Re: Connecting External Hard Drive into the USB?

First off why are people still asking what video formats the 360 will play?

THE 360 WILL ONLY PLAY ONE TYPE OF VIDEO FILE!!!

Next, to the guy whos external HD wont work,  try the USB ports in the front,  the one on the back is for the USB WiFi adapter so posibly wont work for media..  Just a thought cant be assed to take my HD downstairs to find out.

As for a turorial to connect a external HD, sorry but do you want a tutorial on how to plg in your controler to?  Its realy so simple its untrue.  Your only making it hard cos your trying to be complicated about it.

The 360 wont work with NSD's it is running UPnP as its used in the Media Extender system.  But its just not desidned to.  It also wont work with Media Extender functions if the files are stored on a NSD rather than on the PC running MCE or Media Player 11. So you best bet is to run a Media Server.  Then you can stream your media to whatever device you want :)  Currently my Media Server is streaming to the 360, 2 other PC's in the house and my PSP :)

Saves a fortune on storage space...

Re: Connecting External Hard Drive into the USB?

With the greatest respect Turtle, why would I want to make something difficult for myself?
I've formatted a 320gb drive to FAT32 with Partition Magic to its max size (196gb), I then added a couple folders of mp3s to the drive and also some to the root of the drive. Connect to FRONT USB of 360 and power on, go to Music menu and "portable device" option is still grayed out!!!
If anyone can see anything wrong with what I've done in the above paragraph PLEASE let me know, I've contacted Xbox Support about this issue and they are supposed to be gettin back to me. I ain't hold my breath! Any tips would be appreciated, thanks.

I had mine plugged into the back of the 360. It's not there anymore because I just stream over my network

Ok..Did you make your external hdd a shared drive?  I do not know if this matters, but I have one of the flash drives and boy.  It works.  Now it opens doors for things to come in the future at least for myself.

Datel X SATA allows you to save data including demos, saved games, etc, etc, from your 360 to a PC computer.

I bought a 500gb Western Digital MyBook and didnt know about the Fat32 business. I am now taking my content off and am going to format again.

Should I just use XP to format it to FAT32?

Alright so WD had software to format, and I threw content back on. All of the videos are in AVI at the moment, but is it possible to recognize folders? or do all the files have to be in the root folder?

Re: Connecting External Hard Drive into the USB?
Ok heres the deal!!!

If you want to get an external Hard Drive connected via a usb enclosure, you have to partition it in windows FIRST. then use the usbextreme program to make it FAT32, once you do it this way, you will be able to see your drive.. I just did it with a 300 gig Seagate. IT WILL ONLY show up with wmv files NO mpg or others. MAKE Sure if you try to variate from this method that it is not a LOGICAL partition, but a PRIMARY partition.

and for all you people that keep asking the same damn question over and over about reading other formats of video, get a life please, it was hard enough finding out how to do this without having to read your useless posts of requesting how to do something that isnt supported

The 360 will not see AVIs, only WMV.  At the monent folder view is not supported.  So everything shows up as one large folder reguardless for videos.  The spring update will fix that finally.

Was anyone able to find a work around for this?

Thanks.

Re: Connecting External Hard Drive into the USB?
Microsoft would be cutting it's own hand off if it doesn't recognize the  revenue potential of making a software update for transfering media content to an external source. While I realize they are concerned with copyright infringement and filesharing, they can't expect to settle with offering a larger HDD that is overpriced and limited in use. For the same money of the new 120HDD you can get a 250 and even 320HDD externals.

By limiting the ability to transfer files they have an imbedded limit on how much media a customer can download from the marketplace and therefore limiting their own profit potential. Selling digital media (that technically doesn't exist in a tangible sense) versus developing, producing, manufacturing, shipping, and servicing hardware is a massive diference in cost and profit.

This is truely a quandry that must keep Gates up at night shredding his sheets. The choice of making even more money versus having sole ownership and control of something.

Re: Connecting External Hard Drive into the USB?

If you can't move stuff from the 360 to an external device can someone explain this info I found on xbox.com?

How To

Copy and Delete Items from Your Hard Drive

You can copy items on your hard drive to a memory unit, connected PC, or a connected USB device. You can also free space on your hard drive by deleting items.

To copy or move an item from your hard drive to a connected device:

  1. With the hard drive attached to the Xbox 360 console, turn the console on.
  2. Go to the System area of the Xbox Dashboard and select Memory.
  3. Select your hard drive.
  4. Select the category of the item you want to copy or move.
    • To copy or move videos, trailers, and demos, select either Videos and Trailers or Demos, then select the item.
    • To copy or move gamer profiles, gamer pictures, and themes, select either Gamer Profiles, Gamer Pictures, or Themes, select the owner of the item, then select the item.
    • To copy or move all content associated with a game, selectGames, select the owner of the content, choose the game, select Game Options (Y), then select the item.
    • To copy or move just one item for a game (such as a single saved game), select Games, select the owner of the content, select the game, then select the item.
  5. Select Copy or Move.

    Note

Gamer profiles can only be moved or deleted, not copied. Certain items, like music files, cannot be copied or moved, only deleted.

  6. Select the connected device to which you want to copy or move your item.

Not according to what I posted...read the BOLD.  "...a connected USB device."  The MU is not USB and is listed separately before that.

Re: Connecting External Hard Drive into the USB?

I found the link but it is still obvious you can not.  Either that information has changed or it only applies to music.  I have tried with video and the 360 does not see another hard drive to move content to.   I have not tried with music yet.

Yeah, I tried it tonight with a 1GB flash drive formatted as FAT32 and the 360 didn't recognize it.  So I guess that information is, unfortunately, outdated or inaccurate.

If I plug my SanDisk ImageMate   any media  like pics or movies and music (as long as they are in the right format) show up no problem.

I know how u feel, although I havent spent out on an external drive yet(and thanks to the info on this forum I wont be yet ) but i've been streaming 720p HD wmv movies from my pc and the quality is amazing but most are about 7gb and I was really considering an EX-HD as my pc hard drive is running low and would be nice to not have the pc on to watch them, so an EX-HD is kind of pointless for me until it supports NTFS :-(, does anyone know if the 360 is likely to support NTFS any time in the future?

Re: Connecting External Hard Drive into the USB?
I'm not buying that lame excuse.  My DVR allows me to attach an external hard drive for video storage.  It does this by formatting the entire HD in special format and then encrypts everything on it.  This way I cannot attach it to a PC and cannot read any of the data.  Is it full-proof?  Of course not, no encryption system is ever full-proof, but it does thwart the majority of tampering.  There is no reason why MS could not do the exact same thing.

Re: Connecting External Hard Drive into the USB?

You can format an old iPod, which works great. (Delete ipod control folder if it's there, then it will show up under video)

then there are some good 1080p clips here:

Am I right?.
yes in some ways you are correct.u cant upload the files directly from from ur 360 to the external drive. there is another way to get the files u want on the drive though. u can use xsata on ur stock drive.if u dont  know what im getting at yet well im not going to ge into extensive details just google xsata and you'll see where to buy it or u can buy the cables and make the rig like i did

Re: Connecting External Hard Drive into the USB?
To the best of my knowledge there aren't any drivers that support NAS on xbox 360.  You would be better off to purchase a dedicated external USB hard drive for the xbox 360.  I have an external 2.5" USB hard drive enclosure that pulls power from the USB connection (no additional AC adapter) permanently attached to my Xbox 360 specifically for media.  The trick is buying a compatible external drive that the xbox recognizes.  FYI - external/portable storage devices may or may not show up on the System - Memory blade.  Once you have a working device simply copy your media on the hard drive using a computer.  This method has worked well for Mp3s organized by file folder and name instead of the sloppy Microsoft media library style of organization.  Shows up as a Portable Device on the media source page after selecting the type of media to play.  I hope this helps.

Re: Connecting External Hard Drive into the USB?

Ok i found out if you have an iPod converter (Videora,Quicktime) your in luck. I have been using my external hard drive with a .WMV converter (it sucked) and one day while just messing around looking through my drive i opened my converted iPod videos and Walla they played after i downloaded the supported Codec. All i did was clicked the .mp4 (iPod Videos) and it asked me to download a file that would play it and moments later i was sitting back watching my movies.
