1. Project Zero (Fatal Frame depending on where you live)
2. Dead Space
3. Dino Crisis
4. Left 4 Dead
5. Doom 3

The first 2 maybe 3(can remember the 3rd very well) RE games had that element of horror to them; I played them on ps2 though.  And while i haven't played many games on 360,  Dead space is the scariest game ever, a  perfect horror game.

I thought Dead Space was scarier than Left 4 Dead. Especially the very last cutscene in the game just after Isacc defeats the hive mind, and escapes the planet. I was in a pitch black room by myself, with my home theater system at full volume (1,000W), and then it happened.  Couldn't think strait the rest of the night!

Condemned 1

Doom 3 (PC)

Aliens vs. Predator 2 (PC)

Eternal Darkness

Silent Hill 2

I don't know how Eternal Darkness didn't get a mention, but that games screws with your head, literally.  If you haven't played it and you love horror games you're really missing out.  It's hard to find and a little dated, but like I said, the game literally screws with your head, much like the last Scarecrow level in Arkham Asylum.

And AvP 2 for PC, especially the marine levels are some of the most intense you'll even play.  Especially because the motion tracker is constanly going and always in the back of your mind.

Dead Space is good, but there are a lot of things that keep it from being an amazing horror game.  The stasis ability is one of theme.  It's a crutch.  Plus, it's too easy to kill everything.  That's what's ruining Resident Evil.  The older games didn't give you enough ammo, and 4 and 5 have been more action oriented which takes away from the scare factor.

I agree with you on resident evil. I remember playing one on game cube and wasted all my ammo in the first level, I had to start over! The good old days of resident evil.

LMAO, number 9? Seriously? And why CoD: WaW is anywhere near top 10 baffles me.

No offence, but I don't think you understand what "horror" is. Most of what you put down is nothing more than gore/zombie survival. True horror is what Dead Space has done. Being alone, afriad, surrounded by deadly aliens with no way out. Very mind ***.

I did not even bother with the rest of your list when I saw CoD: WaW at second place.

It's not even startling IMO.

Manhunt?? gruesome maybe but not scary at all. Ghosts and Goblins, CoD WaW?  Forbidden forest- you get some points for pulling that out. lol what did you play that on a Commidore 64? (loved that thing).

I have to say the early Resident Evil's, Fatal Frame, silent hill and Dead Space all hold a certian place in the pantheon of games that put the fear of what will happen next or what I like to call the Oh !@#$ factor.

Have you played Dead Space on Impossible? If you have and still have the opinion that there is too much ammo, my hat is off to you sir. . .

On Impossible, whenever I hear a sound, my heart won't stop beating because I know something's about to pop out of a vent.

One of the very few games that could do that to me.

Impossible is definately a strong challenge to me. I would not be able to complete the Impossible mode without the statis cheat. I know my limits and its fun for me, regardless of how the purists may feel.

Ammo is quite limited, but I have been able to conserve by using melee when possible...stomping lurkers and leapers when they are on the ground. Taking careful aim to shoot the arms with two shots. Learned to avoid shooting the legs and focus on arms. Making greater use of fuel canisters when they are around. Even discovered fuel canisters can be used to destroy fuses in the greenhouse air filtration scrubbers...I guess thats why they have been laying around there all this time...silly me!

I'm on the greenhouse level now, and having trouble with the Leviathan. It does a whole lot more damage with a tentacle hit in impossible and I havent worked out the tatics to beating it. I've gone in there with 1 large and 4 med pacs and rest ammo on a level 3 suit. I keep using up all my med paks before I have even cleared the 1st round of tentacles. Just cant seem to run away fast enough when the tentacles come out. I maxed out my hit points and all my equipment with node upgrades and even that doesnt seem to help....one hit and Im down to yellow on my health. Its time for a break from the game for a bit, then come back with fresh approach.

Ive played thru this game 3+ times already and Im still startled, especially on impossible where the game will make more liberal use of vents, and the monsters will actually try to out-flank you and use the vents to get behind you. Several times already there have been WTF moments...they never did THAT before....great fun!

Which Necromorph would you find the most challenging to kill?

Because I have found different ways for myself to kill them all easier.

Re: Is Dead Space the ultimate horror video game?
I beat this game on impossible with no problems.  Nothing changes except enemy damage and hp.  So, you should already know what's where and when it's coming at you.  I beat hard on my first playthrough with just the plasma cutter.  If you're worried about ammo then just use a couple weapons that you like.  I'm a big fan of the plasma cutter, pusle rifle (mainly for the final boss, and the really tiny enemies), and the ripper.  That will give you plenty of nodes and you can sell all the ammo you find for other weapons if you're low on ammo.  If you think this game is hard by any means then don't play ninja gaiden 2.
and by no means am I saying this is a bad game.  I think it's a really good game, but my original list is just 5 games in no specific order that I think are much scarrier.

Bosses aside, assembled dividers are the most challenging for me. Havent encountered them yet on impossible and will try new approach with line gun mines. Just takes a lot of ammo to bring all their parts down. Even several direct hits to a head, when assembled, does not always kill the head part, so I'm guessing there is a built in bias to keep some parts of the divider alive to drain ammo from the player.

I agree, there are techniques that work better, depending upon the variety of necromorph.

Use stasis on the dividers and flee.

Use stasis and use the line gun until his body separates then switch to your Force Gun so you can kill the little buggers.

No, I did not use cheats and I never do.  Like I said, pick a few weapons you like and concentrate on them.  Sell anything you don't need for other weapons.
If you're having trouble with the boss in the garden level then you're missing the easiest part.  When the tentacles swing to the side and prepare to strike you, jump out of it's way.  Remember, you're in zero gravity, so all you have to do is jump to the opposite side of the 'tube' and the tentacles don't make a full swing around.
