Turn based strategy is dead.
Indeed, it is. Civilization Revolution was the best TBS on consoles ever and it sold in pathetic numbers. People simply don't like it, especially on consoles.
That being said, I love them and might check this out.
Explain the first one in more detail, plz?
I agree that real-time is more exciting than turn-based. Still, some gamers will appreciate what they didn't like in Endwar, like the battalion upgraded and the off map support than sometime advantage one side. Also, MM's battle is not based on the R-P-S system like Endwar. Units are based on numbers and battles are based on mathematics and probabilities.
See, every units is made up to 8 (vs 4 like in Endwar). Let's say you have a Bison tank with an attack rating of 60 and a defense rating of 40. Attack power would be 60 x 8 = 480 and a defense of 40 x 8 = 320. If that tank was to attack a Grizzly tank with a rating of 560 (70 each) offense and 480 (60 each) defense, it should lose more units. The weaker units might be left with 5 tanks vs 7 of the stronger tank. The later one would now have 7 x 70 = 490 for offense and 7 x 60 = 420. Again, it's based on probabilities and the highest rating is 999. Note that the terrain also effects a unit's defense. If you're in a rough terrain that shows 30%, then your defense's rating goes up by 30%.
Anyway, if you were to attack the Grizzly with another unit that have let's say 600 for attack, the unit you're attacking with would have the support of what is left of the Bison tank, it that case 300 (5 x 60) + the new unit's power rating so you would be up to 900 for attack. The map are based on Hexagons. If you can surround an ennemy by placing 2 of your units on opposite ends of the hexagon, the surrounded units loses half of it's attack and defense rating. Each time a unit fights, it gains experience that makes it's rating higher and this only add depth to the game.
Most maps has factories that can be taken only by infantry. Most of the times these factories have units in them so whatever sides wins it, it also takes the units inside that factory. But here's a catch: Those factory can also be taken back by the other side (like uplinks in endwar). Here's where it becomes more interesting. Anytime you get a damaged units into the factory, on your next turn, it will be up to it's full 8 of that unit. Sometimes you will have some decision to make because you will have the choice of putting that unit into the factory for repairs, or use that units to finish off an enemy unit but at the risk of losing it along with the experience it has acquired.
The goal is to either eleminate all hostile units or get one infantry into your opponents's main base.
