I am happy. I have had a PS3 since launch but I rarely turn it on, it just sits there useless. Now I can move it to another room and use it to watch Netflix there as well.

But since the PSN is free and you need Xbox Live Gold to watch Netflix on the 360 this might give the PS3 a big boost.

My gold membership expires in a couple months and I won't renew now.  I play mostly single player games and only originally signed up for gold to get the Netflix stream.  Now that I can get it on my PS3 for free, that will save me 40 bucks a year (I pay 10 less because I buy through Amazon).  I wonder how many Gold members will let their memberships go back to silver now?  I doubt a million but I'm sure tens of thousands if not a couple hundred thousand.

Microsoft needs to get back in the game.  I love my 360, but while PS3 has been playing catch up MS has been standing 5ft short of the finish line enjoying the Gatorade.  Time to push it!

Re: netflix on ps3
For me, it's going to boil down to performance.

I have a number of devices and means of accessing my Netflix queue from my living room, but until now my Xbox 360 has given me the best overall quality.

If PS3's Netflix app provides better quality than the 360 app, I will use my PS3 to view my Netflix queue.  My PS3 already handles most of my multimedia needs, since it has more diverse codec support.

The Xbox 360 is first and foremost a gaming console, and will continue to serve as such for me.  I own all current consoles and portables, and probably do 95% of my gaming on my Xbox 360.

Well what does this mean?  If Sony has made an agreement with Netflix,  does this include some sort of money?  I'm sure there is, so-

Will PSN cost money?
Will LIVE raise or lower their service?

A lot of questions are in my head now that this is confirmed.

Netflix is just part of the tottal xbox live package.  The online enviorment on XB360 compared to PS3 is xbox 360 winner due to the total gameplaying experence. Netflix on xbox live is great and well microsoft is not deft dumb and blind. They do react on their own time line not ours, even though we wish so very much they did.

This news sort of makes or breaks my defense of Xbox 360.  Now that the competition has the very thing they Microsoft has been touting as one of the big exclusivity of signing up to Xbox Live Gold.

Netflix now needs to be offered for XBL Silver members.

Re: netflix on ps3
If Netflix is using the standard BD-streaming menu system (and I think they are) than this is a huge let down to Ps3 users... you are essentially getting a crappy menu system (think SLOOWWW)

http://www.betanews.com/article/PS3-Netflix-The-best-use-of-BDLive-yet/1256581201

Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter believes this technique was chosen to work around some exclusivity clauses between Netflix and Microsoft, but the real reason is unknown  ( yah right)

Microsoft and Netflix have an agreement (basically Microsoft paid Netflix for exclusiveness SOFTWARE on the CONSOLE HARDWARE)..... when you use the service you are connecting to netflix servers... but using Xbox 360's fast menu system.

I have both a Samsung BD Netflix streaming player and an Xbox 360 that has Netflix...

Both are awESOME BUT the Xbox version is simply better because of the speed I can stroll thru my 160+ movies/Tv shows in my Que... I can scroll with the bumper buttons in super speed in seconds....and the choices of re-watching my recently seen media... see whats out now... choices...

my BD-player takes forever to scroll thru my 160 programs... (5 minutes).. and I have no other choices (menu choices)

The menu system just plain sucks on the players... and this is the same menu the Sony Ps3 people will get(supposely)...

If I want to watch something on the big TV with the BD player I make sure whatever I'm watching is on the top of my Que... so I don't have to go thru waves and waves of stuff to get to it.. (there is currently no folders or sub folders for your Que)

I think its cool Netflix is giving Microsoft the big middle finger but the Ps3 owners are still getting a 2nd hand version of what we (xbox 360) users have...

I highly doubt mass Xbox netflix users will drop Xbox just for the Netflix on Ps3...

FYI... this FREE DISC from Netflix has software to make ANY internet capable BD-player of being Netflix streaming capable... thus the work-around the Microsoft contract...

This and the presumed rumor that PS3 will be limited to Standard Definition video streams has quickly killed my excitement.

As I mentioned earlier, the overall quality is what will determine where and how I view my Netflix movies.  My Xbox 360 delivers a higher quality of picture than my PC (using the same internet connection).

If the PS3 is limited to Standard Definition, and requires the cumbersome app disc, I'll stick with the Xbox 360's integrated Netflix app.

What started as a pretty hopeful day has now disolved into meh-land.

If the ps3 can integrate netflix as well as the 360 then I can cancel my wife's gold since she only uses her xbox for movies.  My ps3 will finally get some use.  Also my parents and brother in law were on the fence about what system to buy.  Neither were really interested in games besides rock band, they just want to access their media and netflix was a big draw for the 360.  I hope Microsoft realizes they lost at least 2 customers plus 1 gold member.  $100 wireless adapter and $50 gold membership vs. free is not even a contest.  Personally I don't mind paying for gold, but that's just me.

Where did you hear/read this rumor about only standard def streaming?

In yesterday's news release, IGN's first sentence states that HD streaming will be available.

Starting next month, U.S. PlayStation 3 owners will finally be able to stream high-definition movies and television episodes through Netflix's rental service via PlayStation Network at no additional cost.

I want people to know that this disc is for PS3 players only... not any BD-player.. I was incorrect...

This is a SPECIAL PS3 ONLY Netflix DISC....

I was assuming because of previous Microsoft agreements that this was just a whatever BD-Disc.. but now I'm hearing this is a PS3 only Disc..

... so maybe they(Netflix) will incorporate the PS3 menu system... which could mean the menu selection won't be as slow as previous assumed..

The Netflix streamed will be SOME HD content... just like you can do on the computer or Xbox or any BD-Netlfix capable player..

For example... Star Trek (orginal series) is available for HD streaming... but not Machine Girl (crazy Japanese Horror movie)

Guess we will have to wait and see

This was a discussion I read on the AVS forums that eventually made its way to the PS3 forums.  AVS is debating that the proprietary software developed for the Xbox 360 gives a "real" HD stream, while PC (and likely PS3) will not.

Of course, it's all speculation until we get our hands on the PS3 Netflix disc so people smarter than I can run their "tests".  I've already preordered my disc, so we'll see.

Re: netflix on ps3
I work for Netflix, and I can only say so much. But I will tell you this. The PS3 version is going to be no different than Roku or 360 delivery methods. If anything, its worse as we're supplying a dedicated disk people have to use instead of a native app integrated into the system ala the 360. It doesnt come out for a while, and to be honest. The experience is still in infant stages via the disc. However, I will say this. We here at Netflix have ALOT , I MEAN ALOT. more in store for our 360 service, that will make what we do for the PS3 look second rate. At Netflix, we're all more 360 friendly. And there's still lots to come in terms of features for the 360 version, trust me. No specifics now but trust me. And actually, we're more concerned over our mobile apps we're developing, such as an iphone app. Consider the PS3 disc, a bone thrown to the 360. The PS3 version wont have nearly the same future features the 360 does..... Just trust me. I''ve been working out of Beverly Hills netflix corporate office for about 2 years now. We're always trying to bring more to our users.... Now back to gaming, which is why I am here. The PS3 I have one, and I like it. Its becoming a far better movie player than gaming system, but hopefully that will change. Competition brings only benefits to us end users...

For me personally, I'd give up some features to save my XBL Gold membership fee.  As long as it streams and looks the same as the PS3 then I'm happy to go with even just the original Netflix screens that showed up on the Xbox.  I did sign up for Gold just to get access to those screens after all.

Expected of Netflix once they announced there expansion plans (streaming available outside of the US). Like any company they love money, the best way to get said money would be to get more customers. Its going to the Wii as well although with or without the potential HD option due to hardware limitations.

Its not rocket surgery.

Haha, you;d be surprised how little money we make though, yes we do see profits obviously but the +/- isnt that great. We actually pay a hell of a lot to get mass quantities of DVD's and the streaming doesnt come cheap either. So we're not that high in the positive. As one would think....

i dont use netflix on the box yet but was gonna get it, i prefer my PS3 more but i will still use netfix on the 360 over the PS3 simply because downloading things on Live is A LOT faster than on the PSN.  I can't see netflix streaming through the PSN as good as it can through Live.

Since the Netflix app on PS3 is not going to be integrated (seperate disc), I would guess that PSN is not actually going to serve the stream.

You may not even have to be signed into your PSN account to use the Netflix disc, but that's just early speculation.  We'll know for sure later.

Nope, you just have to look hard, and I am not trying to be rude. I can count, I think we had 25 Sony Movies up in the last 4 months, which is a bulk of their movies from the last 1 1/2 - 2 years....Hancock, Superbad, Pinneapple, Zohan, Lakeview Terrace, and thats just off the top of my head. You just need to look hard, its been many more than just 1 so you know.
