If it is not the disc causing the issues, why does my new exchanged copy of NHL 08 from Best Buy work perfectly on the same console that was giving me errors before?

Because there is a 4,000 post thread started a couple weeks ago about this DUE - and the vast majority of us have exchanged our games *multiple* times (including myself: 3rd copy of NHL 08, 4th copy of PGR4) to only see the error pop up again.

It has to be the software-hardware relationship. If I play another game for a while and then put in NHL 08 or PGR4, I will not have a problem.

But if I simply load up one of those two games at startup and have a go, a DUE will occur within 4 minutes of play *every* time.

Re: Disk is unreadable

And it's too fishy for multiple gaming companies all-of-a sudden producing "faulty" discs within the same month. If it was just EA...I might think it was a problem on their end.

NHL 08 is the only disc that has ever given me any problems.... and the one I have now is working fine.  Guess I'll just enjoy it and not worry about it.

Re: Disk is unreadable

According to EA the problem is caused by a software update that Microsoft released after the game went into production.

Anyway.... it has been officially confirmed that they are working on a patch for the game to solve the issue. And not only this particular issue, but all issues that have been reported with the game (they will probably miss some anyway).

Re: Disk is unreadable

Sorry, that should be all the ONLINE issues. The unreadable disc is likely related to the online issues though.

Re: Disk is unreadable

I'm just guessing here but the only time I got the unreadable disc on most of my games was right before my 360 died, I had mine from launch though. I see you just got it at Xmas? If I was you I would exchange it, my friend got a dud right before xmas and he exchanged it and his new one is fine.

I get disc unreadable but I know for sure it is just my console. The DVD drive has issues. I thought it was the disc too as I think NHL is the only one that gives me the error. But I had a temporary xbox when mine went in for repairs and it worked great. Now I got my "repaired" console back and it gives me the errors still.

BEFORE YOU SEND IN YOUR XBOX, try to unplug everything, put the xbox in the upright position, and plug everthing back in. If you have one of those fans in the back, get rid of it, it only make the connection worse. Wireless connections, such as with live, are fine. If the game doesn't work, turn the xbox off, take off any memory sources, and try again. If it works, then you should try cleaning up your hard drive. If not, send it in. :)

Re: Disk is unreadable
So far I have heard its the Cache, I have heard its thick discs, I have heard its Microsofts fault, I have heard its EA's fault, I have heard its the disc, and I have heard its the machine. I have heard that its only NHL 08 and people saying its most of their games. I have heard its all new games cause the machine cant handle it.

Personnaly, I am gonna go with this being a disc problem. NHL 08 is the only game I have that doesnt work. It has gotten circular scratches on it. It is the only game that has gotten these scratches. I am not an Xbox tech so I am not famililar with how the games are handled once inside the machine, but I know that NO other game has been scratched by the machine and games like Forza have seen ALOT of hours inside the box.

In the beginning the game worked fine.. awesome, no problems. Then the circular scratches appeared and now its unreadable, but sometimes I dont even get into a game, and sometimes I get two or three in before it conks. Nothing really makes alot of sense.

I was just telling a buddy the other day that the problems with the Xbox 360 are better now and machines are not having nearly as many problems as they did in the beginning. Now I have to tell him to avoid Xbox because it doesnt seem to matter what the circumstance is, they have problems.

This game is so much fun and its being ruined by shotty design on either EA's side or Microsofts side. I dont really care whos fault it is as long as both sides figure out what went wrong and work together to fix it. We as consumers spend alot of money on games and machines. About 18 billion dollars last year alone if memory serves. All we want is for this stuff to work. Dont sell it if it doesnt work. We deserve better.

Re: Disk is unreadable
So, I'm also having problems with my NHL 08.

Since day one I've gotten random freezes or disc is unreadable.

Ive gotten the scratches that the console is causing.

I have never went LIVE with my 360 so I have never had any updates or patches downloaded/installed.

XBOX phone tech support only offered to repair my console for 100$ if I thought the console was causing the problem.

How hard is it to exchange the disc at a retailer like GameStop, Circuit City, or Best Buy? Considering Ive had the game for a few months now and ordered from EA sports.com.

Re: Disk is unreadable
I took my disc to a place here in my city that resurfaces them. When I got it back it looked brand spankin' new. I was skeptical that this would work however, having read all the different comments people were making about their specific experiences. When I got home, I threw it in and I can say that its been days and many games later and it has not froze or given me the disc unreadable error. I have checked the disc each time I am done playing and it has not been scratched again yet.

This process cost me $4. Its cheap enough to give it a try. The one thing that I have made sure not to do since I got it back is leave it in the machine. I remove it each and every time I am done playing and I exit the game by going to the dashboard and then removing the disc. I dont know if any of that is nesassary, but its working, so I will keep doing the routine.

Re: Disk is unreadable

It happens to me all the time on ALL my games. Theres no time limit to when it happens but if I play for an hour or so, sure enough, i`ll get the disk unreadable message. Very annoying if your game hasn`t saved! I`m sending my console in because its acually stratching my games too. I`ll get a brand new game, play it for a while, hear the drive making funny noises, get the error message, take out the disk and theres little scratches on it!! Not happy at all. This is my second console too as the first one I had got the 3 red lights of death.

THIS ISN`T GOOD ENOUGH MICROSOFT!!!!!

Canadaman its a system/memory issue, nothing to do with the game.  Ive played about 60, 10min games and got the error twice.  I also got the error tonight on PGR4 so it just shows its not an NHL 08 problem.

Wow STFU already. Maybe it's an issue with YOUR console but most people's consoles work fine with other games, including mine. I had my disk replaced 3 times and the the disc read error still popped up. NHL 08 is the only game that this happens.

its the console, i got the infamous ring of death a few months back. every time i would turn my console on i would get a disc error the first game i played so i always played an unranked match first to warm up and get it out of the way. after i sent the console in i haven't gotten one since.

Re: Disk is unreadable

The problem is caused by an update to the system that Microsoft has done. Lots of different games have this problem. Clear your cache and don't download any updates for the console when asked. Some of us gets the game to work perfectly by letting the console start up to the dashboard before we start the game instead (either by turning off autostart, start the console without the game disc in it or by starting it by opening the DVD drive and let it start up to the dashboard).
