Borderlands?
Has any mass effect fans here tried borderlands?  I am trying to figure out if I want to buy it.  They have a buy 2 get one free sale going on at best buy and thought about picking it up.  I am just looking for some opinions on the game.  I wish there was a demo for it >.<

I understand I am in the wrong forums, but I feel if I ask if anyone asks borderlands in the right forum, all I will get are bias answers.  Seeing as how I am a huge fan of Mass Effect (Probably my favorite game ever) so hopefully this forum will get me the best answers from people who probably have the same kind of tastes in video games as I do.

Re: Borderlands?
If you played Red Faction:Guerrilla Warfare any it reminds me of that game. I like it (only rented) the jump in/off online play so far but after I'm done with the missions in the story I doubt I'd play for any long extention past that- but if your still playing Mass Effect regularly I bet you'd get a little more play out of it than I.

Wha...?  How is that?  Gameplay-wise I don't see any similarities.  Maybe in the setting, but otherwise no.

I personally didn't like Borderlands (loved ME).  It's really slow off-line.  However, apparently the way to play is co-op, which a lot of people say they enjoy.  But as far as drawing comparisons between the two titles, they're about as far apart as you can get in the action RPG genre.

yeah I didn't relize I didn't type all I was thinking (a bad habit of mine)...I meant the feel of it with the running from one place to another rpg element of it. But yeah having a group does add to the experience if you can chat while moving from place to place, a lot of downtime between events aside from random enemies if your playing alone.

TBH, form what I have seen, Borderlands looks terrible with it's very small plot, gun-toting masucline setting and lack of role play. Mass Effect is much better.

Re: Borderlands?
Borderlands is a shooter Diablo-clone. If you like Diablo-clones, you will love Borderlands. If you want an RPG with actual role-play, it isn't the game for you.

Personally, I love Borderlands.

borderlands is all about grinding. theres a little bit of story but its forgettable. on the 360 it can be compared to sacred 2 or too human. level up, get the best gear, have fun with friends. thats what its about. liking mass effect doesnt make borderlands a recommendation for you but its an enjoyable game.

Yeah, I don't like games without stories, Borderlands seems to be more of the kinda game were you just kill and level up. Seems pointles.

Re: Betreff: Re: Borderlands?
I loved Mass Effect since day 1 and just started playing it again last night.  That said, I also have Borderlands.  Borderlands plays like call of duty in the sense that it is a FPS and the controls are identical.  There is no gun customization, only random chances at good guns.  Honestly there ARE a lot of guns, but I have only found 1 that I like and I'm a level 50 on my second play through.  You can customize your character only slightly using colors and a few upgrades on your special weapon/move.  Easy achievements and easy game play.  Also, it IS more fun with friends so be sure you have 3 other buddies that own it.  It is a fun game, but if grinding for hours with a little reward sounds fun to you then get it.  I don't regret buying it and I will continue to play it, but Mass Effect is a much better RPG.  Good luck in your decision.

I disagree. True, you can't customize appearance, but by changing where skill points are spent, you can change how the character plays. The changes aren't drastic, but they do make a difference.

Maybe you define "grind" differently than I do. (I don't mean that sarcastically.) To me, grinding means "going to an area and killing the respawning enemies over and over to gain XP." Borderlands does not have that kind of grinding, IMO, because there are always quests to do.

On the other hand, enemies DO respawn and you do have to kill the same ones over and over as you travel around going from place to place. In that respect, Borderlands does have a bit of a grind.

Mass Effect is a much better RPG.

This, I agree with completely!

ME is an RPG. Borderlands is an Action RPG. There is nothing wrong with Action RPG's (I have several that I play frequently), but they don't have the character development or story of an RPG.

I grant you those, especially the bit about Action RPG.  That was an oversight on my part.  Good catch.  Two great games, so its all about your style really.  Hope we helped you OP.

I might go a step further and say that (gameplay-wise) Borderlands is a much closer relative to Bioshock than it is to Mass Effect, though BL has a lot less story than either.
