Clearly you failed to understand the examples I had, they were fairly straightforward. Grand Theft Auto IV follows the events of an immigrant who comes to America to make money and live the good life. Although America fails to be the utopia he thought it would be he works hard with his skill set and lives the American, albeit unethical, Dream. The characters from Gears of War and it's sequel display people fighting for what they believe in. Dom's increasingly urgent search for his wife Maria is an example of this along with Marcus' search for information about his Father. Dom refuses to stray from his search and fights on until he realizes Maria's fate. In the Halo series humanity's existence looks bleak. Master Chief is like a beacon of hope to the near helpless population of Earth. Chief does what is necessary to protect the human race, a lesson in never giving up. Portal teaches problem solving skills and alternative thinking to solve the problems set in front of the player. These are important life lessons that need to be learned for success in life.

About 75% of the arcade and community games are pretty safe (just try the demo yourself first).

Wow, never really thought of it that way.

Although GTA4 is an amazing game it's almost as if Rockstar is begging for controversy (Lost and Damned, anyone) It's like they try to take big risks in the gaming buisness and for the most part it pays off.

Top games of all time:

-Fallout 3
-Resident Evil 4
-Grand Theft Auto:San Andreas
-Assassins Creed 2

beautiful katamari very colorful, and it is basically about cleaning. you roll stuff with your katamari. my 2 year old enjoys playing in the 'menu', you have to swim with your character to the different levels and there are other things in the 'menu'

Id definetly recommend the Viva Pinata games, while they are a tiny bit complex and you may need to help her a bit, the games are virtually violence free (sometimes you will have to hit a pinata with a shovel but all that happens is it breaks and candy comes out) and features a bright colorful art style and very bright themes.

I recommend this to any parents looking for a fun "Mario style" game that is approachable for kids.

Just get it over with and let her play Gears now, you know by the time shes 13 she'll be listening to rap music doing meth and probably have a kid on the way.

If you let them play uno make sure you keep an eye on the room they are in. There have been many times on uno i have seen more of a person than i wanted to!

There are alot of abusive people even on arcade games but most of them are suitable if their settings are right ;-)

Even bomberman isnt so bad. Most gaming parents grew up with boulderdash, galaxian etc and 'it didnt do us any harm'.

Regardless of all the chatter, some people here went too far. Some games are not good to keep purity of spirit. I should know, I own over 100's of console game, play 100's more online games, and have about 30+ board games.

I am still around if there is anyone who wants to play something positive and encouraging.

Re: Non-Violent, Family Friendly Game
i can personally recommend the first viva pinata. i see its been mentioned several times but honestly its that good, it should be near the top of the pile. theres a lil fighting and theres 'mating dances' but theres nothing remotely sexual or obscene about them at all. in fact if anyone is at all offended by anything in that game their head should be examined.

i definitely agree with closely monitoring UNO games if you dont have the camera option completely disabled. after running into some pretty obscene and graphic behavior i was put off enuff that i didnt play UNO for a year. i play now but not w/ the camera, gamestop has that bad boy.

This is a message to anyone really. I put new family settings on my daughters xbox 360 and have forgotten it! I changed the settings as she kept guessing the code, so i made it extra difficult for her to guess because i was worried as she keeps playing her elder brothers violent games. But now i have blown it!
Does anyone know how i can rectify this problem? Please

Well, as stated before, the Lego games are fun and child-friendly, and also fun for all the family, so that would be a good choice. The themed ones, like Star Wars, Indeana Jones and Batman, are also handy if you wnat to try and get your child into said themes when they are older, so starting with the lego versions would help them appreiciate them at a young age.

It depends on what you consider "violent".  Ok COD classifies.  But so does any of the Lego series as you are bashing and smacking things to break/kill them.  Same with King Fu Panda.  Hello, Kung Fo...martial arts.  Granted these are pretty fringe as far as being classified as violent.  They still are, to some degree.  I am not an anti-violence freak, I am just offering suggestions to the OP for the non-violent request.

Some examples of ones I consider non-violent:
A Kingdom for Kelflings
Disney Sing It
The Orange Box - Portal (Portal ONLY)
Carcassonne
Gel
Word Puzzle
Peggle

Some with very minor and kid rated violence:
The Maw (Monster eating things but its cute and friendly looking)
Feeding Frenzy (Fish eating things)
Night at the Museum 2 (Very minor volence)
Open Season (Scaring hunters, cartoon type minor violence)
Lego* (any of the Lego series like Lego Indiana Jones, Lego Star Wars)(bashing lego things and lego people/monsters)
Not really violent but have lyric issues:
Lips
Rock Band (all)
Guitar Hero (all)
Dance Dance Revo
Any of the keroke type games (lyirics)

XBLA is probably the best area to find non-violent and family friendly games

In the Movies is a good one as well, as well as any of the Lego and Banjo Kazooie Games

While I understand where your coming from, you don't have to say "minor kid related violance." Kids are not babies. It's like thoese modern kids movies that have "Contains very mild peril." What does it matter? So long as it's not gorery, a small bit of vioalnce is not gonna *** your kid over.

I just knew someone was going to go here.

As I said in my post, +I+ am not a strict anti-violence person.  I do control the violence level of what my girls see but I am not over-the-top strict with it.  I let them watch Tom & Jerry, they have played Oblivion, and they have played Fable 2.  They won't be playing Fear2, CODx, or GOW2, those are over the top for their ages.

My point was that I didn't know the violence threshhold the OP considers a game to be "violent" and to that end I listed ones that could be considered non-violent in the strictest sense and noted which ones were close and what types of violence they contain.  You have to consider the context in which the question is being asked.  If you are standing in the middle of a Mennonite community, I am absolutely sure that what is considered violent would be significantly different than what would be considered violent if you are in the front row of a AC/DC concert.  Since I didn't know the context of the OP, I offered game examples with the violence they exhibit.  With that information, the OP(and others scanning this thread) could make their choice as to the level they wished to allow for THEIR kids.

We each have a threshold for the violence level we allow for our kids.  Having information about what types of violence a game contains is GOOD.  If you think it is unimportant, fine, but others consider it useful.  How you use the information is completely your business and I will defend your right to ignore the information but please don't put down the information itself as having no value to anyone, thats simply not the case.

As for the "Contains very mild peril." notation (and others), sure, it means nothing to you (and I ignore it as well) but there are others out there that consider it important.  That is their choice, that is your choice and that is my choice.

I understand, but it's just I grew up in the 90s before all this PC nonsense and there was so much in kids stuff that is not allowed nowadays becasue perants complain about the smallest of things.

And therein lies the distinction.  If you tell someone that there is violence (or any other subject matter) in a game or movie and let THEM choose to consume it then it's the consumer's choice.  I completely support this premise.  On the other hand, if you tell someone they can't consume a product because it contains some subject matter, then this is is called censorship and I do NOT support this, at least to a point.  The hard thing is where is the line.

Clearly, hard core porn should not be able to be viewed by minors.  Seeing a game character in their underwear (Oblivion for example, when you are changing armor sets) is a different matter and is clearly in the gray zone of PC.  Some parents will allow it, others consider it over the line. THEIR LINE, not MY LINE.   IMHO, in these gray zones, let the consumer decide, not the government or industry.

Give the comsumer the information so they can make an informed decision and then (here is the important part) let THEM decide.
