For those of you that use a memory card, have any of you had any problems with your Xbox not recognizing your memory card after you installed the 10/28 update?

yea i just posted 1 and i brought my friends xbox over and after he updated same issue

I had the same problem as well.  I hope they are going to do something to fix it.  I had a lot of saved game data and also my kids Mii's.

are your memory cards xbox brand  my friend just got off the phone wit support and was told if its not xbox brand then it is no longer going to work

That is what happens when you all use the Memory Units from Datel. They won't fix that...only official Xbox 360 Memory Units work now.

Microsoft claims only cheaters use them, so they blocked unofficial ones for a security issue...but really it is just them showing their greed.

Its crap, I planned on getting one to store my stuff and be able to take all my saves and arcade games and add-ons with me wherever I go to play a 360.

You're right, they have no intention of reversing. But, Datel is working on an updated memory unit to bypass this.

I use it to transport my gammer tag info and map packs around the house (3 xboxes) and to my friends houses when i go there. This is CRAP!

I used to disagree with people who said microsoft were greedy but this seems to be going a step too far

it happend to me. i dont mind losing my memory. but i cant even get onto my xbox now. it just starts up with the error msg and never even gets to the dashboard. i have even tried a diff memory unit (cause the error msg is NO UNIT DETECTED) and it still wont work. and that memory unit was sponserd by xbox. and so is mine. this is really annoying. oh and i have tried reseting it by turning it off for 24 hours. didnt work. please help

I just transferred my data from the Datel Memory card to the Xbox memory card using an non updated Xbox. The Xbox brand memory card works perfectly with the 10/28 update, This is real crappy Microsoft would put a Monopoly on the Memory cards like that. Thats low.....

This is un professional and I think it should be ilegal for Mocrosoft to do this. It as if Canon or any other Digital camera manufacturer block any other brand of memory exept their own brand. I have completely lost all trust in Microsoft. I had no idea there was such a thing as unauthorized memory until today when all my game save data and game profiles have dissapeard and getting the news from techsupport. I have never used a memory card and decided to buy one to help me migrate my data from my old dead xbox 360 hard drive to the new Elite I just bought. I had purchased the transfer cable from MicroSoft support but when I read the instruction is said to use the memory card for game data and profiles since the tranfer kit was not garanteed to copy all data. I Because of it I went out and spent more mony on a memory unit. The only unit in stock that day at BestBuy was the MAX Memory unit so I bought it. Now after getting all my data off the old drive and all saved data I was able to get my Elite loaded up. Today when I got home to finish the process as I had only the memory card data to transfer I get prompted for the update. I took it and poof my memory no longer works. This is wrong in every way for Microsoft to treat it's customers like this. I also told the support rep that if I cannot get my 4 plus years of game data back I will be forced to make the switch and buy a PS3 and at the same time slowly move to an Apple Mac computer. I am a very unhappy customer and I hope MicroSoft sees all the angry customers and corrects the situation. All they had to do is announce this to their current live subscriber via the xbox or a simple email and I would have not taken the update and moved my data and would not have been so angry right now. Microsoft does not care at all for their customers and I will make sure I show my unsatisfaction in every possible way I can.

ok, MS making third paty memory cards unable to be used is a rumor guys. i called xbox support to try and fix my xbox and they said that the memory units should still work. they said the problem was something with the update. try and call support if you dont believe me. go to hardware (accesory's) support and ask them if this rumor is true or if its just a bug in the update if you get a diff, answer then me, please tell me.

It's no rumor. This is a link right to Major Nelson's blog, stating that Unauthorized Memory Units will be disabled.

I have to disagree with you because I have a case open with support on this very same issue. After trobleshooting for 10 min the support rep asked me to remove the memory card and see if the words Microsoft is stamped on it. When I said no the he proceded to tell me that only memory cards made by Microsoft are now supported. I was give the song and dance stating other memory cards could damage the console and is why Microsoft did this.

no it is nothing like this ... when you agreed to the terms and conditions (you know that thing you didn't read but said ok to anyway) it says that only authorized Microsoft products can be use and if so it is considered tampering ... you guys are lucky you didn't get a ban instead actually ... datel could have gotten ms approval and been fine but they didnt ... as for the work around it is just gonna be done again and the next time you might not get lucky enough to just not be able to use the mem cards

They will unless you get the new update, then their useless.

MS has every right to kill the use of Unauthorized accessories, etc. Sony updates constantly as well & so does Nintendo, this is nothing new. Datel has to tread careful or MS might just sue them into oblivion, especially if they start reverse engineering software designed to stop them in the first place. Not directed at you Glirmin.

I have the exact same problem.

i have an xbox arcade with the memory card that came in the box with it. Since the update I get the message "unable to detect a memory card cannot complete the update"
the sytem was working just fine before the update ...

at any rate the only ways to get it fixed are to find someone with a memory card who did the update and it worked. what I found out is that your, and my and probobly 10k other people had an official memory card that was low on memory, as a result it did not fully complete the download, and now because it did not the system cannot run the update ... catch 22 there.

anyway we can spend 99 bucks to get it fixed ... which is pretty awesome I must say, that the updates have no way to back out when something like this happens.

or ... get a new darn xbox at walmart this weekend when they do the buy an xbox get a 100 dollar gift card sale for pre-black friday.

annoying that I have to buy a new xbox because of a rediculous update ... but it is what it is I guess, since it wont even start and I can get a new one for as much as they want to fix the one they bricked with their update.

um cant you just purchase a new mem card? ... it seems that that would work better

And therein lies the rub.

No, because in order to boot the memory card has to have the update on it, as the bios is already wiped waiting for the update pointed at the memory card.

I purchased a new official memory card ... got the same error. Xbox support said I needed a hard drive then ... so I went out and got it ... same error.

then they told me that what happend was the bios gets wiped and then on restart it looks to the memory card for the new bios file (it wipes the bios at power down). so without the file where it is looking for it (on the memory card) the only option is to send it in and have them do it.

like I said for 99 bucks ... but forget that junk I picked up a new xbox at walmart on sunday for 100 bucks after the gift card ...

the up side is I got a new xbox ...

i ran the update on the new one with the new card in, took the card put it in the old one ... what do you know it read it and started right up.

anyway suffice it to say for all of us who got bit by this it kind of sucked

Worst part is, Microsoft currently has a lawsuit in the state of Mississippi for holding the computer market. This won't go over well, because it's an obvious ploy to stop Datel from selling their memory units.

no ... it is to stop ANYONE  from selling unauthorized anything for the 360 ... guys i know it sucks to have to pay high dollar for things that should in all actuality be cheaper ... but it saves money in the long run to follow the rules ... its like speeding in your car ... you get by with it for a long time ... but if you do it eventually you will have to pay a ticket
