You guys are forgetting one major game that had a huge impact on the FPS genre of today. Heretic. Heretic was one of the first first-person games to feature inventory manipulation and the ability to look up and down. It also introduced multiple gib objects spawned when a character suffered a death by extreme force or heat.

Actually, I think System Shock may have beaten out Heretic, but I might be wrong.

Re: Left 4 Dead 2 ??
This is all from memory and my perspective (I don't actually know if it was 'The first')

Duke Nukem was also one of the first games (FPS?) to have reflective surfaces.

I believe Quake was the first to have levels upon levels. Like, a second floor that was directly above a floor you could play on.

Rise Of The Triad was the first to have dead bodies that didn't automatically switch position in relation to where you looked at them. (Doom, the bodies would always face one direction, no matter which way you looked at them)

It also had mass gibs.. like eye balls flying through the air when you killed someone and blood and guts that actually splattered on walls and dripped down them.

Operation: Body Count was the first that I can remember with destructible environments. So, blow up a wall, walk through the wall. Repeat.

Half-Life was the first FPS to have physics (and exploration) based puzzles. It was no longer 'Find the key, killkillkill, repeat.'

Blood quoted lines from 'Evil Dead'. So did 'Duke'.

Soldier Of Fortune was the first to have limbs that you could blow off. Shoot the hand with a Desert Eagle/Shotgun/whatever, bye bye hand/leg/arm/head. So brutal, so awesome.

Kingpin was the first to have random melee weapons (Pipes, brass knuckles, bottles) and MASS amounts of foul language. Much in the vein of the 'Condemned' series today.

Redline was the first FPS/Driving hybrid.

That's all I can remember right now.

And since I'm already down memory lane.. I liked Warcraft better as an RTS. Carmageddon (2!) ruled. GTA3 changed videogames forever and I love Sierra Adventure games.

My doctor says that I have a malformed public-duty gland and a natural deficiency in moral fibre.

Re: Left 4 Dead 2 ??

Wow, you've brought back a lot of good memories. I still remember my family getting our first computer back in 1996 (Pentium 1, 133ghz) and picking up a copy of Duke Nuk'em 3D for $18 because it was priced incorrectly. I would've only been 9 or 10 at the time, I believe. That game was amazing. My friends and I would play it for hours upon hours.

I didn't get into Quake as much as most people did, but I played through a lot of it on the N64 and found it fun.

Rise of the Triad was a great game. I used to play that a lot as well. I can barely remember a lot of it, but I remember having a blast playing it.

I still stand my opinion that this game should not exist, never-mind the previous comments about it being too soon.  I have seen nothing on this game that warrants a standalone purchase.  Melee weapons, daytime levels as opposed to night-time levels, and new common and special infected........are those really a big enough update for some of you?  In my opinion, it should just be dlc for the first game.  The Director 2.0, while large (I'm assuming based on file sizes of the first game), should still be able to be implemented through dlc.  I mean, during the E3 developer walkthrough from ign, the guy explaining stuff to the viewers could not sound less enthusiastic about it if he tried.".......oh, here's some new common infected.........there's a new special infected (not too different from the hunter if you ask me)..........guys.......over here guys........." I mean really.  I will not get this game.  Period.  Especially if that msrp pans out as the final price.

I feel much the same way about Halo 3: ODST.  While it looks to be a much more solid product to me, it's not worth the cost of a full retail title.

For me, rental until a price drop.

You can rest assured that more than enough people will buy this game. If people can justify the full purchase price of sports games every single year with about 1/10th of the improvement from one year to the next, than what L4D offers here, than I am pretty sure L4D2 will sell well.

Than again vote with your money. If you don't like it don't buy. Simple as that.

They released a free pack making the two other campaigns versus maps (though that should've been in at launch), tweaked a huge amount of things in the game, and added a new mode. More support then some developers give.

Either way I'd be buying L4D2, just because L4D is one of the only games I don't get bored of after a while playing online. Plus, it seems that some of the stuff couldn't really be added in DLC, like AI director 2.

I have seen the video before, won't stop me from buying the game. It really seems to me that the amount of stuff they're including would make for a RIDICULOUSLY large download, and as someone said before, its more added content then most other series that release annually (hopefully this won't become a trend with L4D).

Look at the COD series, COD4 and COD:WaW pretty much ran on the same engine, had pretty much identical gameplay, and still sold plenty of games.

Hopefully L4D doesn't begin being milked like another cash cow game series, but I think L4D2 is justified... if they release another one next year, then I might start getting mad.

EDIT: would be nice if Valve released a map editor on the 360 version.

Honestly, I can see Microsoft strongly resisting Map Editors on the Xbox 360?  Why?  If they did that, and gamers could truly create their own maps and custom scenarios like on a PC, then DLC sales would certainly drop, and we can't have the milkage train stop, now can we.

exactly.
I doubt valve will keep making l4d titles maybe because I trust them or do a bit less since l4d2
people are hard at work on l4d maps already, maybe they will be better that the 5 scenarios in l4d2
look at what these three guys can do
with all these free custom maps at gamers disposal I fail to see why l4d2 should exist

I'd generally agree, except Halo 3 did have a map editor, and that was a Microsoft game, plus, if it hurts anyone (though I really don't think it does), wouldn't it hurt the developer more then microsoft?

Do we have free custom maps on the xbox? Does it include things like AI Director 2, and Melee weapons(though theres probably some fairly easy way to put these into the computer version, and release these on DLC)? Yes, everything could probably be made community made, but maps aren't the only thing that they put in the game, and aren't the only important thing for most gamers. Theres still a reason for L4D2, though I'm not 100% convinced that it should be coming out this soon. If it comes with a powerful map editor, or a way to use a map editor on the computer (preferably), and transfer the maps to your xbox, I'd be 100% down.

Halo 3 has Forge, which is not the same as a traditional PC Map Editor that let's you build a Map from scratch, including single player and scripted features.  Still, Forge is a step in the right direction, and then there's another game that Switch pointed out, which I didn't know about.  Regardless, true map editors on a console are ludicrously rare.

And it would hurt Microsoft Game Studios more.  Microsoft is the publisher, they pay Bungie, Epic, Lionhead, etc. to make the games.  Microsoft is also the ones who greatly profit off of purchases made via the Xbox LIVE Marketplace.

thats arguable though. allowing for user generated content can easily be argued to help with sales of the initial product and even curb resale. sure you could sell map packs to a few people but if you allow every player to make their own maps and distribute them, it could increase initial sales on the very basis of a robust community. See little big planet for instance.

That's certainly true, but the other side of the coin is with Map Packs earning over a $1,000,000.00 in a short space of time, such as the Halo 3 Heroic Map Pack before it was reduced to no cost, that's a significant profit for a small amount of work; a great return.  I also know the Halo 3 Legendary Map Pack is also still raking in a lot of cash, but I can't recall the figure.  I believe it's more since it's still being purchased today.

DLC like that is a cash cow, and I can't see Microsoft Game Studios abandoning that in favour of community made maps anytime soon.  Not anywhere near to the modding level the PC community has at any rate.
