I also had a grinding sound when i inserted a 360 disc and it said the disc was unplayable. Called MS and they said they would send me a box to return it and it would be 2-4 weeks. I told them top go ahead and send it. But I forgot when I bought my 360 from Gamestop in December, I got the protection plan for free, so I went yesterday and they gave me a brand new one. I even went ahead and bought protection on the new one just in case. A month is a long time to wait even if they give a free month of live.

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club
I've been through nine 360's, seven out of the nine was due to the horrific dvd-rom drive. I have documented every dvd-rom drive that has came with my refurbs and the new consoles and every single one of them had the Samsung TS-H943A dvd-rom drive. It is apparent that the Samsung drive has a 100% fail ratio. My 9th is currently on it's way to McAllen, Tx and the CS rep stated that I would be receiving a brand new console.  I definitely cannot catch a break with this console.

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club
is Hitachi the most common drive? Thats what I have, and it says theyve had to make many revisions, and the drive is very fragile.... the BenQ sounds like the best you can get....

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club
In the Elite the Hitachi is the most common dvd-rom drive, as for the premium and the core, the samsung seems to be the favorite. It's rare occasion that you will actually obtain a Ben-Q. My friend was lucky enough to get a Ben-Q drive but like all the drives it failed around 6 months. A Ben-Q drive creates the same amount of noise that the PS3 can produce, almost non-exsistent noise level. It's very smooth and quiet, it's sad that it only lasts for more than 6 to 9 months.

Well, from my experience... having nine 360's and all of them having the Samsung drive. My personal opinion is that they are defective, as for the Ben-Q I have only came across one., that one lasted 6 months as I previously stated before. I wouldn't go as far as saying that they are defective, seeing I have only heard/seen one Ben-Q drive. Personally, I believe that your drive lifespan depends on how many hours of play you subject to your 360. Take me for instance, I game hard, typically 10 hours of gameplay a day. I constantly change games, exit to the dashboard, turn off the console and turn it on. Every single one of these options could take its toll on the drive seeing the laser positions itself everytime you turn it on, exit to the dashboard, and change a game.

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club
My problem started when i was playing gears (this is the scratched disc: 2 circles in it, i just cleaned it with a bit of alcohol and the drive read it), then suddenly, came a sound like if the laser turned off, and appeared the unreadable disc message, but since then, it got worse, began to appear the insert this disc in a xbox 360 console messages, then the "open tray" with a disc in it, i can't make it work, even yesterday i could make it work moving the console while reading the disc and the lasr reactivated or got its full strenght or i dunno, but i could play for a while until it couldn't read it anymore, i'll try to exchange it in best buy...

Quite possibly, i'm sure you guys are aware of what happens when you get the dirty disk read error on the console. It makes a "click click click" that clicking noise is the laser spanning up and down looking for a clean surface to read the data. It all boils down to prolonged exposure.

I'm a new member of the club. My brand new elite was working with a new Gears of War disc. I put in Armored Core 4 that I rented and it doesn't load this game or Gears anymore. It does read movies OK. From the photos posted it looks like this elite has the Hitachi drive. This is probably the beginning of the end of my 360 gaming experience. This console is three hours old...Wow, that didn't last long!

that really stinks...all i can say is atleast it broke 3 hours after owning it instead of 3 hours after the warranty expired! lol... thats no big deal though, just take it back to the retailer and im sure you will get a new one... my friend also had a dud out of the box, it isnt necessarily unheard of....

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club

I recently sent im my 360 due to disk drive problems and the three red lights. I was playing Harry Potter demo and the machine suddenly shut off and gave me the three lights. I started it up again and tried to play gears, it said disk was unreadable, adnt that has never happened before, i switch off my console and switch it back on again and the 3 red lights come up again. I switched it off then on again a couple more times and the red lights came on every time.

My Advice: If your 360 f**** up more than 2 times dont waste your time with it, either get a ps3 or wait until later this year to get a more reliable 360.

Might as well join up to this club.

I'm on my 2nd Xbox (a refurbsihed replacement for my original one that locked up every 30 mins).

First couple of weeks no problems, then disc read errors started.

It kept insisting the disc was a DVD film not a game and plays that daft "movie" instead of launching the game. If I eject and close the tray enough times, eventually it will detect it as a game and play. Once it knows its a game it will play fine for hours (until i wanna switch games). I had the 360 vertical for a while and sometimes it would take over 15 mins of eject/close tray loops to get a game going. Now its horizontal it seems much happier about game discs. I still need a few eject/close trays, but nowhere near as many as when it was vertical.

It also seems (but not 100% proven) to read dics a bit quicker (ie less eject/closes) if I put pressure on the case around the drive tray area when its spinning up, although this may be co-incidence.

It also makes some nasty clunking noises on powerup and shutdown which are worrying but so far no damaged discs.

MS offerend a free "fix" which is bound to be another refurbished jobbie but I'm cutting my losses for now, they might send one back thats worse than this one, at least it works reliably once its in the mood. (Now I've said it it will probably Red light tonight!)

Shoddy hardware indeed this stuff. They should have lifetime guarantees especially considering the cost of the games and the monthly Live account fees.

same exact problem i have, it used to do it only once a month or so saying "please put this disc in a 360", but has progressively gotten worse, tried changing from horizontal to vertical and back, vertical seems to work better, only have to pop it in and out 10-12 times to get it to read instead of 30 times or more when it was horizontal.......so i call M$, tell them about it, they say it needs to be sent in and oh by the way "it's out of warranty, $139.95 please", so i tell them it's been doing it and i just haven't been home enough to mess with it and they tell me i am SOL, pay up or deal with it

It finally died. Clunk noise from the DVD drive when I power up and 3 Red lights. Bye bye knackered console and hello to 25 (minimum I am expecting) days without my game center. Stupid, cheap, crap hardware.

Signed....

I was loaning my 360 to my Dad since I"m going on a trip soon. He calls me up on the phone after a couple of days and says son...I've got some bad news for you.

In an expecting tone of voice...I ask..."red lights of death eh". He's like what? uhh no...I was playing Gears of War and it made a weird crunching noise...and no matter what I do the disc tray keeps popping open.

I hadn't even heard of this problem yet and thought he just must be doing something weird...but I go and pick it up...and can't figure it out either. thank god for warranty.

When I send it in, should I detach the hard drive or are they going to want that as well?

P.s. You've probably seen this but...

http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/home-entertainment/how-to-fix-your-xbox-360s-3-red-lights-of-death-217686.php

It may "fix" my problem. That "Chunk" noise from the DVD drive after he powers it back up is EXACTLY the same noise mine makes when I turn it on (only I still get 3 red lights as I havent attempted this "operation"). I would try it, but my missus wont let me. And I am trying to keep some faith in them providing me finally reliable xbox. Its their 3rd attempt so I know I'm still a nuub, i hear people having 6+ of them and still probs.... 25 "working" days will be a long time to wait :(

Not really. One of my 360's drive stopped working altogether after playing a game I had for 3 days. It's a hardware problem not a disc problem.

same thing happened to me, and it was hard to get it closed.... what i did was timed it so i closed the disc tray, turned off the 360, and i had to hold the tray in so it did not pop out.... this is not good for the tray i would bet, but its already broken, and i figured i wasnt going to turn it on again... then once the 360 is completely shut down, you can release the tray, and it will stay... MS didnt even bother to fix mine, so i got a new consoleYes [Y]

it sucked that i had to resort to that, but it is just too much of a pain... if you tried to detach the disc drive, they might try to say you 'tampered' with it

Hey I tried what you said kinda. As I was pushing the tray back in, I hit the power button...and...the tray finally stayed in.

Of course....now it's emitting this terrible grinding sound...it doesn't seem to be scratching my disk...at least I can try my new game before I send in my 360 this way.

Still the same question though....do people usually detach their hard drives when they send their 360 in?

I had no problem with my Xbox 360 until recently the problem I'm having is that is scratches the discs it has happen with Oblivion and Gears of War. So is this problem with my disc driver. The one thing I notice also that when I try to open the disc tray it occasionally gets stuck and doesn't open right away.
