I. Introduction

Geometry Wars has to be one of the best games that an arcade junkie, such as myself, could ever get his or her hands on. From day one, I have played this game at least five times a week, and, sometimes, I have even dedicated my entire gaming time to strictly playing this amazing title. Well, now, after almost four months of playing this title, I've finally had the realization that, even though it is somewhat of a simple game, there are many questions that must be answered. Although I cannot up your score simply through text, I hope that this thread can answer most of your questions, help you attain every achievement through videos and strategies, and put you on the road to playing like the Ultimate Warriors of Geometry.

II. Game Variations

There are two different games in Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved for the Xbox Live Arcade: Geometry Wars: Retro and Geometry Wars: Evolved. While Geometry Wars: Retro is a blast into the past with a 1980's arcade feel to it, Geometry Wars: Evolved is much more modern, with spectacular graphics and more intense scenarios. While both games offer a great amount of gameplay, Evolved seems to not be as repetitive as its predecessor. Geometry Wars: Evolved also offers a nice, techno-style looping soundtrack, while you need some sort of music on your Xbox 360 or computer to play the music-lacking Retro version of the game. Either way, both games offer hours upon hours of fun to gamers of many different preferences.

V. Enemies

There are many new enemies in Geometry Wars: Evolved, but we also see many familiar enemies in both games.

Purple Pinwheel
Evolved Base Point Value:
25 points
Spawns: Random
Description: The pinwheel is the first enemy which will appear when you fire up your copy of Geometry Wars: Evolved. Not only is it barely attracted to the player, but it moves slowly and is very easy to destroy. Keep on the watch, though, because it will cut straight through you if you get in its path.

Cyan Diamond
Evolved Base Point Value:
50 Points
Retro Point Value: 45 Points
Spawns: Random, Circular, and Corners
Description: The cyan diamonds are the second enemies which you will encounter in Geometry Wars: Evolved, and they are the first enemies which you will encounter in Geometry Wars: Retro. Although they are slow, they are attracted to the player, and, if they form a pack, they might gain enough momentum to catch up with you. They also spawn randomly in the middle of the map, in corners, but the most dangerous spawn is when they spawn in a circular pattern around your ship. Be sure to blast these guys away before they run into or overwhelm you.

Green Square
Evolved Base Point Value:
100 Points
Retro Point Value: 175 Points
Spawns: Random, Circular, and Corners
Description: The green squares also appear in the beginning of the game, but they are much quicker and will hunt you down if you are not careful. They will run from your shots, though, but they will also lunge into you if they get close enough. While facing Green Squares alone may be a simple task, mix in some other enemies and you will have quite a challenge to overcome.

Pink Motherships
Evolved Base Point Value:
100 Points
Retro Point Value: 65 Points
Spawns: Random, Circular, and Corners
Description: Not only do these ships chase you much even quicker than the green squares and cyan diamonds, but they also release two or three other enemies when they are destroyed. Later in the game, when they are coming out of the corners, it is wise to use a bomb after you have attained all of the points you can before you are overwhelmed by smaller pink ships. Be sure to shoot at the Motherships for an extra moment to destroy the smaller ships that spawn.

Small Pink Ships
Evolved Base Point Value:
50
Retro Point Value: 125
Spawns: Out of the Mother's Belly
Description: These small ships home in on the player in a circular motion, and, if you are not quick to kill them, they may join together to create a very unique shape which is very difficult to destroy if it develops to well. Also, because they are hard to see, you must always look closely to make sure that you are not running straight into a circular trap.

Black Holes
Evolved Base Point Value:
150+ Points (1500 max)
Retro Point Value: 75 Points/Hit, 175 Points/Destroy
Spawns: Random
Description: These enemies are somewhat harmless if they are not activated (they can still kill you if you run into them), but, if you hit one with your weapon, it will turn into a black hole which slowly pulls in everything on the board. On Evolved, the more enemies it has inside, the more points it is worth. On Retro, you actually get 75 points every time that you hit it and 150 points when you destroy it. Be wary of its powers, though, because if it spawns in the right place and your shot hits it, it will pull in enough enemies to explode and create an even more deadly enemy. The Black Holes are most deadly when they are surrounded by other enemies and activated.

Black Hole Missiles
Evolved Base Point Value:
50 Points
Retro Point Value: 100 points
Spawns: Out of the Black Hole
Description: Not only are these enemies extremely fast, but they are also very maneuverable. If they get too close while you are in an intense battle, it is best to activate a bomb instead of risking a life. They are more attracted to other, activated Black Holes than to the player, but they will continue to spawn more missiles by flying into black holes until the player is overwhelmed by these extremely fast enemies. Destroy them As Soon As Possible!

Sidewinder Snakes
Evolved Base Point Value:
150 Points
Spawns: Circular and Corners
Description: These enemies are extremely deadly, extemely long, and extremely slow. Not only do they take up a massive amount of space, but they are unpredictible and can only be killed by shooting them in their heads. Due to a glitch in the game, they will kill you automatically if you are too close to them when they spawn. Also, if you do not kill them quick enough, they will gather around each other and protect one another with their tails. Although it is best to keep moving in Geometry Wars: Evolved, these enemies may require that you stay still and shoot them at a distance before the next wave appears.

Red Kamikaze Clones
Evolved Base Point Value:
150 Points
Spawns: Random and Corners
Description: These enemies are exact clones of your ship, but, thankfully, they are not capable of shooting you. Instead, they will wait for the right opportunity and charge right into you, which earns them the name Kamikaze. They also have shields that protect them from your fire, at a distance. If you are patient enough, you can shoot a Kamikaze Clone while it has its side or back to you, or you can simply run into it, guns blazing, and take it out while its shield is down. These enemies are extremely deadly, and you probably will find yourself using bombs against them very frequently.

Jacks
Evolved Base Point Value:
10 Points
Spawns: Corners
Description: These enemies are very small and not very deadly on their own, but, in Geometry Wars: Evolved, hundreds of them will spawn all around you, making it very difficult to survive. The best way to survive a wave of these enemies is to continue in your circular motion around the board and shoot paths through them as you fly around. If you start to have trouble with later spawns, where other enemies spawn with the Jacks, you will find a bomb is very useful. Remember, if you can survive a wave of Jacks, you can destroy hundreds of them, bringing you that much closer to the Multitastic achievement.

VII. Tips & Tricks

Although, as I stated in the beginning of this FAQ, I cannot up your score from its current position to Top Ten status through text, there are many Tips & Tricks that I have learned through my past four months on these forums that may help you complete this amazing Xbox Live Arcade Title.

Geometry Wars: Evolved Strategies

Movement: It is necessary that you keep all of your movements consistent with one another. After a while of moving in one directions, you may become confused and/or lost if you suddenly switch directions; therefore, it is very wise to think of the board as a clockwork or a racetrack: race around the outer rims of the board, never making a right-hand turn (or left, depending on your preferences). See what works for you: a counter-clockwise pattern around the board or a clockwise pattern around the board. Personally, I always travel in a counter-clockwise pattern around the board, as do many of the top ranking players.

Don't Be a Hero: Never race towards a huge swarm of enemies when you know that you may die as a result. Try to have more bombs than you do lives (unless you max out), as it is very wise to use a bomb than to use a life.

Stay Alive: The longer you live for, and the more enemies that you kill, the easier it is for you to earn higher multipliers and score bigger faster. The higher your multiplier is, the easier it is for you to gain more lives and bombs.

Keep Your Distance: Remember, you will die if you make contact with an enemy (except for the few seconds of invulnerability at the beginning of your life); therefore, you need to stay as far away from the enemies as you can. You may want to stay in a relative position for a few moments when fighting off a swarm of Sidewinder Snakes. Also, when assaulting a black hole, be sure to stay far enough away so you can shoot it, but it will not pull you into its grasps.

Use Your Bombs: As I stated before, it is very wise to lose a bomb before you lose a life. You will find yourself in many situations later in the game where you are simply overwhelmed by Jacks, Kamikazes, and Pink Ships, but keep in mind that a bomb will take the pressure off of you just long enough to destroy the rest of the wave.

Stay Off the Wall: Because of a glitch with Sidewinder Snakes and circular spawns that will be triggered if you are too close to the wall for too long, it is very wise that you stay a few inches away from the wall at all times. Try not to go into the middle too far, but be sure to stay away from the walls and corners. You will find your perfect route on Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved through the process of trial and error.

Fight Back! : This is a strategy for more advanced Geometry Warfighters: When you are trying to kill a Kamikaze Clone, try to run directly into it. If you focus your shots at just the right angel, you should be able to get past its shield and destroy it right before impact. It is more of an empowerment strategy for your character: If they are chasing you, then why don't you chase them?

Geometry Wars: Retro Strategies

Stack the Deck: If you have enough free time, you might find yourself in the top 10 very quickly on this game. It is a very simple strategy: stack either lives or bombs so that you have an almost limitless supply of bombs or lives. Because there is no sensible limit to how many bombs or lives you can have in Geometry Wars: Retro, you might even find yourself scoring the next high score off of a bomb stack instead of a life stack; in fact, my highest score was the result of having 30 bombs at my disposal at any given time.

Take Out the Pink: The most dangerous enemies in Retro have to be the Pink Motherships. They are fast, deploy additional enemies, and spawn in numerous places. If you can keep the pink ones off of your tail, you might find that it is very easy to allude the rest of the crowd.

Hug the Wall: Please do not take this strategy to Geometry Wars: Evolved. In Retro, it is very wise to hug the wall to keep from being attacked from all four sides. Remember to keep off of the wall for most of the game, but, if you must, you can hug the wall for extended periods of time before the circular spawns begin to appear. Remember to go around the board in a circular motion as well.

Scare the Greens: Although they are very numerous and fast, the green enemies are easy to scare and send to the other side of the board. Just fire a few shots behind you while you are on your trip around the board to keep them off of your back.

Geometry Wars Tip:
  • Watch the videos! - On the bottom of this post, you will find many videos from the gamers who have seen or hold the top spots on the leaderboards. Watching their videos is the best way to learn how to be a Geometry Wars Champion.

Please note that this is a completely original FAQ. Information was gathered from multiple sites (linked above), but I spent a massive amount of my free time over the past few days to write this FAQ. So, please, do not redistribute it in any way.

What is featured in the trial version of the game?
The trial version of Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved includes a 4-minute long demo of Geometry Wars: Evolved and leaderboards. If you wish to play Geometry Wars: Evolved for as long as you can survive, play the Retro version of the game, earn achievements to go towards your gamerscore, or rank on the leaderboards, you must buy the full game.

I already own Project Gotham Racing 3. How do I access Geometry Wars in-game?
Access your in-game garage and walk around it. Towards the back of the garage are two arcade machines, walk up to them and select which machine you wish to play on. Geometry Wars 1 will give you a full game of Retro, and Geometry Wars 2 will let you play a 4-minute game of Evolved. You will not attain any achievements while playing Geometry Wars (except for the Arcade Player achievement in Project Gotham Racing 3), and you will still need to download the full version of the game from the Xbox Live Arcade to attain achievements, rank on the leaderboard, and play as long as you wish.

How do I control my ship in Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved?
By default, you move your ship with the left joystick, you shoot with the right joystick, and you activate bombs with the triggers. If you wish to change your controls in Geometry Wars: Access the Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved Menu (main menu or in-game menu) and select Help and Options. From the Help and Options screen, select Controls. On the controls screen, you can toggle movement and shooting between the two joysticks, and you can toggle bomb activation between the triggers and the bumpers (top buttons on your controller). Simply change the controls to fit your preferences, but I highly recommend that you keep movement and shooting on separate joysticks.

How do I navigate the leaderboards in Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved?
To access the leaderboards on Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved: Access the Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved Menu (main menu or in-game menu) and select Leaderboards. (By default, the leaderboard for the version of Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved which you are currently playing will pop up, and, if you are in the menu, the Evolved leaderboard will pop up.) By pressing the "X" button on your controller, you can toggle between the Friends Leaderboard, World-wide Leaderboard, and the Top Ten Leaderboard. By using the "Y" button, you can toggle between the Retro and Evolved leaderboards. Also, you can use the Right and Left Bumpers (buttons on the very top of your controller) to toggle between pages of each leaderboard.

This menu music is getting really annoying! How can I change it or turn it off completely?
Although you cannot change the playlist in the game itself, you can override the game's audio by activating custom soundtracks on the Xbox 360 Guide. To do this, please refer to the second section of This Support Page. If you wish to turn your audio completely off in Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved, simply access Help & Options from the Geometry Wars Menu (Main Menu or in-game menu), select audio, and dull the audio to 0%.

When I am offline, I can only play the trial of Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved... but I own the entire game!
Although this problem is somewhat rare, you can refer to This Support Page for information on resolving your problem. If this does not help you, please call Xbox Customer Service (1-800-4MY-XBOX) for additional help in resolving this issue.

I just beat my high score for Geometry Wars, but my score did not update on the leaderboards - what can I do?

There is a glitch in the game where your new high score will not update on the leaderboards; unfortunately, there is no way to reverse this once it has occurred. This glitch is pretty rare, but it has happened to some of the top Geometry Wars players. Be sure to verify that you are connected to Xbox Live when the game ends, or your high score will definitely not update.

Is Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved available for any system other than the Xbox 360?

Yes, you can currently play Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved on a computer that runs on Windows Vista. Vista owners can play Geometry Wars on MSN Games. It has also been announced there is a mobile version of the game in production for cell phones.

C. Common Questions for Geometry Wars: Evolved:

How do I attain more lives in Geometry Wars: Evolved?
You will receive an extra life every 75,000 points that you score (extra lives at 75K, 150K, 225K, 300K, etc...)

How do I attain more bombs in Geometry Wars: Evolved, and how do bombs help me?
You will receive an extra bomb every 100,000 points that you score (extra bombs at 100,000, 200,000, 300,000, etc...). When you activate a bomb in Geometry Wars, it will clear the viewing area of all enemies. You will not receive any points if you use a bomb, even though you may destroy multiple enemies, and it is very wise to use your bomb as a last result.

What happens if I run out of bombs in Geometry Wars: Evolved?
Nothing! Your game will continue, and you will still be able to earn more bombs with every 100,000 points that you score.

What happens if I run out of lives?
Unfortunately, if you run out of lives, the game is over. Running out of lives is actually the only way to end a game of Geometry Wars: Evolved without quitting.

Is there a limit to how many bombs and lives I can have at my disposal during a game of Geometry Wars: Evolved?
Yes, you are only allowed to have nine bombs and nine lives at your disposal at any given time in a game of Geometry Wars: Evolved. Bombs and lives cap at 9 each.

What kind of power-ups are featured in Geometry Wars: Evolved?

There are two different gun power-ups in Geometry Wars: Evolved: The automatic fire and the shotgun. The automatic power-up will shoot multiple, single projectiles at a very fast rate of fire, and the shotgun power-up will shoot multiple, coupled projectiles at a relatively slower rate of fire than that of the automatic power-up. Until you receive your first power-up, you will be shooting single, coupled projectiles at a slower rate of fire than that of the power-ups.

How do I attain a new power-up in Geometry Wars: Evolved?

You can receive a new gun power-up every 10,000 points in Geometry Wars: Evolved, but, under certain circumstances, you might keep a power-up for much longer than 10,000 points.

Can I choose when I want to use a different power-up in Geometry Wars: Evolved?
No, it is the computer's choice at which (10,000 point) interval it wishes to give you a different power-up than the one which you are currently using.

How does the computer determine when it will send out the next wave and how powerful the next wave of enemies will be?
The computer determines how quickly the game will progress by how quickly and effectively you have destroyed the waves beforehand. Certain waves, such as circular waves, are very easy and quick to destroy; therefore, other, more difficult waves may be triggered by how quickly you destroy the wave before it.

What is the Multiplier and what does it do?
Multipliers in Geometry Wars: Evolved do exactly what they are named after... they multiply the base score of every enemy that you destroy. The multiplier that you attain depends on the number of enemies you kill without dying. There are 10 different multipliers, the lowest being 1x (base) and the highest being 10x. To attain a 2x multiplier, you must kill 25 enemies, and to attain a 10x multiplier, you must destroy 2,000 enemies. The higher your multiplier is, the easier it is for you to score more and gain more bombs and lives. Be careful, though, because, if you die, you will start all over again with a 1x multiplier.

I heard that there is a point in Geometry Wars: Evolved where it becomes a little easier and very repetitive. Is this true?
Yes, Geometry Wars: Evolved will become very repetitive at around 5 million points. If you are skilled enough to reach this point, then all you have to do is survive as long as you can (the game is still hard, either way, and many of the professionals with extremely high scores on this game take over 6 hours to complete a game of Geometry Wars: Evolved).

What is the Snake-Spawn Glitch that I have heard so much about?
When an enemy spawns in a circular motion around the player, it is required to allow the gamer .5 seconds to react and move away before it can kill the player's ship. Unfortunately, the sidewinder snakes will kill you automatically when they spawn. The best way to combat this glitch is to stay off of the walls (snakes and circular spawns were created to keep gamers from wall-riding).

What is the mysterious enemy that I have heard about as a result of destroying many pink motherships?
It is not an enemy whatsoever! This "special" enemy is just a result of the similar pattern that every small pink ship follows. Because all of the small pink ships spin in a circular motion, they eventually join together in the same pattern; creating a very bright pink circle of doom that is very hard to destroy.

I slow down a lot in Geometry Wars: Evolved. What is the deal?
You will usually slow down when there are almost too many particles or enemies on the screen at one time. At this point, it is time for you to use a bomb...

Is there online or cooperative play for Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved?

No, there is no co-op or online play for Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved, just leaderboards.

Are there any plans for new content on the Xbox Live Marketplace for Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved?
Unfortunately, we have no official word on whether or not we will ever see more Geometry Wars content on the Xbox Live Marketplace. Everyone is very eager for a picture pack of some sort, though.

D. Common Questions for Geometry Wars: Retro:

How do I attain more lives and bombs in Geometry Wars: Retro?
You will be awarded a new life for every 20,000 points that you attain. You will be awarded a new bomb for every 25,000 points that you attain.

What different kinds of power-ups are in the Retro version of Geometry Wars?
There are three different power-ups in Geometry Wars: Retro: Tracking, Shotgun, and Automatic. The Tracking power-up will shoot projectiles that will actually lock onto enemies, the automatic power-up will shoot projectiles at a very fast rate, and Shotgun power-ups will shoot multiple projectiles at a slower rate of fire than the automatic power-up. The basic weapon that you begin with only shoots one projectile at a relatively slow rate of fire. The amount of projectiles that each power-up shoots depends on how far you are in the game.

How many points does it take to get another power-up?
It only takes around 2,500 points for you to activate another power-up, but, like Evolved, some power-ups may not change for long periods of time.

Wow, this power-up tracks my enemies and takes them out! Why do a lot of the people on the top of the leaderboard despise using the Tracking power-up?
Later in the game, when the screen is full of enemies, the tracking power-up may not lock onto the enemy that you are trying to destroy. This may spell quick death for anyone who cannot kill other enemies in time for another, more accurate power-up. This is also one of the main reasons that tracking power-ups are not in Geometry Wars: Evolved.

I saw an image of someone with 1,000 lives and 2,500 bombs at one time. How is this possible?!

There is actually no sensible limit to how many bombs and lives you can have in Geometry Wars: Retro. In fact, some gamers can score millions upon millions because lives and bombs add up so quickly.

I have not died for 100,000 points, but I still get the same score for each enemy as when I started. What is the deal?
Unfortunately, there are no multipliers in Geometry Wars: Retro.

I also saw someone on the leaderboards with exactly 200,000,000 points. Is there cheating in Geometry Wars?!

No, the highest score on the leaderboards at this point is not the result of a malicious cheat. Because there are no multipliers in Retro, it is very easy to calculate your score just to leave your mark on the leaderboards forever.

This game seems so difficult from the start! Does it get easier?
After a while, probably around 200,000 points, a gamer can begin to stack either lives or bombs in his or her favor. Once you have a nice resource of bombs or lives, the game becomes extremely easy. As for repetition, I would have to say that Geometry Wars: Retro starts to repeat itself greatly around 1.5 million points.

I just survived and scored 250,000 points on Geometry Wars: Retro with my brand-new account! Where are my achievements?
There are no achievements in Geometry Wars: Retro. You must play Geometry Wars: Evolved on the Xbox Live Arcade to attain achievements.
