Wireless Adaptor not being recognized
Hi, I have had my xbox 360 network adaptor for over a year now, and just recently it stopped working well.  It shows a red light instead of green, and I have tried removing it from the console, setting network settings to factory default, etc.  That only worked once, and now, when I try to sign into xbox live, it tells me to "Test Connection," and the xbox can't even get connected to the adaptor itself.  I don't know what's wrong, I still have my month of gold, and I don't want to waste it.  It's already been about 2 weeks of waste.  Please help me find a solution.  I have tried all the solutions they gave on the xbox.  Whenever I sign on, connection fails, and I am required to test connection, which also fails.

Re: Wireless Adaptor not being recognized
I used to have this problem.

I tried changing some things with my router and ever since then my adapter has worked fine. I believe I changed the channel on my router and made sure UPnP was turned on and my NAT was set to open. What type of security are you using? WPA? WEP?

Re: Wireless Adaptor not being recognized
A recent update for the Xbox added some wireless features.  Some people had to go into their routers and completely redo all the wireless settings after receiving this update.

A few had to turn wireless security off completely, in their router, as a first step, then turn it back on after getting connected.

WEP is fine.  But you might try it without any security, as a test, just see if it will connect that way.

Security as in firewall?

By the way, I did 'factory defaults' on network settings, and the options for IP, etc.  are now numbers like 0.000.00 etc

Should I put in my IP  for it to work?

No, not firewall.  Turn off   WEP in the wireless security settings.  change it to OPEN in some routers. Or just disable wireless security in other routers.  You want wireless to be enabled, but without any WEP or WPA.

The 0000 numbers just means the Xbox does not have a connection to get an IP address from.   That will change when you fix your wireless connection issue.

Re: Wireless Adaptor not being recognized
thank you

My problem got solved...I followed your tips and also the xbox 360 network support pages.  Connection worked after I removed my router, unplugged the wireless network adaptor, put it back in..so it showed scan for networks, chose my network, put in my WEP key.

BUT, after I turned off my xbox 360 and turned it back on, it went back as before, connection failed..  Why is that happening?

My system is doing the same thing.  Solid red light and won't recognize any network. I can't even get "configure wireless connection" to show up.  It only has "IP Settings" and "DNS Settings."  I have no idea what's up.

Try switching it to one of the other USB ports on the front of your Xbox and see if that makes any difference.

I did that, the wireless network adapter started showing a green light, which means connected.  But, once again, when I turned off my xbox and turned it back on, it was red..and no network connection.

Re: Wireless Adaptor not being recognized

you know that a recent "system update" from Microsoft modified the wireless capabilities of the Xbox (it added WPA2) .

Since then there has been quite a few posts about wireless issues like yours.

I am beginning to wonder if that wireless update messed something up or caused some existing problem to come to the fore.

but it does not appear to be widespread, as I got the update and my wireless adapter worked fine afterward.  I am sure there are many of them that are working fine.

I just don't know what the key factor is here.   It may be specific to certain wireless routers.

Re: Wireless Adaptor not being recognized
Lets collect some information

What make and model is your router?
Is your wireless adapter the Microsoft USB adapter?

How far from your router is your Xbox located?

Does your wireless network name  have any spaces in the name?

Is your SSID or network name left at the router's default, or have you changed it?

You are trying to use WEP,   have you tired WPA ?

You have tried using no wireless security and still have an issue, right?

The primary issue is:

Your Xbox will not retain the wireless connection info and needs to be constantly re-setup to connect to  your router.

Is that right

Could you take your Xbox to a friends house that has wireless and see if it will connect there?

Do you have any manual entries in your Xbox's network settings, like IP address or MAC address?

Re: Wireless Adaptor not being recognized
Weird, right now it's working so far and I turned the xbox on and off about twice, and the light is green everytime, unlike it being red everytime before.  The network adaptor's in a certain position, and hooked to the bottom USB port of the two front ones, it's right infront of my 360, but when I move it, the light turns red or off and I lose connection again.  Weird.

What make and model is your router?( I have always used this router, and it has always worked fine, all year before I sent in my xbox for RROD repair )

Is your wireless adapter the Microsoft USB adapter?Yes, made solely for xbox 360

How far from your router is your Xbox located?upstairs is the router, downstairs is the xbox

Does your wireless network name  have any spaces in the name?    no

Is your SSID or network name left at the router's default, or have you changed it?doubt it

You are trying to use WEP,   have you tired WPA ?WEP always, never tried WPA

You have tried using no wireless security and still have an issue, right?yes

The primary issue is:

Your Xbox will not retain the wireless connection info and needs to be constantly re-setup to connect to  your router.

Is that right?  yes, that's the main problem ( even though it's working now strangely, as stated in above post..but only under some circumstances)

Could you take your Xbox to a friends house that has wireless and see if it will connect there? uhh not sure

Do you have any manual entries in your Xbox's network settings, like IP address or MAC address?None, I always do Automatic

it's right infront of the xbox 4 quadrants.. and hooked to the second usb port infront.. and whenever i move the adaptor, the light changes from green to red, but unlike before, turning on the xbox still shows the green light, unless it's moved.

I know you said it is one you have used for a while, but what is the make and model.

Also, have you upgraded the firmware in the router.  That can make a difference also.

okay.. it's not working again and it's still hooked to the second usb port infront of the box..... frustating .........for about a week now..

Make and model of router is Westell VersaLink Model 327W.
Also, I don't know if this information might be useful, but I have 3 computers in the house, and internet access for all 3 works perfectly fine.  It's just the xbox.

Re: Wireless Adaptor not being recognized
it is not necessary, it is just one way to test to see if the problem is in your Xbox or in your router.

Are you able to connect your Xbox to your router with a Ethernet cable, just temporarily, to see if everything works that way?

Re: Wireless Adaptor not being recognized
Oh My God! Apparently I did not know that there was an object on the shelf above my xbox, that was blocking the wireless adaptor's antenna..because as soon I moved the object, the light turned from red to green. WOW So far it's been working and I've turned on the xbox and off several times. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HELPING De Menace. I can't believe the solution was something this simple and in my face. I do hope the object blocking my connection was the problem! I hope it doesn't go back to not working again.

But is it failing in a different place this time? Does it make it to the Internet, but fail at Xbox Live or is it failing in the same way?

Both lol..it's like each one everytime I do connection test...very weird and frustrating.
oh but at least when the green light shows up, it shows
xbox --> the network name here ---> internet --> xbox live

but with the red light..it only shows
xbox --> Network --> internet --> xbox live

Alright, so this morning I turned on my xbox to see if connection was working.  First time sign in, no connection, so I tested connection and the xbox --> network name here --> internet --> xbox live, showed up..and slowly, it got connected.

So, it's connected right now, but that is due to change the next time I try to connect.. or I may get disconnected automatically like yesterday, when I lost connection while the light on the wireless adapter was still green.

Have you been able to try by-passing your wireless and connect directly to your router with a cable, just temporarily, to see how it performs on a wired basis?

I believe the ethernet cable comes with my xbox.

This morning I turned on my xbox again, adapter in the same position as always, and the light is red.  I can't make it green..just like all the way back to before.

Yes, typically a 15 to 20 ft cable comes with the Xbox.

ugh... my only tv is downstairs and it's big so I can't move it near my router which is upstairs ....  the cord isn't long enough to reach the router upstairs, unless I poke a hole thru the ceiling..  I wish I could just carry my xbox upstairs and find out if live is working with the ethernet cable without the need of a tv.
