Does the DLC for Mass Effect start before or after the main story line?  In other words, do I need to have a save before finishing Ilos or does it pick up after the main story? (I don't want to do too much research for fear of stumbling over a spoiler.)

I started this game recently and I've been milking all the fun out of it before finishing the main story line.  I would like to use the DLC to milk it a little more before finishing.

You need to save before. After you completed the game, it's over. You can't continue to play it after the main storyline is finished. So play the DLC before.
