I got bit by this bug over the weekend when my original 360 finally died.  I kept my original hard drive, plugged it into the new machine, and boom!  my Carcassonne expansion content is all jacked up.  On top of that Puzzle Quest is also bugged i.e. it asks to be unlocked each time I load the game.

So, I've called MS to fix all this.  After numerous phone calls, faxes of original receipts, and lots of screaming I have to wait 30 days for Microsoft to fix all my licensing issues with all my downloadable content.

They are no longer giving out replacement MS points in these cases i.e. machine replacement.  They are now replacing the licensing on the backend and then pushing this information to your GamerTag.  But apparently running a simple script to do this takes 30 days.

I'll keep you all posted.

This is all well known info if you know where to look, but thanks for sharing. Puzzle Quest is being worked on by the devs as we speak. Crystal Quest is also buggered, and devs are working on it. But with Carcassonne, no one has even been able to REACH the devs, despite e-mailing Sierra. Bottom line folks, boycott all future Sierra XBLA games until this is fixed!

Good luck on getting it fixed in 30 days.  Some people on the xbox forums have reported the process taking as long as 4 months.  Also, the drm system is messed up across all xbox live arcade games.  Go read this article to see what I'm talking about: http://www.consolecomplaints.com/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=4&p=4#p4

If you like what the guy has to say, be sure to go digg it at digg.com.

Sadly, no XBLA DRM article has ever made it onto Digg.  This is due to the heavy pro-Microsoft slant on that site.

BTW - This issue is reported in full in the following post: http://forums.xbox.com/1159815/ShowPost.aspx

"Expansion Load Failed." Anyone else get this?

Same here. Bought Carcassonne with Kings and Barons, then my XBOX was replaced due to the 3 red lights and now the expansions will not load.  I too am one of the people who actually paid $10 for this game. I am extremely disappointed and now I feel cheated for not only paying for the game, but also for buying an expansion that no longer works.  Can you guys either fix this or refund my MS points?Storm [st]

All purchases are non-refundable.. so there is no chance of getting a refund unfortunately.

This isn't won't affect me buying future XBLA games, but it will definitely prevent me from buying expansion packs, especially those by Sierra. No way do I feel like going through this again.

I have the same problem!  Except ALL my expansion content is missing from my XBLA games, and probably retail too, since I bought a new 360 to replace a broken one.  What a waste of money.  I will not buy another MS console in the future until DRM is FIXED!  I think the only thing that will work is to have PICKET DEMONSTRATIONS at Redmond HQ and inform the mass media.
God bless you, my man. I just got off the phone with MS. After speaking with 2 people til I was blue in the face, I realize that MS will do NOTHING to fix this. Their solution for me was to pay for the content again. This is what they told me! This is a freaking CRIME, and I guarantee that it will eventually bite them in the *** when enough people are eventually affected. I will not buy anything else from MS either. All the LIVE breakdowns in this past month was the last straw for me because I couldnt even play ANY of the Live Arcade games that I PAYED for. Microsoft, you will pay the piper on this one soon enough. Do the right thing already!

www.bbb.org

File an official complaint on their website (Microsoft is located in Seattle when it asks you for that bit of info) and they will investigate.  After they get an explaination from MS, they will reply to you with mediation (sometimes).  It's about as official as it gets without suing MS.  If enough of us file a complaint, then maybe we'll get somewhere.  Until then, No amount of forum complaining will get anywhere.

And if you are truly lazy, you can copy what I said filling in the blanks...

"Under the gamertag "______________", I purchased Carcassonne for the Xbox Live Arcade during the summer of 2007 for 800 Microsoft Points (the equivalent of $10). Several months later, I purchased the expansion packs "Rivers II" and "King and Baron" for the game. These additional packs were 250 Microsoft Points each (the equivalent of approximately $4 each). The expansion packs functioned properly for a month until August when my Xbox360, for which I purchased Carcassonne digitally, broke due to the "Red Ring of Death". The Red Ring of Death is result of hardware failures. I contacted Microsoft Customer Service and they repaired my console. Instead of sending me the original console, they replaced it with a different refurbished Xbox360. As a result, the serial numbers are different. The implication of this is that, now I cannot use my expansion packs for Carcassonne. The original game loads up; however, the expansion packs fail to load. Seeing as I paid approximately $8 for these two packs, and now I cannot use them, I feel that Microsoft is stealing from me. When I contacted Microsoft about this, they told me to buy the expansion packs again. This is unacceptable."

Please edit it a bit so it doesn't sound like we are all (frauduelently) filing the same complaint.

Re: "Expansion Load Failed." Anyone else get this?

If you read the forums you will come across many DRM issues that Microsoft has created not only with the refurbished boxes but also the last update and the implications from that.

There is currently three guys in Texas suing Microsoft over the Holliday issues and the interrupted service they received.  If they have a case for why Microsoft is ignoring the users of their service, what about  the gamers who suffer through broken DRM,s Multi-user boxes segregating games, or the Broken Add-ons.

We all need to contact this lawyer and get in on the multi-million dollar lawsuit that could easily become a class action suit.  Filling in your form is nice but until the corporation feels the pinch only then will they do anything for the little man, not because they want to or because it the right thing to do, no they will do it because it's mandated by a judge.

I just filed my BBB, although not for the same issue.  Good idea though.  Mine has to do with the Halo 3 map packs.  Here's the thread if'n anyone else has had DRM issues there:

So please go there, and spread the news.  Lets try to get a unified DRM complaint thread going that recommends people complain to the BBB in force.

UPDATE:  MS locked the above thread in less than 24 hours after I posted it.  BBB contacted me this morning saying that they had contacted MS and were moving forward with an investigation.  They also stated that MS would be investigating internally as well.

Are you an MS employee?  Can you give us a hint as to the resolution, and what it might be.  I'm still concerned about the fact that my DRM issues are unrelated to a refurb box, and still can't be taken care of.  My DRM for halo3 content doesn't work even on my initiating console.  I just doesn't work period.  Please see the below link for further detail.  I've never had an MS person give me any hope of solving this.  My case definitely violates even MS's bulletproof agreement.

Why do moderators come into rooms just to patronize us with its being fixed when the problem has escalated from one update to the next are they fixing it or fixing the consumers.  I Hate and will not renew XBox Live.

Try not to poke the moderators with a stick too much. It wouldn't help anyone if this thread were locked. I want people to see how many are affected by this problem and that can't happen if it sinks to the bottom.

Lucky never said it would be fixed, only that he would pass on the information to those that may be able to help. I'm happy with that, but if you still want to point a finger, do it at Sierra. :)

Re: "Expansion Load Failed." Anyone else get this?

Who knows, they could be working on making a patch for the software. Something like that would be ideal. If it is that, I would think it's more complicated just because it needs to locate, identify, and load the content in a different way. Some games don't get patched, or when they do they don't fix the issue or make other issues.

Funny, and sage advice to boot.

However, I don't like feeling that a moderator is being pushed to serve as an apologist for disingenuous business decisions. S/he has posted essentially the same two messages here in January that s/he posted in November:
  1. We are aware of the problem and working on a resolution.
  2. I have no further details to offer.
No offense intended to Lucky; his/her job requires him/her to be the public face of this kind of stuff. Because we aren't complete monsters, we don't subject Lucky to the unbridled-but-justified anger we feel toward MS. What gets me is that MS counts on us responding this way: it's an extremely mild version of using someone as a human shield.

Quite frankly, I'll be blown away if this problem is ever resolved. This past week's Xbox360Fanboy podcast (Ep 51, I think) details Alexander Sliwinski's troubles with DRM on his replacement console, and it ain't pretty. His whole house played XBLA games using their own non-Live gamertags, and now they are shut out of playing. On top of that, as he said, "Puzzle Quest is pretty much borked."

Victoly!

Re: "Expansion Load Failed." Anyone else get this?
I just got my callback regarding my BBB complaint this morning, which I didn't answer because they of course called specifically during the hours I told them not to.  But, after another 4 hours on the phone with tech support, I've come to a conclusion.

Nothing we do on the boards, or by phoning in, or by contacting the BBB will do anything.  From what I gather from being bounced back and forth from India (I assume) to the US, is that they plan to tell me I'm SOL.  That is of course until I re-explain to every department that my DRM issues are on the initating console (that always sends them for a loop).  Regardless, they continue to be nothing more than an exercise in high blood pressure.  Here is what I suggest we do as a community:

-Every time you call in tech support, use a speakerphone and record the whole thing to your computer.  You don't have to tell them ahead of time, because the automated message that plays before every tech support connect says the call is already being recorded/monitorred for quality assurance purposes (quality?  Seriously?).
-It's tough, but avoid cussing out the person on the line.  Be insistant, and cover all the key points/arguements discussed here.  Be legitimate and insistant until (as they always do) the tech support gets defensive and rude, etc...
-Save as many calls as you can stomach to make, and combine them as one file.
-Save the file as "Microsoft DRM Theft [your gamertag] [date of call]"
-Upload to youtube using this naming convention, and update with a new one so that we can see in a clear cut way the progression of dates, and the rediculous/lying/inconsistant nature of the 18004myxbox support.  You can, if you so choose, include video, or whatever other evidence you like.
-If we all use the same naming convention with our youtube submissions, when you search for either "microsoft" "DRM" or "theft" it will pull up this huge catalogue of horrific tech support calls.
-Once this list gets high enough, we'll have a very easy/concrete piece of evidence to alert whatever media outlets we like.  It is very clear at this point, that Microsoft can only be made to do anything by negative PR.

Any takers?  I'm planning to start doing this ASAP, as I can't think of another way to push this into the spotlight.
If you give me Goldeneye on XBL, I might be able to get over the fact that MS is a DRM sucking vampire.

Upon hearing of this Wednesday's Crystal Quest title update, which will finally fix the DRM issues with that game, I figured I'd check my old topic.

Looks like no progress here, huh?

Lucky 13 X, if you have any more info on a title update for Carcassonne, that would be awesome.

Re: "Expansion Load Failed." Anyone else get this?

Wow.

I did not expect to see such a deep topic about this.

I thought my problem would be a rare occurrance - but it's clear that the Carcassonne expansions are causing hardware failures in Xbox 360's, as it seems is many, many cases (including mine), users got the red-ring after downloading at least one of the expansion packs.  This is utterly ridiculous.  And this thread has been going for months!

So an expansion kills the hardware, MS foots the bill for a replacement, which may or may not be refurbished, and the game still causes problems.  *tsk*

I don't believe mine is a DRM problem though.  I can play my game fine on the new system - however I do still receive 'problems loading an expansion' when starting it.  I can close the game, and trying 2 or 3 more times and it'll load successfully, and I can play it as if there were never a problem.  However x2, my game has locked up twice in a row, the first two times I tried online Player Matches, before the game finished.

Carcassonne is rife with software errors!  First it kills hardware then it's entirely unreliable as a piece of software.  I'm shocked MS hasn't dealt with this themselves if so many Xboxes are being returned because of this game.

Wow.
