2 Consoles

Hiya,

I have 2 XBOX 360 Consoles, and they are connected to a Netgear DG834GT Router.

My console works flawlessly all the time, but when I want to play on XBOX Live with the other console, it wont allow play all the time (sometimes it does).

I have checked the connection on main console and all is fine, however on the second console I get a strict NAT error. I am not very good with networking and such, so was wondering, how can I have open NAT on both consoles? what do I need to do? a step by step for idiots would be amazing lol.

Go to Shad0wmanUK's web site and look for his instructions on NAT settings.

He has specific information about the DG834 router and his stuff may help you.

http://www.unofficialguidetolive.co.uk/

In general,  if multiple consoles will work at all, you need to have UPnP enabled on  the router AND not have any port forwarding or DMZ stuff set up.     But the router has to support mulitple xboxes.

Re: 2 Consoles
Some brands of routers don't allow 2 or more xboxes to be connected at the same time with open NATs
Netgear routers are one brand that don't allow this.

You may end up having to buy a new router of a different brand if you want both consoles to have open nats.
I don't know what brands of router are best for this though but i'm sure if you search google you can find a list of routers that will work.

Do both have open NAT when they are both switched on at the same time?

If so which version of the router are you using?
And what firmware version you using?
I've have had both version 3 and version 4 of the router and could never get it working with more than one xbox.
I sold them a year ago so maybe there have been a new version released recently or a firmware update that fixes it.

Anyway I did find a list not long ago of compatible routers that allow more than one xbox and netgears were listed as not compatible. It's possible that a firmware update could have fixed the compatibilty though. I'll try to find this list in my browser history anyway.

Re: 2 Consoles

Well it works some games but when both on second one is always closed NAT (strict) if there is a way to work with DG834GT I would be happy but read Netgear are no good for this.

I couldn't find the list I had before but a quick search has found this list of compatible routers.
The list also says if the router allows more than one xbox to connect at the same time with open NATS.

http://www.unofficialguidetolive.co.uk/equipment/adslrecommendations.htm

Anyway according to this list Netgears don't allow more than one xbox to be connected at the same time with open nats.

Re: 2 Consoles
Call the router manufacturer and get the MTU raised as high as possible on the router. That should resolve issue.

Look in the FAQ section on that site for the FAQ entitled "Two Xboxes one router internet connection"

That FAQ explains the issues with connecting two Xboxes to the same router, the DG834GT will not support two Xboxes with an Open NAT I'm afraid

True but the NAT won't be Open on both.

Open/Strict or Open/Moderate, not Open/Open,

I have a D-Link DGL-4300 gaming router and have had 4 360s connected all with open NAT.  I have 2 connected fine on a daily base, plus a PS3, a Wii and 2 computers.  Have 3 or 4 X-Box's when friends come over. It might cost more but it worked right out of the box.

Sorry didn't realize the router he was using had the modem built in.  I work for a IT company in PA and have recomended the DGL-4300 to a lot of customers and they have been happy with it.  It has been a problem sometimes because end users wanted one box instead of 2.  I saw in another post you recommended the DSL-2640, I will have to look into it.  Thanks.

I must admit going back a few years ago I wasn't a fan of Dlink but since the DGL-4300/4500 range and their other later routers I've found them very good.

Yeah the DSL-2640 and 2740 are great combined modem/routers, you won't find them Vista/Xbox Live tested as Microsoft just won't test/certify modem/routers for some reason (from a Dlink source). But the DSL2640B certainly works with 2 or more Xboxes with an Open NAT as I've tested it myself (I use that router now) and I've been recommending it for a few years now and never heard a bad word back.

Its got QoS functionality and tons of added extras to tweak like guest WLAN's etc.... for the price you get a lot, I'd certainly have a look at it

Yeah I use to hate D-Link products.  But after fighting with my linksys and then a netgear router, to get 2 360s connected I took a shot on the DGL-4300 after reading a lot of reviews.  I realy dreaded ordering a D-link, but I have no complaints with it, except the blue activity lights are way to bright.

Re: 2 Consoles
First off, I have a Belkin wireless g router, F5D7230-4. I'm using the latest firmware, and I also have a Motorola SB5120 modem given to me by Comcast.
I've searched all over the internet for an answer on how to get our (my roommate's and mine) Xbox's to work at the same time, perfectly. Just as a test, I forwarded the correct ports to my Xbox and tried to play Gears 2. For the first time, ever, I had gotten host. The following rounds when not host, I still had a GREAT connection. Same applied to COD4. Convinced that everything else I had read was correct, I then set my roommate's Xbox in the DMZ. So...
Static ip's, correct ports forwarded for xbox1, correct ip in dmz for xbox2. Xbox1, no problems. Xbox2 MTU settings error. Is this because you can't do port forwarding/dmz when having two xbox's, or because of a legit MTU settings error? Also, within my router settings, there is no spot for adjusting the MTU settings.
Basically, I want to harness the amazing connection I seemed to have when I tested it earlier with one xbox; and I want to implement it on two xbox's. Is this possible? I fear it isn't. So for the time being I disabled PF and DMZ and enabled UPnP as assumed that will have to do until I get a new router. What router(s) will work better than mine at providing a decent connection for two xbox's? Any router listed as XBOX compatable?

Sorry for the length, redundancy, numerous questions. Thanks for any help, and for Shadowman's website.

Re: 2 Consoles
Its a shame as the F5D7231uk4 does work with two Xboxes, very very similar to yours but different enough to make all the difference.

For your cable connection go for any device that has the Vista logo look here (open with IE) that said I'd still stay away from Belkin N routers as I get a lot of bad feedback on them with regards to live (MTU & NAT issues)

Here's a scrape from my site also of the ones known to work, some are/are not listed on the Microsoft site:-

  • Belkin F5D7231uk4 (version 2) (firmware F5D7231-4_UK_5.01.03) - Ensure you enable UPnP
  • Dlink DIR-655 Extreme N Gigabit router (tested with firmware 1.03, higher versions of firmware may also work)
  • Dlink DIR-300/301 Wireless G Router(Also known as DKT-110 when bundled with wireless PC adapter
  • Dlink DIR-825 (firmware 2.01EU, higher versions may also work)

Re: 2 Consoles
Thanks a lot man, I think I'm going to go with one of the d-links from the vista list. Kind of leaning towards a 4300 or a 4500. Or would a cheaper router work just as well?

Also, when you say "work with two xbox's" do you mean I can do port forwarding on xbox1 and dmz on xbox2? Or is that theory impossible?

Thanks again.

Either of those will work great, or the DIR-655/DIR-855

You don't need to do any forwarding on any of those routers, Open NAT's out of the box Smile [:)]

I have two xbox 360s hooked  up to a linksys befsr41 ver 4.3 . One has a open nat and the other a strict nat.
I talked with linksys on line and they had me set up a static IP address for both using different ports with Upnp enabled and still get a strict nat when i run xbox live test on xbox 2.    Both xboxs will connect to xbox live   Not a big problem except cant host on one xbox 2   Would love some help with this one, I have two for when my grand kids come over

That modem should work ok, with your linksys.  Do you have any special settings in your Linksys?  (like port forwarding, or DMZ settings).

This procedure usually fixes most problems with Linksys routers and xbox live.

1. Upgrade the firmware in your router to the most recent firmware available, for your specific model, from Linksys  (www.Linksys.com/support)

2. Save a copy of your router's configuration settings to a file on your PC.

3. Perform a "Factory Reset" on the router. (Hold the reset button down for a count of 5 or more.... you will need to re-setup your wireless after doing this, but don't change anything else)

4. Verify that UPnP is enabled on the router. (It is located in the "Administration" section and is usually enabled by default)

5. On your xbox, run the "Restore to Factory Defaults" function in the network settings area of the System Blade.

Do a complete power re-cycle of your network.

Power off your modem, your router (if you have one), your PCs, laptops, xboxes.  Power off everything on your network.

Let the whole system set unpowered for 30 minutes or more.

Then power them back on in this order.

1. Power on the modem (Wait a few minutes for the lights on the modem to settle down)

2. power on the router (Wait a few minutes here too)

3.  Power on your PC (Check to see that you have internet connectivity)

4. Power on your xbox  (Hopefully all works well at this point)

5. After your xbox is working properly and with your xbox still powered on, turn on the other devices on your network.

You should be good to go.

Re: 2 Consoles
done those things twice . this all started after i replaced my older befsr41 v1.4 linksys router . because of getting disconnected from live every 30 min after a update and because xbox live doesnt support that router.
i replace it with a linksys befsr41 v4.3 router. thats when i started getting strict nat. chated with other blogs on nat problems and with linksys support and so far can only get open nat on xbox 1 . i see my rounter is not on the list for connectig 2 xboxs from shadowlands web site . Right now i have port forwarding  on xbox 1 at 88 and 3074 and xbox 2  at 89 and 3075
per linksys support plus Upnp enabled . When i disable port forwarding i get strict nat on both xboxs.  both xboxs can talk with each other on live or other partys and both can hook up with the same host. its just xbox 2 cant host. For now Im going to leave things like they are till i replace my computer with windows 7 and then get a router that will support two or more xboxs

Re: 2 Consoles
If you plug a Laptop or Xbox directly into the RCA modem with the Laptop or Xbox set to automatically get its network information,  what IP address does it end up with?

is it something like   192.168.100.xxx

If so, then the RCA could be causing issues as it must perform NAT functions to translate traffic from a Public to a Private address.

you may need to put the RCA device in "bridge" mode if this is the case.
