hopefully he knows more than you... Formating the HDD will delete
everything, not just the passcode. All his saved data etc...

One might think I took offense to his "stupid parents" remark, and WANTED him to delete everything; but, I assure you, this was not the case! I'm really a nice guy and would NEVER want THAT to happen.
O.P.! As MeanMachine47 has stated, "Formating the HDD will delete
everything, not just the passcode.", you now have proof that "formatting" WILL get rid of the pass code. There may be a few small consequences, but getting rid of that pass code is the main goal. Right?
