Nobody on any test team, developement team ever got sick, or even remotely sick.  We've put in hundreds of hours in multiple TVs playing the game over and over.  Don't by into the placebo effect either, if you think you'll get sick you probably will.

So there wasn't the "Play 'till you puke" rule for the testers?  It would have been faithful to the original and historically accurate.

We tried, but I guess our guys had iron stomaches.

We are going to experiment wtih a new view angle with the game.

Currently the game has a 40 degree verticle and 73 horrizonatal view angle (on widescreen TVs).  The original was 40 degree verticle and 80 horrizontal, but it had that huge HUD at the bottom.  When we removed the HUD but added in Widescreen we lost 7 degrees.

Our new build we just made is 112 degrees horrizontal and 67 verticle.  This is closer to something like Unreal Tournament.  However this is very much NOT Marathon, which is why we didn't do that in the first place.  But we are going to see what people think in the test teams.  If anyone feels it is better we will ask Microsoft to do a title update to make this an option.

There's no gaurentee this will fix some people's nausea.  It's an older sprite based game, it's going to be different for some people, nothing will change that.

I haven't experienced nausea personally, but I'm all for it. There's something to be said for a game that it so intense it harms the player. Weeds out the weak I say. MOAR!

Aheh, sorry.

Everyone is giving into the hysteria of the whole thing.  I think when it comes right down to it, its just a matter of the narrow perspective of some of these old FPS's.  Games like Doom, Wolfenstein, Duke Nukem, and Marathon, all had this perspective and for anyone old enough to have played them in their hayday... this motion-sickness "problem", is a non-issue.

No. Hysteria? I downloaded the game, booted it up, and was immediently sick and dizzy within 2 minutes. I then came to the forum and saw I wasn't the only one. No outside sources influenced that in any way. I had no clue anyone was having problems. The fact IGN, and so many other people are saying it's a problem means it isn't some kind of mob mentality problem.

Yes, some old FPS games are hard to play for some people. However, I played Doom, Wolfenstein, Duke Nukem, etc. Along with Quake and all that. FPS has been my favorite genre ever since I played Doom. This has *never* happened.

It's good some of you aren't having problems, enjoy the game. That does not mean because you aren't experiencing any problems that no one else could possibly be having some. Just like a small percentage of the human race is immune to nerve gas. Everyone is different, and it's obvious that alot of people are having issues that aren't the normal kind of weapon bob/quick turning etc. problems.

I don't know what it is, but obviously there is something in the campaign only that is causing people to get nasueated and dizzy. If it was just the old FPS feel, the doom board would of been flooded with motion sickness topics and reviewers would of commented on it too when that came out. Which didn't happen.

Add me to the list of those that got ill playing.   Like others here, I have NEVER gotten motion sickness before at all.  I have played all types of FPS/Flight games in the past.

To those that are not bothered by Marathon......wonderful.  This is definitely not a "non-issue" as it is effecting way too many people.

yeah good idea.  I have to go and spend more money on a drug that I usually don't need, feel the effects of said drug for 4-6 hours while i am not even playing and at work, and then if i feel like firing up the game at night, take the drug again and have sleep patteren interupted. NO thanks.  My body works just fine without the interference of drugs to play a video game from 1995.  I will just aviod until the framerate is slowed down, or the issue is fixed in some other way.  I will keep checking the forum to see if anything is done about this as i do like this game, and would like to buy it.

yeah we are all just making it up.  Get over yourself. I have Doom, i play it a bunch and never even came close to getting sick.  I just went on a fishing trip where i was out on a small boat for 4-5 hours a day and never got motion sickness.  This game screws with the optical nerve somehow and makes me feel all dizzy, the original Marthon did not do this at all. despite what the "tester" says i think it has something to do with the upgraded framerate, perhaps not directly but indirectly.  The game moves faster and smoother because of this. Or at least gives the appearance to the human eye that it is moving faster.  The game makes me feel like i have just played that childhood game of closing my eyes and spinning around the handle of a bat 10 times and racing someone else who just did the same thing.  I am still feeling the effects two hours after playing for 15 minutes. Yeah call me a whiney gamer, also we are not the only ones complaining.  I have just read a few reviews on-line that says the SAME thing.  Placebo my *** because i never read one review until just now.

Aye, exactly. People like you and me would not be so adamant about this if we did not feel for sure that it is a problem with the game itself. That's kind of where my thought process was going too. I definetly feel like it's some kind of optical nerve problem where something that our eyes might not even acknowledge is a problem is making us sick.

Question real quick for the people who ARE NOT having problems, HDTV or SDTV? And how close are you sitting to it?

I have a 50" HDTV but I am sitting across the room from it and I think that helps alot.  I used to get sick on the old FPS of the DOOM era but so far I've just gotten slightly queasy with Marathon (not enough to really bother me) and that was after playing for a couple hours.  I did turn on camera bob and lower the sensitivity as well and that does seem to help.  Motion sickness comes from your brain getting signals from your eyes that you are moving but nothing from your ears saying you are moving (and vice versa) so I think that if you sit back further from the TV so you can see your surroundings better and don't tunnel vision into the TV you will be alot better off.  When I heard about this I figured that I would certainly have problems because I used to get a little queasy with the old FPS like I said but so far I am doing OK.  So definitely check out the demo and adjust the settings and your distance from the TV if you are really interested in playing the game.  It is a really fun game especially over Live so for me it was worth it for sure.

this is good advice.  I tried sitting further away from the TV (32 inch flat screen 1080 HD LCD) to where i can actually see my surroundings and it helped a bit, i still felt a little sick though.

Why does your list of played games say Marathon: Durandal. Not played by crunchypanda?

Add me to the list. I played for about 30 minutes and it made me woozy and gave me a headache. I was playing FPS games long before they ever came to the consoles and that never happened until last night. Usually it's the chuggy games with lousy framerates that give me a headache.

Add me to the list.

23 years of age, 37" HDTV at about 4 meters' distance in a well lit room, feeling extremely sick after only a few minutes playing. Never had any problems like these whatsoever before, and like many others in this thread I played most of the old FPS classics so I guess I should be used to the "old style".

It's good to see the developers are trying to cure this. Sure hope you come up with a solution, because I love the game and would like to play it through without having a bucket handy!

32 inch HD TV, sitting about 6-7 feet away. I played 2-3 hours last night and no problems yet...

No more DLC if you have moved to another country ?

It is nice to see the devs trying to fix it. It would be even nicer if those devs did not accuse people of lying or jumping on the motion sickness bandwagon while throwing around thinly veiled insults and claiming it's a "placebo effect".  Now we find out that even game reviewers are getting sick. Are they lying too? I seriously doubt it. If there wasn't a problem, this subject would have never been brought up at all.

How many other games can you think of that have had this many complaints about motion sickness? Do you really believe people are making this up? Get over yourselves. This problem is real. People have paid for a game that is barely playable because it makes them sick. I'm one of those people.  Get off your elitist soapbox, accept that your game is making people sick and fix it.

I wrote in another post that I did experience motion sickness but I want to add that one can play through it thus developing a tolerance.

That's how I overcame my motion sickness to one or two 1st gen FPS games to the point that I actually enjoyed the "disorientating-room spinning- life feels like it sucks headache - if I keep playing I'll definitely hurl" feeling.

Just keep playing and in time you'll strengthen your tolerance.

If the game's worth it.

I have to admit, I got a bit woozy myself.

I don't know for certain, but perhaps Hippieman can answer this.

I know that on PC's, the screen refresh rate can (if set to 60 cycles per second) cause visualy "strobing" for some people, especially under flourescent lighting.  The common assumption is that US electrical power has a frequency of 60 cycles per second as well.  Flourescent lights are not actually a "steady light" but are "flashing" 60 times a second.  So there might be a visual "beat" that occurs (similar to tuning a guitar and listening to the tones cycle).

Would the 60 fps of rendering make it to LCD's, Plasma and projection televisions and possibly cause this to effect some people?

I'm not certain, but as soon as I turned off a flourescent lamp in the room, the woozieness seemed a little better.  But that is anecdotal and could just be completely subjective.

An interesting question might be to see if Europeans gamers are experiencing this problem as well.  Most Euro electrical systems run at 50 Hz compared to the 60 Hz system in the US.  If there is a regional pattern, then that might suggest a culprit.

Re: Motion Sickness topic
Firstly, just wanted to say how fun this game is online. The game that Jim, Hippieman, and myself played the other night was amazing.

Secondly, and to my utter shame, I do end up feeling really sick whilst playing Campaign mode. I've got my sensitivity down to the lowest it can go, and I don't push my left stick all the way up (nice, slow walking pace!). But it still happens. I've messed around with everything, from gamma to gun-bob. Nothing helps, and I'm not keen on taking pills just to enjoy the game. I'll take my time though, and hopefully complete it before September. Otherwise I'll just stick to the multiplayer.

EDIT: Yes we are Recon, well I am atleast.

This is interesting. While playing, I actually thought the screen was flashing at times. "My imagination", I thought... Then came the nausea. I guess some part of my subconscious is able to detect what I can not.
