hello, i have posted this message in a few replys to the same problem but thought it would be easier if i just make a new thread with the info on. so give this a try and let me know how it goes ( hopefully this will save you wiping your HDD)

ok i think i may have stumbled accross a fix. do hold me to this but the other day i shutdown ffxi but the xbox froze and i had to turn it off at the mains. so i thought to myself oh hell no im not going through another 6hrs of downloads so rung round some mates to see if they were free for me to do the two 360 trick. managed to arrange with a mate to do this but i was messing around on xbox marketplace trying to dl some demos when i decided to play my ipod through my 360. i was listening to 2001 dr dre(what a class album i must add) and was looking through the memory settings but when i came out of the option i pressed the eject disc option by accident and then selected the close disc tab. i listened to the xbox warm up twice and on the third attempt prepared for dissappoitment and anger but to my suprise the message came up explaining playonline was not shut down properly and that this can cause corrupt data so i clicked start playonline and heypresto it worked. this is the first time i tried it whilst listening to my ipod and i dont want to try it again just incase it doesnt work but if anyone has this problem i suggest trying this, whats the worst that can happen.

tried this method out but I just had music playing from my network connected PC since i dont have an iPod and it worked!

Im having this problem now myself........the game crashed on my way to the mog house and I started getting this unreadable message.

So its not actually unreadable? just because it crashed and didnt shutdown properly?

Can I also just clarify the fix? Play some music and whilst the music is playing try and start FFXI and fingers cross after a message about it not shutting down it should work?

Im new by the way, only been playing it for two days when this happened so was quite pissed.  Are there ways to help prevent crashing of the game, to my knowledge I didnt really do anything to make it crash

Ok, just tried this exactly as it was written as I wasnt sure I followed it right reading it the first time.

I had to work out how to share my media first as I have no portable device but once I got that working I booted up the box put some music on and then put the disk in and exactly as you said it started up the viewer and came up telling me there was corrupt data and then asked what I wanted to do either continue running, reinstall or uninstall.

Selected continue running and it loaded up as normal....didnt go as far as loading up FF itself but the viewer worked fine.

Fantastic!!!! thanks for making this post I was getting pretty concerned about this.  Just one thing though? Why? basically , why does this work?

well im glad this solution has helped as i know how frustrating this error was. it was completly fluke that i had stumbled across this fix but thought id post it on a many sites as poss. in answer to your ''why does this work''  question i have no idea.

Thank you so much you saved me one massive headache and a 6 hour download.

I'm trying to do it right now and I can't get it to work. I have a Ipod plugged into the front of my 360 and I'm playing music. Then I open the disk tray with the Final Fantasy XI disk in the tray then I hit the A button on the controller and the disk tray closes, it spins up one time then stops and says play playonline viewer. I hit the A button it starts to try and load the game and  spins up for a few seconds and stops then I get a disk error message.

"The game could not start. Please download the game again.

So can some one help me or am I going to have to reformat my hard drive to get it play it again?

instead of clicking start click to install viewer. this will not remove ffxi just reinstall the viewer that takes about 5 mins. the only thing you may lose will be your macro's unless you saved em to the server

Firstly you need your PC and xbox through the same modem/router and then you need windows media player 11 I believe.

Under the library tab on the WMP there is a little arrow pointing down...click that and there is an option there that says "media sharing".  Should be as simple as ticking the box to share media and then allow the xbox access just under the tick box.

Now when you have the pc and xbox on you can go to the "video" or "music" tabs on the xbox and your pc name should pop under.  Click that and select what you want.

woohoo ty ^^ i ripped a song from a CD to xbox, then removed the CD, played the song and inserted FFXI O.o Squeenix needs to fix these weird quantum singularity bugs :P

I couldn't get it to work so I just reformatted the hard drive, installed the game again and download all the stuff that was on it before but first before I did all that I made a list of all the stuff I wanted to keep so I didn't download stuff I didn't want anymore. All together it maybe less then a day to do and ether way your just going to have to reinstall the game even if you get your 360 to read your disk again.

you dont have to reinstall the game if that method above works, it takes 6 hrs to upload everything which unfortunatly cant be helped if you cant get this method to work. although there is another method i have heard about but it requires 2 xbox's which could be alot of hassle. if you have to reinstall playonline it only takes about 5 mins and doesnt interfere with ffxi data only the macro's you have set.

When I got back and tried to start it from the dashboard I kept receiving unreadable disc errors. I was getting upset until I found this post.

Popped in my iPod and played a song, while that was playing just started the game like normal and worked like clockwork. Thank you for saving me the trouble and embarrassment in possibly returning the game only for it to happen again. Deserves a sticky until they resolve this problem.

no probs dude. i cant tell you how many people have written on forums about buying multiple ffxi games and also taking them back and arguing with retail staff at the fact that it doesnt work lol. SE should do something about this and alert sellers of this problem.

wow this actually made the game startup..... that is wierd..... thank you for finding this out.

Out of two days of trying to go back and forth with E-mail tech support from Square? This small but very helpful forum post has saved my heart from a lot of stress. Thank you all so much for with out the true community gamers I would be in limbo with no FFXI adventuring. Once again Thank you all so much. All I did was took a USB Drive popped like 2 game music MP3s on it clicked it into the from USB port played the music right from the drive and then launched game from dash.! Bingo it works...I didn't believe this would work until it worked. This must get sticky for ever....!    So were is everyone from and what servers do you game on? I am lvl one and I'm still installing..lol

glad to hear this could help. i may mail off to SE to let them know of this fix. i no longer play this anymore am going to wait for ffiv gets released. mmorpg's take up so much time i just decided to give it a rest for a year or so.
