There are some fixes but I am not posting them here as they involve modification. Try a Google search.

Yet I still cannot play on my 24" 1920 x 1200 native resolution monitor without disgusting scaling issues. In three years this is still not possible :( I mean its nice to see xbox has finally supported 1680 x 1050 but us 24 incher's still have the EXACT same problem as we did before. Upscaled signal to 1920 x 1200 = awful artifacts.

1680 x 1050 with the black bars ends up being 1680 x 945
just like 1920 x 1200 with the black bars would end up being 1920 x 1080 which is standard 1080p

Did MS even think about this ? the reason for all the complaints in the first place is because people have monitors without a 1:1 scaling function on them, well we still don't have the 1:1 scaling function. And we still have to do disgusting aliasing inducing upscaling from a 1680 x 1050 signal.

It's ok even if they did acknowledge this fact it would probably take another 3 years for 1920 x 1200 to be implemented, by that time new consoles will be out or I'll get struck by the 3 red rings. [again]

epic fail is standard.

You're so right!!!
I just bought a 24" and connected it to my 360 (i used it with a Bravia 40", but my wive complains alot, so i bought a 24" monitor for gaming, etc).
I was DISGUSTED after seeing that 1920x1200 is not supported!! I can't have the correct aspect ratio with 1920x1080, its streched out, cause my monitor doesnt do 1:1 pixel mapping. WHY havent they corrected this by now?? They corrected for the 1650x1050 monitors but not for the 24" WHY?
Some things are very hard to understand...

is there a way to convert a tv signal into vga or component? My monitor has vga dvi and component. Preferably under $100 but if they quality is crappy I wont even bother. tv would be nice in my dorm but not super important to me.

Is there a way to reset the resolution back to factory specs w/o going through all the menus?
I recently changed from a PC monitor to a Magnavox 19" LCD TV and forgot to change the resolution back to 640x480 before moving over; so now I get a black screen and a message saying the resolution (1024x768) is not supported. I saw something about pressing RT+Y, but I don't know how to go about that process, if it works.

Even better: If I could get the button combo to select 1440x900 from start up that would be great. I do have audio and I am running NXE.

Thanks

Dude very nice guide for any rookies just getting into the game.  I know that you said this is about the VGA Connection (which I my self use), but sooner or later some rookie is gonna ask about VGA-to-DVI converter, like the  HDMI-to-DVI converter you mentioned, and even then someone will want to know about (ahem too funny) VGA-to-DVI-to-HMI (pre-HDMI models) or HDMI-to-DVI-to-VGA (hey you never know ;-) ).  You might want to add that.

Truly very good guide.

Funny I just came to the forums searching for an audio question...LOL.

" Note: Some speaker sets can use the red and white audio connectors. It is advised to use these where possible for better sound quality. " Do any of you know what I can search for in speakers that support the red and white connectors without using the RCA audio adapter?

Re: Guide to using a PC monitor with Xbox 360
how do i get sound out of the 360 if i use the HDMI>DVI-D converter into my monitor. With the hdmi cable pluged into the 360 the VGA cable cannot be plugged in at all as there is no room. is there a better adapter that just before the converter outputs the hdmi cables audio to red and white rca for audio?

Re: Guide to using a PC monitor with Xbox 360
Great guide. I'm posting here just to share some issues that I am having interfacing my Xbox 360 to my Dell E228WFP 22" flat panel monitor. I use the monitor with my computer through the DVI port at native resolution of 1680x1050 and it looks absolutely crystal clear, perfect.

If I have the XBox 360 connected using the licensed Microsoft VGA cable to the VGA input on my monitor (or the $50 Monster cable brand for that matter), I get bad ghosting issues that are visible in menus and text as well as washed out color and an overall poor picture. The images below show how it looks:
http://fredgolden.net/images/vga1.jpg
http://fredgolden.net/images/vga2.jpg
http://fredgolden.net/images/vga3.jpg

If I use a HDMI to DVI cable that I use to connect my computer to my bigscreen, I get clear, vibrant images from the XBox 360 to my monitor.
http://fredgolden.net/images/dvi1.jpg
http://fredgolden.net/images/dvi2.jpg
http://fredgolden.net/images/dvi3.jpg

The issue on my VGA looks to be a vsync issue of some sort. Probably the VGA connection on my monitor. There are no options that I can adjust on the monitor to try and fix it, I tried them all already. Shame I had to find out now a year after the warranty is over. To get this working on DVI, I will have to get the HDMI audio cable (or hack a component one) to get the sound out.

X360's VGA operate differently to the ones found in computer graphics card. It was designed that way to increase compatibility and to bypass certain restrictions.

Also, most ADC found in monitors these days are average to poor due to the advent of DVI/HDMI and DisplayPort.

So it's best to stick with HDMI/DVI.

You need a compatible monitor and a channel splitter I think.

Re: Guide to using a PC monitor with Xbox 360
Hi all.
I have been using my 24" Dell monitor with my Xbox for a while now.  I have the sound connected to a set of Wireless Sennheiser headphones using the 2x phono to 1 jack shown in the instructions.

The reason I am posting is due to the very poor sound I get when chatting ingame with the official 360 headset.  Everything is at full volume, yet I can hardly hear the other person when playing a game.  I have gone through just about all the settings I can find experimenting but none seem to make a difference.  I dont think its the official headset thats the problem but the setup I have.  That said the option to come through the 360 headset will not work at all :(

Any other (sensible) suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I believe you can only do this via S-Video? Apparently it's a pretty poor quality image aswell.

I'm not sure about using it, but yea s-video is pretty poor quality to put on a computer monitor. I wouldn't recommend getting a VGA cable any longer than that, because the quality really degrades over "long distances".

Sorry, I can't awnser Laptop related questions. I'm pretty sure the monitor slot is outbound for stuff like projectors though, probably the same for your HDMI slot though this is just an assumption on that one.

Re: Guide to using a PC monitor with Xbox 360
I didn't see hookup for Windows Vista for the sound in your guide. Alot of people have the problem of not being able to hear the sound after they have hooked up the audio adapter into the appropriate jack in the back of there PC.  So if I may i'd like to help on this:

Vista Users with Realtek HD Audio
After you have connected the adapter to the RCA's (White and Red Wires) and plugged it into the back of your pc. Follow the simple steps below:

1. Goto Start and up to Control Panel
2. Just click an Icon and type "R" this should make it go directly to the Realtek HD Audio Manager
3. Double Click Realtek HD Audio Manager Icon
4. Most likely you plugged the adapter into the Green Port click the "Green Circle" on the right hand side inside the box. (If not the green, click on the appropriate port)
5. This should have created a "Line in tab" at the top beside "Speakers" and/or "Sterio Mix
6. Unmute the "Recording Volume" and the "Playback Volume"
7. Make sure the volume is turned up on your speakers and on the sliders!

I hope this helped, I had to figure this out by myself because no website was clear with what to do with Windows Vista. Thanks. :)

Mr T pities the fool that read this entire guide. All you need is this sucker:

http://digg.com/d1nI6x

It's 1080p
It's 16:9 (which means no black borders like with 99% of pc monitors which are 16:10)
It has both HDMI, VGA and DVI !
It has 20000:1 contrast ratio and 2 ms response.

And to top things off:   It's cheap

Get one and thank me later...
