I'm a little ways past Act IV right now and I'm playing through the game on Hardcore (since insane is locked on the initial playthrough) and I have to say that the insta-deaths throughout my playthrough have been really hurting the enjoyment factor that I am getting out of this game.

Insta-death... FTL???  yes.

well some weapons, like boomshot and torque bow are instant kills regardless of difficulty, just stay back and you will get it

Actually, if you play on casual you can survive a direct hit from boomshot or getting stuck with the torque if you're at full health.  Still, stay in cover, pop up and do some damage and then put your head back down.  Rinse and repeat until all enemies are dead.  If you're still having a hard time, it helps to get someone to do co-op with you.

The best way to do it is to play co op. that way you won't have insta  death....well except for the parts where you split up.

I actually thought that would be the case, otherwise how would "casual" difficulty constitute itself?

No, I'm not having trouble with the game, it just bothers me when there's one enemy between me and a checkpoint and he insta-kills me by sniping me with a torque bow.

And GoW is definitely not the only game guilty of this poor type of game mechanic, CoD is also very guilty of putting players through similar frustrations.

well torque bows are very predictable, once the light is up get into cover.
