainbow Six Vegas???  HL2???  While I won't argue these are not enjoyable games, I certainly don't feel like they should be on the list for all-time.  Where's Quake or Unreal Tournament?!  Those franchises should be represented over certain ones you have on the list.

I do give you props for having Doom and Duke Nukem, as these paved the way for future FPS games.  I guess I just have to understand that it's simply an opinion, and nothing factual (such as units sold, # of gamers, longevity, etc)

We openly welcome criticism and constructive feedback, but how can you say a game doesnt belong on a list when a) its only an opinion piece, not factual info and b)you openly state you haven't played half of the games on the list. Each game on the list has a specific reason for being there. To compare Duke Nukem to the story of Bioshock makes no sense because Duke Nukem did not make the list based on story.

Also, as a general rule of thumb, we like to keep our lists to one entry per franchise, so that we wouldnt end up with 3 COD games, etc.

For those that disagree with the list though, what would you put there in place of what you disagree with?

Quake instead of Rainbow Six.
Ghost Recon or Unreal Tournament instead of Goldeneye.

Also, if Splintercell is considered an FPS, then it should be on the list ahead of all the games I mentioned above.
Tom Clancy did some nice books, movies, and games.

And after 2nd thought, HL2 should be on the list (due to all the mods that came about from it) but not at #1.
#1 should be Halo or Doom.

But I guess you were expecting criticism since you posted it here.  It's purely opinionated.  Everyone's opinion is going to be different.  But kudos to trying to put together a list.  It's tough to classify anything as all time.  A year from now, that list can completely change.

IMHO

Re: Top Ten FPS Games of All Time - Our list
Thanks for the response Schafer. To address your two points directly.
We felt Unreal and Quake, to be honest, served better as engines for other games, rather than games themselves. That might be a list for a different date though. Both were solid games, we just felt as a whole a notch below. As far as Ghost Recon, it did garner some thought, and ultimately we decided that Rainbow Six was more of a pure FPS game and better meshed with our line of thinking. Ghost Recon is much more tactical and thus the FPS version of it feels a little more disjointed than a RSV. Different preferences really.

We expected disagreement though, and do appreciate you taking the time to give feedback. No list will ever please anyone.

Obviously every top ten list of any type is subjective.  The idea was to have a little fun and generate some discussion.  Feel free to swing on by and check out the rest of the site.  We think it's purdy.

Halo 2 is a brilliant game. I don't know why so many people think it's a let down because it ends with a cliffhanger. It's got great gameplay and cliff hangers in games like this generally mean sequels which is good. Fable 2 was a huge letdown, nothing like Lionhead said it would be.

Where the hell were you before Halo 3 was launched? It is one of the most hyped up games ever. Halo CE isn't all that great in my opinion - not nearly as good as the others.

Good games but more recent fps games are doing what they did and so much more. I don't get though, how your having doubts about the controls from screen shots - they'll just stick normal fps controls on it, it'll work.

Or maybe it's just the opinions of those who made up the list. Each top 10 is just a collection of opinions.

Halo 2 was an alright game but it was a let down compaired to halo 1, I played multi-player to the best of its ability which some ppl might not have been able to enjoy due to no xbox live feature but i played system link 16 players and also Halo PC online and it is so much more fun and campain is better and weapons are more balanced.

But these are just my opinions and i think many ppl would agree with them but in some cases ppl like halo 2 better, Im not a fan of bungie any more playing TF2 opened my eyes.

What i meant was the screen shot dosent look like they are going to use modern FPS controls and are still keeping the auto aim hopefuly they were just some beta versions of there controls but from what i saw it looked like it was still the same control type as perfect dark 64 but we will see when it comes to the arcade.

System shock 2 and Bioshock are from the same franchise Irrational games was renamed in 2007

From wikipedia
2007 – Irrational Games is renamed to 2K Boston and 2K Australia.

I'll amend my statement from earlier and just cite specifics. You stated that you have not played COD4 or System Shock 2, you didnt finish Rainbow Six and only played the demo of Duke Nukem (I presume on XBLA). That's four out of ten you did not get the true experience from. Regardless, you're missing the point. It's not a list of just "these are the ten most fun games out there in the FPS genre" it's a these are the greatest, for a variety of reasons type of list.

Also, you may want to read up on the difference between a franchise and a development studio. System Shock 2 is not a sequel or a prequel to Bioshock, anymore than NBA 2k10 is a sequel. Being published by the same studio has nothing to do with the list, ie...Doom and Wolfenstein3D are on the list. The point is to keep multiple sequels off of the list, not developers.

I realize the difference between a franchise and a development studio, Bioshock is not a direct sequel but a spiritual sequel to System Shock, I guess they are both diferent franchises but i kinda feel like its a shock series with plans for future shock games on the way, But i dont mind them both on the list they are both very deserving of it.

Also thanks for posting that list i was meaning to check out system shock but then i forgot to do it and that list reminded me, now i downloaded it and its great its alot harder than bioshock, In bioshock ur flooded with ammo, money and adam and in system shock it looks like im gona be switching to the wrench often but it should get ezyer
when i get better stats.

Re: Top Ten FPS Games of All Time - Our list
Although I don't agree with this list completely orderwise, and a couple of the game listed it's a damn good list and I am so glad System Shock is there, now that was a good game. You'll notice the list begins at #11 and works it's way to #1 although other games may be listed in the description the black text is the one that is in that position. Here are my... alterations:

- Wolfenstein 3D [basically the first FPS ever, although it doesn't hold up now, it keeps a spot on the top 10 list by default no matter how far in the future]
- Golden Eye [greatest FPS games ever, I feel it falls far short, and wouldn't quite make the list but just from how much fun I've had playing it, it barely makes the cut. 4 players playing on a tiny TV was for more fun thab I could have ever imagined]
- Unreal Tournament [head-to-head multiplayer deathmatches being the primary focus of the game, although no real single player campaign to speak of who cares, but the Engine is what really shines especially in bot AI, (I'm kinda just sticking Quake in here next to it based on the similarities)]
- Doom 2 [before this was there ever a shooter game to have LAN or any form of co-op, maybe but that's why I warrant it's position here]
- Bioshock [amazing storytelling standpoint, couple with the plasmids and tonics made for a great game, "Would you kindly." knew something was coming but never the twists that it leads you on, I feel it deserves a place on the list if not a bit lower than I've placed it.]
- System Shock 2 [I love this game for much the same reason I love Bioshock, and at the time of it's release I had never played such a story driven FPS]
- Battlefield 1942 (series) [no matter which iteration Battlefield 1942, Battlefield 2, up tho the most recent Bad Company, and 1943 Battlefield was the first FPS to get vehicles right, a huge game of rock paper scissors, fanominally balanced]
- Duke Nukem 3D [no explanation is needed as to why this game made it onto the list "It's time to kick quantum singularity and chew bubblegum, except I'm all out of gum!" come on.]
- Halo CE [not the only classless multilayer game on this list but IMO the one to do it the best by learning from it's predecessors with it's balance in map design and weapon placement]
- Counter Strike Source (or1.6) [(played this game so much I almost got hemroids, no joke...) alongside it I would see several other Valve games TF2, Zombie Source Panic, and Portal (albeit maybe not a shooter shooter as you don't actually shoot shoot anyone but it is one of my single favorite games of all time bar none, the humor, strategy, and the main reason I keep coming back to The Orange Box)]
- COD 2 / 4 Modern Warfare [I put 2 and 4 just together on the list bump one or the other, as as far as I am concerned all of IW iterations of COD to date are amazing, not saying #1 isn't or Modern Warfare 2 won't be, just that those two particularly stand out, great online support, and leveling system (ie. perks, unlockable weapons) fanoninal shooter controls]

I really wanted to put Dark Forces, GRAW, and one of the Clancy games on the list but I feel they just barely fell short, this was supposed to be my top 10 list but it already expanded.

I've come back to this post a lot of times before hitting submit and don't completely feel comfortable with it yet, but that's my long ass 2 cents.

Yeah, I have to agree.  Comand and Conquer and Age of Empires are RTS's, GTA is really an Action Platformer, Fallout and Mass Effect are RPG's.  Not saying they're not all great games, but they certainly don't fit the list.

Any 'Top 10" list that doesn't include a Battlefield title is highly suspect, IMHO.

PS The best First Person Game ('cause it's not really a "shooter") I've ever played is Fallout 3.

It's not could of or should of.
It's could've or should've.
Learn the difference.
