Re: why can't we play online for free?

I agree and then I don't.First  I agree that paying for game downloads such as add-ons etc.. should be paid for.
Second I agree with the free multi player idea.Maybe not everyone can afford to pay just to play on the multi player option. My opinion is that everything should stay the same except  the multi player should be free.

But again... approximately 16 cents a day to play and shop on Live.  Consider all the data Live transfers back and forth to you and your friends/session gamers. Consider that you can send text and voice messages back and forth, and Live will hold all of that for you for 30 days. Consider that if you're lucky enough to have friends and family in other parts of the world with Live, you can even bypass long distance phone calls altogether if you all have the right gear (headset, vision cam etc..) Your internet, telephone and cell phone providers do some of the same things, and you pay them. AND you pay them a lot more than $60 a year to do all that.

The bottom line is that to house all those games, game addons, videos, leaderboards, voice messages, text messages, video messages, live voice or video chats is not cheap. I just keep coming back to my 16 cents a day figure. I can't see how anyone sees that as an unfair price. Even if we go back to the start and say $60 a year. Think about it. $60 a year! The only limitations on your gaming time is the rare system shutdowns, your sleep requirements, and your social / professional life. If you were able to play 24/7/365 from your console, Microsoft isn't going to stop you.

For those that are still maintaining the $50-60 per year is too expensive, look at it this way:

You stop and grab coffeee every day on the way to work:  $1-2 per coffee - (approx $5-10 a week )
You rent a movie or game at blockbuster:  $5-10  for a week  (approx. 168 hours)
You go see a movie at the theaters:  $8-15  for 2 hours
You go play at one of those video game cafes:  $5-10 for an hour (there's deals out there I know)
Escorts are not cheap on an hourly basis.
You can rent a Jet Ski:  $60 - 90 per hour.
Rent the Home Depot van:  $50 for the first 75 minutes.

You pay to play and shop on Xbox Live - $60  for a year  (potentially up to 8760 hours if you're a cyborg or vampire). This works out to half a cent per hour, maybe even less, I might have done the math wrong.

Would I love the Gold live to be free as well? Sure who wouldn't. But when I look at the $60 price tag, and I see what I get for that, I have no problem with it, and more importantly, I'm thankful they arent charging a monthly fee instead!!

Just remember, as bad as you think something is, it can always get worse.

Again, just my 2 cents!

Re: why can't we play online for free?
i too do not mind paying the $60 for live or even $20 for 3 months. The exclusive demo's and other goodies is well good. also my friend has a linksystem router and he said anytime he puts a username and password on it it wont let him online. its a (wireless cisco router) so he doesnt put passord on it and it does fine. and i use to go through charter and i had their wireless router which they (charter) told me the router has a built-in security feature in it and it isnt XB360 friendly either.

if you have password for your router try taking it off long enough to see if that works, but if you want it on or already are currently not using it the go with what some of the others have been saying.

 just my suggestions.

you should be able to purchase seperate features of live instead of the whole package , like for example being able to play against other players but not being able to download videos.

Re: why can't we play online for free?
I dunno, i still keep coming back to the 16 cents a day figure. How can anyone argue that 16 cents a day, to play online, chat online, watch movies, download videos, download DLC, and all the other stuff, is a bad or unfair deal?

Maybe its the look of $50 or $60 up front.    Look at it another way, its $4 - $5  per month. Does $5 a month seem unfair for unlimited online playability as well as the other stuff?

Look at mmorpg games (WoW, CoH, CoV, Conan, Warhammer, Everquest etc..). Most of them you pay about $15 per month.  That's just for one game.  The $5 that Live charges, gives you access to any games for the 360 that have online play.

So I'm curious, to those that don't like the idea of paying, consider that its currently about 16 cents a day or $5 per month for everything you have now. What would you consider a fair price for playing online?

why can't we play online for free?
hey guys its been awhile since i got on this so i finally did an it seems that everybody is still not getting what i've been trying to say. everybody is saying 50 bucks for 12 or 13 month is a great price and it is great that is a good deal, but no matter what anybody says no one is understanding what i wrote towards the beginning of this thing. my connection is just fine anybody who has an xbox can connect to it my wifes xbox connects just fine. like i said every couple of months i get kicked off xbox live and i cant connect to it no matter whos internet i try it at. im not saying anything about lag or gliches, that stuff happens in the awsome power of online gaming. i just always get stuck into paying for a couple months that i cant even use. i will spell it out again for the people that talk crap and say that someone doesnt have intellectual capability. get this if i aint got that (yes thats right i said aint im from texas so you can suck it) then why is it everybody keeps thinkin that im talkin about the prices sounds to me that its the opposite. this whole thing was talking about paying for the time we spend playing not for the time that we do and dont. i will go back to the beginning and i will take it slow for the really smart people that cant hang with the down at home people.

i buy 1 year gold, i play for 4 months, xbox live kicks me off for 3 months, then xbox live lets me connect back after those 3 months and i play out the rest of the year, that mean i got to play online for 9 months and not a whole year because xbox live kicked me off for those 3 months. if yall cant understand that im not talking about the prices then yall sould shut up and let someone else talk that know what im talking about!

Re: why can't we play online for free?
I think everyone gets what you are SAYING, but what you are saying just doesn't sound right, and you clearly have an issue that needs resolved.  No one else has these problems that you do.  You are apparently the only person who gets kicked off of xbox live for 3 months at a time.  So the bottom line that everyone is trying to get at with you is that it's not Xbox Live that's kicking you off for 3 months at a time.  There is some other issue going on.  I have been on xbox live since Halo 2 came out, and I have never had any problem with it, except when they have SCHEDULED downtime, which only happens about 2-3 days out of the year.

Now I tried to PERSONALLY help you with your router configuration, but you stopped responding to my emails.  So if you aren't willing to go through the troubleshooting, then you can't say that you know there's nothing wrong.

Have you talked to your internet provider about the issue?  Now while the government is trying to put a stop to this, it is actually legal for your internet provider to throttle, or even completely block certain services.  If they decide that their network is being overworked by xbox live traffic, they can block it.  This is especially common in rural areas (Texas comes to mind) where they don't have a strong connection the backbone of the internet, and they have to practice extreme conservation.  I have dealt with some internet providers that come right out and say that they block xbox live traffic, and you will never be able to use it on their service.

Not trying to start a flame war or anything, but those are the facts.  It is clearly not Xbox Live that is giving you the trouble, so don't go around telling people that it is.

And again, I'm not trying to start anything.  I'm still very happy to answer any questions.

why can't we play online for free?

Why wont the Ford dealer give me a F150 for free?

Why wont the people at Wal*Mart give me a free T.V., I-Pod, PS3, case of Coors, etc.?

Why wont the folks at Guitar Center give me a B.C. Rich Warlock and a Marshall amp for free?

Why wont my I.S.P. just give broadband service for free?

WAIT! I KNOW! It's because EVERYBODY likes to make money! Hey! You knew that already, didn't you? You were just teasing me. Alright, alright, you got me. Gosh, do I feel silly now.Embarrassed [:$]

I believe the official answer is, it keeps the price of games/service down.

Your cut of the action? What did you help develop? YOU have a CHOICE; pay for the service or NOT. It doesn't get any more simple than that.

You paid Microsoft the money they were asking AFTER reading AND accepting the T.O.U. and C.O.C.. Live is a Microsoft property, not XXALAN DEXTERXX's personal online experience. You have 2 choices; 1. Pay for the service and enjoy what $50.00 a year will get you. 2. Don't pay. WAIT! I'll even give you a third choice...3. Invest billions of your own  money and start a FREE online service the rest of us can use. I say your own money because I doubt you will get any investors unless you can triple their money; and by giving away services I seriously doubt you can do that. Lmao.

Re: why can't we play online for free?
If you play four days out of three months, it is not xbox live that is in error. Live is rarely down for longer than 24 hours and those times are always further than a few months apart.. Replace your modem/router, have your outside lines tested, replace all of your inside lines and make sure you have your filters properly attached if your on dsl and if your on cable have the company test their outside filter(they can go bad with age and harsh weather).

ya it does something like that, but you have to keep in mind "i get kicked off at my house but my other xbox stays hooked up" "while the other is kicked off". and "it doesnt just happen at my house" (i get kicked off everywhere). i dont know if i can make myself anymore clear. when i get kicked off xbl i get kicked off where ever i can hook up to internet. when my xbox gets back online i can get on anywhere there is internet. stop and actually read what i write and you will see that its not my stuff thats kicking me off cause if it was i wouldnt be playing on xbl with my wifes xbox.

...Its not that Im not reading your posts, its that they make very little sense. So far the most legible one you have posted was about gutting people.
You want to take another shot at explaining your situation? First you make it sound like its only your system and only when at home, then later your explanation lends people to think it happens to you and your friends but not your wife.

This time, write it up.. take a few deep breaths,.. come back to proofread and then finally post your reply. I will attempt to aid you as long as you will remain civil.

ok lets say im at my house playing online and all of a sudden i get kicked off line so i assume that something is wrong with my internet, so i go to my buddys house and hook my xbox up there and for some reason it wont let me connect like it normally would but hes playing on his xbox so then i figure its my xbox so i tell him to bring his xbox to my house. we get to my house and he hooks his xbox up with no problem and mine still will not let me connect so now im like it is my xbox. a month goes by and im sittin at my house and i want to play a game i turn on my xbox and it connects to xbl. i get a call the next night from my buddyand he asks me if my xbox still wont connect i tell him it does. he tells me his isnt working and hes comeing over to see if its his internet. he gets to my house and his xbox wont connect, so we go to his house and i hook my xbox up to his internet and it connects to xbl. he was able to connect back 2 weeks later. a couple months down the road the same thing happens to both of us again and some other of my friends. does this seem easyer to understand?

Okay enough already, this is not an issue with Xbox LIVE. It is your personal Connection, whether it be a fault of your Router, Router Settings or ISP.

I do not ever get "kicked" off Xbox LIVE with the exceptions of;
  • No ISP Service for maintenance (which they did to me once)
  • No Xbox LIVE Service (again there it is about once a year and it effects everyone)
  • I unplug my Ethernet Cable
You need to resolve whatever problem you and your "buddy" are having first. It could be very possible since it sounds like both of you are having the same problems, both of you might have the same problems with your Set-Up.

If you would like, could you please describe the Settings on your Router? And please be very specific, do not simply state "I have ports open". Try some of the following;
  • Is your IP Address Dynamic or Static?
  • Are you using DHCP Enabled (Automatic Settings)?
  • Do you have any Services applied like UPnP or QoS?
If you need help with the Set-Up of a Router or Private/ Home Networking Equipment, just ask. It's difficult to help without someone explaining their level of understanding. If you have no idea of any of the above please aks.

Adapt and Overcome or die trying

I don't have any problems paying online, but i do get your point.

Its a good idea but there would have to be some way for the console to keep track of the hours...

But I think for paying online you a bang for your buck(online chat, multiplayer online, download certain items...etc.)
