Any alternative to Gamefly???
Ok I have been a subscriber to Gamefly for several years. It seems like their shipping is just getting worse and worse as time goes on. It is not a service that I would consider being worth $15.95 a month minimum. Does anybody know if there are any competitors out there that can compete with Gamefly? Sadly I have not been able to find any. I thought Blockbuster's game rental service would be up by now, but there hasn't been a word breathed about it since around May.

Re: Any alternative to Gamefly???

I too am very disappointed in Gamefly the last two months.  I have been looking around and I've found these.

Well you have Gamemine.com and if I'm not mistaken they are 14 dollars a month and after 90 days they supposedly give you some super fast shipping.  I can't vouch for it though but it is what's advertised.

Then you have Gamerang.com and that is 17 dollars a month. They have a sign up special of 2 months for 30 dollars though.

The cheapest one I could find is Gottaplay.com and they are at 12 dollars.  I haven't heard anything good about them though.  I heard they have a bad selection.

I have heard nothing but bad things about Gottaplay. I left Gamerang for Gamefly. On the other hand Gamemine sounds very good to me. I am nervous to pull the trigger though because the reviews on this one are very mixed. Some absolutely love it and some think it is the worst company they have ever dealt with. Is there anybody out there that have tried Gamemine that can vouch whether their service is good/bad?

Re: Any alternative to Gamefly???
I am afraid there is no good alternative except physical Blockbuster store, which is pricy.
I would recommend developing a buy then sell system. You buy a new game for $60 if it is well reviewed, play it then sell it. The value should have reduced by not too much (sell on half.com or ebay.com  to get a best free market offer)
If a game is kind of average then wait 2 or 3 weeks and then go buy it on half.com or ebay, for a lower market price.
When you're selling you will lose very little off the value of the game.

Re: Any alternative to Gamefly???

Yea, I'm surprised with the demand for rental games there aren't a lot more companies trying to do it.  But I am completely sold on Gamefly.  I've done the rental thing for a while now and have tried several companies but found that Gamefly really does do it the best.  Shipping times can vary a bit but a 3-4 day turnaround is the norm for me.  Their selection is huge and price is good too.  With the two game plan I keep one while I'm sending the other one back so I don't have to worry about trying to bang out a longer playing game.  I've saved tons of cash by not dropping 60 bucks on every game I've played.

I've also tried blockbuster a couple of times but I always stopped cause their selection just never cut it and was more expensive.  I also heard that they're closing something like 1000+ stores so who knows how long they're going to be around.

I looked at some sites that are "supposed" to offer reviews but they kind of look like something Gamefly would put together.....  OR they have Gottaplay rated highly so I wouldn't trust them.  If I had to switch or didn't have Gamefly rewards I want to keep I would probably do Gamemine.

What exactly is your problem with Gamefly?

I have had no complaints with it so far and I have had it since February. In fact, it is the reason I didn't go insane from boredom in the summer.

Their game availability is getting too poor. Operation Flashpoint released on the 6th and I missed getting my game back by 1 day. I have had this game in my que for months though. This game shipped yesterday. That is unacceptable. I don't think I am going to like this game, but I would like to have been able to try it to find out instead of having to wait a month. Now I am going to haft to put it back in the mailbox as soon as I receive it and pray that it gets there before COD releases because it will probably take forever to get that one too if I don't. I actually upgraded my plan the day after it released to a 2 at a time plan and it still took that long. I have not been able to get 2 games out since I upgraded.

Some may find this acceptable, but for me I expect better for $21 a month. I could have rented them in the store cheaper then that.

I feel your pain but that totally has not been my experience with Gamefly. Yes I have to be proactive with my GameQ but to make sure I get the games I want, I'm willing to take a few minutes and update my GameQ (keep it small with only games you really want) and make sure I have an open slot before a release day of the game I want. If you are not receiving games for a month then you need to contact G-fly because that is not normal and there is no way they could stay in business if it was. With the two game plan I usually play about 3-4 games a month. That's an average of about $6 per game for a month. That's pretty cheap.

I actually did contact support. I just got the typical canned response "keep lots of games in your Q."

Re: Any alternative to Gamefly???
I have been pretty happy with them, but they are getting slow. If you don't have a spot open and a new game in your Q about a week before it comes out your not going to get it for a couple weeks. If you know this then you get the new games and if you like it then it makes buying cheaper overall.

The percentage of if your going to get a game isn't right at all and they could care less if they don't ship you a game even if it's the only one you have had it in your list for a month. More than once before making sure a spot is open I would have a new release at #1 with a spot open and the day it releases they send me #2 or #3 even if they are at very low levels and I have waited for those titles quite awhile. Didn't seem right, but if I really want a game I pay retail.

Still better than any local rental I have put up with for the longest time. Especially the fact older tittles are easy to get and you can buy them at less than retail if you like them. To many times I would never get through a rented game because I just didn't have time to get into it and would need to return it.

If you're having trouble staying on top of your GameQ I use the mobile version of the site on my phone. Also read that gamefly just released an app for iphone called Gamecenter.

Re: Any alternative to Gamefly???
I was most disappointed by their customer service the other day.  It was 5 days before they acknowledged receiving a game I shipped back, and I was like well that could have been the mail service, who knows.  Then two more days went by and they didn't ship me anything even though I have 43 games in my que across a few systems.

I contacted them, and previously they would have apologized for that immediately shipped one out.  It happened once before and they handled it well.  Well, all they did this time was send me an automated response saying just because the availibility of a game is medium to high doesn't mean it is at your shipping center.  A couple days later they shipped a game that was not high on my queue, and was lower availibility than most higher.  Confusing....

Anyways, I downgraded at the end of last month.  I don't want to lose my percent off buys and free shipping.  That is one thing they do well, pricing used games.

Gamefly's customer service has always treated me well but luckily I have only had to use it a couple of times. When I used to keep a lot of games in my GameQ I have to admit that sometimes a game would be sent that didn't quite fit into my availability setup. But I figure they've gotten it right just about every time so I'll forgive if every once in a while it's not right on the mark. Keeping my Q smaller helps to keep that from happening. But you are correct about the extras....I'm up to 10% off all my purchases and of course the $5 Gamefly dollars every three months always helps. The Keep It price for games is always cheap and the money I save renting instead of paying $60 for new games is crazy.

Gamefly made me extremely mad as the months went on. They started off sending me everything fast as heck and games I wanted then as time went on they just kept getting slower and more annoying.

I had 8 games in my Q. The first 5 were listed as "high" availability and they shipped me a game that was number 6 in my Q and "medium" availability... how rubbish.

Also, the fact that they would receive my game and not ship me anything for 2 days while my Q had 10 games in it was totally unacceptable.

Ok well I did a little checking into Gamemine and read actually quite a few complaints about them. One of them was that customer service either takes forever to respond or doesn't respond at all. I decided that I would give this a try for myself and see.(This was shortly after it was suggested above, so it has been quite a while) Anyway I still have not gotten a response from them, so I don't think I will be jumping ship to them any time soon. Come on Blockbuster hurry up and launch your online game rental service!!!

Just checked my G-fly rental history and most of my games shipped same day or even a day or two before (my post office does that scanning thing, when they remember). The only time I've waited more than a day is when I've sent a game back a few days early to make sure I get a new release. Can't understand why your service changed for you but my service definitely hasn't slowed down. It's remained pretty much the same since I joined. I've been very satisfied.

I haven't had any problems with Gamefly. You just need to know how to work the Game Q.

Since games are "first come first serve" you need to make sure that you have a game in your Q at least a week before it is released, especially if you know it is going to be on high demand. I always make sure I have returned my games well before the release of the next games I want. With this system, I have gotten every new release that I have wanted in the past few months.

exactly!!

its a system and you have to learn to work it. think of all the gamers that use GF and how many want said game...you missed release by 1 day so someone else took your spot. it sucks but thats life. this is exactly why i have the 3 game deal myself. i never have to worry about not getting the new releases i have on my list and ive NEVER had a problem with service or mailings in the 1 1/2 years ive been a member.
