New Consoles? No way!!
If you caught last night's episode of X-play (which will be replayed a dozen or so times).  Adam "I'm so liberal it hurts" Sesslar did a top 5 reasons we DON'T need a new console.  While I agree with his reasons, I'd like the community here to get in on the act.  Give a couple of reasons (and yes, a game you haven't played yet can be a reason) you think the "next-gen" of consoles should hold off for a while.  Here's mine:

1. A mess of games I haven't played yet (Including Halo 3...I know!!)
2. There's still so much this current gen of consoles can do that hasn't been done yet.
3.  Project Natal...nuf said
4.  All my online buddies will leave me behind because I can't afford a new console right now.

Well, the one reason I would want a next-gen of consoles?  To drive down the price of the PS3 when I fiinally get one in 2012!!

Dude, Moderators, don't lock this please.  There might be some talk of some competing consoles, but please do not lock it.  Microsoft rules all.  There I said it, are you happy?

Re: New Consoles? No way!!
I miss Xplay... I hate that they took it off regular cable. And why the "I'm so liberal it hurts"?

I think the main reason why we should hold off for a little longer is just that: this is the next generation. Why should we find another generation when we're just getting into the meat of the current generation? Games look SO AWESOME right now, better gameplay is being implemented, and there are so many outlets for fun right now (like Community games, XBLA, Natal, etc.).

I agree with M$ that this would be a viable console up until 2013, or even 2015; the only reason why it wouldn't is if they come out with something before then. The main reason that the last Xbox died so hard was because of the (weaker, less fanboy-ish word for awesome) power of the 360.

If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion. -DL

Re: New Consoles? No way!!
3D TVs are only 2-3 years away from being affordable. It would be foolish to release a new generation of consoles that couldn't take full advantage of this emerging technology.

I don't think we'll be seeing a new generation until at least 2011 though and most likely 2012. That's with the exception of the Wii which needs to get on the HD bandwagon now that the Xbox and PS3 are getting their own innovative controllers.

Those controllers are the surefire indicator we won't be seeing a new generation for at least 2 years. Now that selling the consoles is actually profitable, Sony and Microsoft are trying to extend their lives as long as possible. These add-ons mean they have more time to sell consoles at a profit and the peripherals themselves should be an earnings positive.

I think 2012 is even too soon.  If you look at it, that's only 3 holidays away (I don't count 2k9 b/c we're already in the holiday release period for this year).  That would be 2010, possibly 2011 for Natal (even though everyone knows Natal is going to work for the next gen from Microsoft b/c it's coming in so late in the cycle), 2011 for some Natal games and 2012 for cleanups like the last Mass Effect game in the trilogy and the third Assassin's Creed.  I'm gonna say 2011 E3 announcement for next gen, 2012 trailers for games and stuff, and a holiday 2013 release (with the PS4 releaseing same year).  I think Nintendo is going to ride the Wii wave for quite a while.  They're still selling truckloads of them, even more now that there sub $200, so they'll hold off as long as they can.  I still see them needing to put something out with a graphics upgrade around 2012 b/c the distance now between the Wii and the other systems performance wise is pretty huge, I can't imagine in 2 years what it will be like.

Re: New Consoles? No way!!
I honestly do not think that the next wave of consoles will hit anytime soon. Why? First of all, as time goes on, improvements can be made with system updates and peripherals like Natal. Secondly, graphics can only go so far. How long will it take until we start actually controlling people in a video game?

Also, in this crappy economy, I don't think consumers are going to be running to the store to purchase a $500 product. This generation of gaming just has much more fight left in it; it won't end anytime soon. I personally think that we won't see the next wave hit until 2012-2014. I think that this generation can last for a good 10 years.

Well, I think graphics of course still have a long way to go.  We're still not up to the "Jurrasic Park" level and look how long ago that movie came out.  While we are narrowing the gap between Renderred CG and Real-time CG we're not quite to the point wher renderred cg technology is, which I believe is what the ultimate goal is...although it is out in the very far future I do believe.
