Router is problem not cable modem...
I played xbox live on modem and didnt lag or get disconnected one bit. I got a Belkin G+ mimo router. http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=272220 . I turn all pc and laptop off connected to router to play xbox live off router. It lags every 5 mins or so and disconnects constantly. What should I do?

Make sure UPnP is enabled on your Belkin  AND  make sure you have the latest firmware.

You do NOT, want all those things enabled at the same time.  They all do similar kinds of functions and can interfere with each other.   Only use one at a time.

Trying to use all three at the same time could cause your problem

I am not sure I understand your answer accurately.  But you do not want them "at the same time",  you want them individually.  You need to make sure you disable the others when switching between them.

Here is the process, on a very limited basis:

1. Do a "Factory Reset" of your router (this puts it in its default mode).

2. Enable UPnP.   (make sure the Xbox is on fully automatic)

If that does not work then

1.  Do a "Factory Reset" again to make sure it is in default mode.

2. Enable the DMZ.  You will need to put a static IP and other information in your Xbox Network settings and enter that IP in the DMZ settings of  your router.

If that does not work then

1. Do a "factory Reset"  again, to clear all other settings.

2. Set up Port forwarding on your router.   Forward all ports to the IP of the Xbox, which is still on a static IP.

If that does not work then post back here with the Make and Model of your router  AND your modem

Re: Router is problem not cable modem...
Alright I did all three of those and it still disconnects me after 5 mins at least sometimes less. MY router is Belkin G + MIMO model number F5D9230-4 and my modem is comcast model number DCM4253.

What I do know is when plugged into xbox from modem it doesnt lag at all.So its not my connection.

Actually I did. I tried it last night for GTA4 and kept getting disconnected. Tried it this morning with modern warfare 2 and didn't lag one bit!

Perhaps it is more "game" related and not your network equipment

Well it started again..... I tried each of the 3 settings again and I get disconnected from every game session in any game I play.Can you tell me what my virtual servers ports should have opened? Its my router cause my modem never lags or disconnects me from any game.

Re: Router is problem not cable modem...
Well the ports you need are as follows:

NAT ports are
            * TCP 80
            * UDP 88
            * UDP 3074
            * TCP 3074
            * UDP 3330 <- this one is not listed by MS, but some good sources say its needed.
            * UDP 53
            * TCP 53

However, using DMZ settings on your router should open "all" ports to your Xbox, so that should work too.

Re: Router is problem not cable modem...
Can you try a direct connect to your modem, just temporarily, as a test;  this will tell us if your problem is in your router or somewhere else?

Well that pretty much means it is your router.

Now , I am not a big fan of Belkin stuff,  it is typically the "KIA" of the router world.   Cheap in price and cheaply made.    But lots of people use them with out problems, so they can work.

I believe in your case, you just have a bad one.   It may have heat problems or poor wiring.    My best recommendation at this stage is that you buy a different make of router.  Try a Linksys or Dlink.

Here is the thing. I moved pc and everything upstairs. Downstairs. I never had this problem.Router worked perfect with xbox live. It might be the wiring....What kind of wiring would be best to use in this case for all the wires to the router.

Yes, if you are running the Xbox through some "wall cable" , it is possible that there is a problem with the wiring in the wall.   You could buy a 100Ft Ethernet cable, and by-pass the wall cable ,  to test this idea.

Some times the cables in the wall have kinks, or they are to close to power lines,  and it causes bad signals in the lines.

That is a good thought

Re: Router is problem not cable modem...
you want straight through.    from Xbox to router.  First.

If you modem is connected to your router via a wall cable, then you could "replace" that next (with the long Ethernet cable) and see if that helps.

Ok,  is part of the Ethernet from Xbox to router in the wall?  In other words, do you have a "Data Jack" in the wall near the Xbox and you run an Ethernet cable from the Xbox to the wall and the cable in the wall ends up at your router?

So you just have a standard Ethernet cable between your Xbox and your router, it is not in the wall.

Ok,

Now,  out of your router, going to the modem.   Do you run an Ethernet cable from your router's "Internet Port"  and plug that into a wall "Data Jack".   The wall cable then leads to a modem?

I dont have no data jack in a wall.Ethernet cable for internet port on router goes to my modem not a wall. Only thing that comes out of the wall is the main cable like tv cable to my modem.
