It's going to happen.  We don't really have an idea of when though.  Daryl Welsh, the Producer of Links 2004, has already confirmed that 2K Sports is working on the next Links for the XBox 360.  The development team apparently is composed of a number of the Links 2004 team members, which bodes well for the Links 2K6 (?), in my opinion.  We had a good thread going about that before the forums were reset.  I wish I'd had the foresight to save that thread before the plug got pulled.

I think I posted some information about that elsewhere.  I'll dig it up and post it here again.  Maybe we can get the discussion jump started.

Re: Links 2k6 for the 360

Here's what I posted in the original "Links 2K6(?) XBox 360" thread here:

Now that we know that 2K Sports is working on the next Links for the XBox 360, I thought it would be appropriate to dedicate a thread to its honor. At this point, I'm curious to see how long 2K Sports can continue to sit on the storied Links moniker before flashing it to the media. I wouldn't even qualify as a jack-leg marketing analyst, but I am an avid gamer. I've also followed the golf simulation/game market with a special passion since 1981, when I played PGA Golf on Mattel's Intellivision console. With that caveat aside, I'll proceed with my speculation.

2K Sports seems to be content to yield the spotlight to EA Sports, and Tiger Woods 06, for the time being. They probably realize they can't match EA's publicity and promotion blitz, so they're not going to press them to flex their muscles on a currently unknown competitor. My guess is that 2K Sports is going to quietly let TW 06 have a run of several weeks after its release, banking on the fact that the more mature XBox 360 (early adopters tend to be more mature) market is going to publicly decry its arcade excesses and in turn, their dissatisfaction with the game's ability to satisfy their simulation desires.

2K Sports will then announce Links 2K6, touting its simulation virtues: unfudged physics, and non-linear/inertially-governed interface to a simulation starved market. It will be received as a savior by a disenchanted demographic who were hoping for greater things from TW 06.

Are there holes in my theory? Sure there are... it won't wash if Tiger Woods 06 turns out to be something beyond what I project it will be. I know it's going to hold its own graphically, but I have a strong hunch that it's going to play a lot like the XBox version. That will leave the market wide open for a successful launch of Links 2K6, IMO.

Same here, as it will be a first day buy for me it if they make it. Party!!! [<:o)]

I keep thinking Tiger Woods would fill the void but it never does.  They were actually heading in the right direction as early previews for this years version talked about adding analog putting and doing away with the aftershot controls. Well they included the analog putting but kept all that other crap in. I never even rented it this year.

I would rather have Links but at least you would think Tiger Woods could have offered different Levels of gameplay to appeal to us "More Sim" video golfers.

It looks like I won't be able to afford an XBox 360 until March, but I do know that Links 2K6 will be a purchase for me, sight unseen.  Links 2004 was and is a quality game.  I think it would have matured and become more refined with a 2005 edition, but economics kept that from happening.  Knowing that the core of the Indie Games development team is behind the 2K6 360 version is all I need to hear.

The verdict will have long been in on TW 06 360 by the time I get my XBox 360, so I'll know at that point whether it's even worth a rental.  I'm hoping for a miracle in its case, although I'm not expecting one, based on that series' recent console track record.

I really want this game to come to the 360, and like soon.  Actually, just an announcement would be awesome.  I mean just to know that it IS coming, when it's coming, and maybe an overall vision of what's in store.

Off hand I can't think of any MAJOR things I'd want for the new game.  Mainly more courses, equal to greater toughness and sim like qualities, and more pro's with an awesome player creator.  I really hope that they don't get caught up in trying to do something really revolutionary and new, because the fact is that I think most people like this because it's good, fun, challenging golf.  It's just like hitting the links with friends and that's what it SHOULD be.  Oh, a couse creator would be great but for that to happen I'd think we'd be looking at an '07 to '08 release date so they could just skip that for this version.

Yep, i'll agree Links 2004 is the best golf game on the Box. TW dosen't really hold a candle to it, i've been playing Links for 3 years and still no hole in one mmmmmmmm....... But I picked up TW and nailed 3 in my first game ever played, dose that tell you anything about quality? As long as they stick with the format they used for 2004 i'm sure 2006 will be huge for us traditionalists.

Only thing I would like to see is more cosmetic options such as appearance and clothing, maybe some more equipment, better yet customizable equipment once you "EARN" it through tournament play. Even if you had to deduct from your earnings for say R&D into new equipment, maybe even some sort of sponsorship. As real as the game is i'd like to be able to have seasons, and cuts and qualifiers. Maybe start as an amature before you make it to the bigs! Kinda like the football games.

But that's just my 2 cents LOL

I think we'll see an announcement in December, maybe January.  I don't know why, but I have a hunch we won't actually see the game until the Fall, at the earliest.  I hope I'm wrong on that.

Off hand I can't think of any MAJOR things I'd want for the new game.  Mainly more courses, equal to greater toughness and sim like qualities, and more pro's with an awesome player creator.

I'm not sure what to expect as far as number of courses.  It's hard to say what's equitible when it comes to a premium golf game.  I think 8 to 10 courses would be more than reasonable.  I just hope they don't go the whimsical fantasy course route of the TW series.  Most of their fantasy courses are over-the-top junk, IMO.

I would like to see more sim-like qualities myself.  Give us the option to drop the comet trails, and cannon-shot effects.  I'd also like to see a perspective offered where you viewed the action of the other golfers from your player's position on the course.  It would make it far more immersive.  I didn't like the spinning camera perspective used to view computer players shots in Links 2004.  It felt more like you were watching a replay rather than a live shot.

Finally, they really do need a player creation utility on par with Tiger Woods Gameface.  That would add so much to this game... I think it's an essential feature!

Yeah, they just need to build on what Links 2004 started.  I hope they'll see fit to show galleries on adjacent holes, and golfers playing ahead of you and on adjacent holes.  That would add so much life to the tournament atmosphere and sell the gamer on the idea that they're participating in a larger event.

I'm not sure what they could do with a course creator in a console version.  I hate modifying existing courses, and I fear that user created courses would somehow necessitate a compromise in the game's rendering engine.

I'd like to see a multiplayer online interface that was more along the lines of Jack Nicklaus Golden Bear Challenge's "Ready Golf".  I thought Links 2004's "speed golf" (or whatever it's called) was too symbolic and impersonal.  It kind of freaked me out to watch telemetry reports of my opponents action.  I had a hard time gauging what was going on.  OTOH, the pure turn based play was too slow and cumbersome.  I think Ready Golf (where each player aligns and hits their shots simultaneously, and then watches their opponents shot in a virtual instant replay) is a great compromise between the two.

With the course creator couldn't they make it a 2nd disc or even a seperate purchase or something.  If it was a seperate purchase than it wouldn't be wasted on the people who would never use it and they could even do something where you'd have to have the course creator in order to play on created courses.  That would at least encourage more people to buy it.  It's just that I think it's really taken off for the pc and there are people who really devote a lot of time into making great courses and I think that would be really good for the xbox 360 community and the success of the live marketplace.

Picture this, I boot up my course creator and spend X amount of days or weeks creating an awesome course.  I then upload it to the live marketplace.  Now, gamers come along and see this course with a free picture or video or even description for them to view.  They want it, so they agree to using X amount of live marketplace points to purchase it.  I go back onto live and see that a small portion of their purchase price has been added to my total available marketplace points.

This is speculation on my part, but here's my theory on this... The course creation software that Indie Games uses is probably pretty esoteric in design.  It's not something an end-user could sit down with, read an 80 page tutorial, and take off with it.  Furthermore, it would also require, at the very least, an XBox 360 development kit, to create a course on the scale and magnitude of what you'll see shipped with the game.  Finally, I think it would be cost prohibitive for Indie Games to produce an end-user course creation utility, capable of producing courses of the quality that are produced in-house.

I'm probably being a bit cynical in my analysis of this.  It will be interesting to see how this takes off once Links 2K6 arrives on the scene.  Maybe it's not as impossible as I think.  I do know that my brief experience with the Tiger Woods 2003 and 2004 Course architect showed me that it takes a lot of effort to produce something worthwhile, and I think that architect made some compromises to make it easier for the end-user to use.  In my opinion, Links 2K6 will be significantly more complex than TW 2003/04, in this sense.

I also will backup that Daryl has said they are working on the next Links. He stated in an email to me that he has seen some of the new Links game and from what he has seen it will be well worth the wait. He also told me that Links was on a lower priority then the new Topspin and Amped games, 2k games was working on these two games to get them finished for the launch of the 360. When those two games were done they would continue on the next Links.

I have asked Daryl to stop in and say hi from time to time but he said he is extremely busy with the Xbox360 right now but he would try to stop in the forums.

I still play Links04 from time to time, it's one of those games you can play over and over and not get tired of. Lets hope they were pretty close to completion of the new Links before they put it on hold.

I wonder... was Topspin a bigger ticket item than Links 2004 on the XBox?  I'm just curious as to why it got priority over Links in the development pecking order.

I have asked Daryl to stop in and say hi from time to time but he said he is extremely busy with the Xbox360 right now but he would try to stop in the forums.

Excellent, I'm sure he will have a perspective that we won't be able to get elsewhere... well, up to the point of what he can disclose.

I still play because I haven't whipped the Career mode in Advanced ability with my 24 point skill capped player yet!  There's enough challenge there to keep me coming back for more.  I also meet a couple of friends online for a little head to head, every once in a while.  I never dreamed this game would have the kind of staying power it's had with me.  I was a bit bothered by what I call "velcro" physics at first, but I got used to it.  For the most part, the physics are consistent and reasonably believable.

Yeah I didn't have my internet for a little while and when I got it back most of the folks I used to play against online were playing other games or just not online when I was. I work alot lately and can't get online line like I used to.

Yeah I will have to send Daryl another email and ask him to stop in or see if he can have one of his old devs stop by and give us a little update on where their at with the game.

Hi Tom,

We haven't announced any future plans for the Links series at this time.

Sorry,

NO SH!T SHURLOCK! Thats why I am asking.

Here is his email address, we should keep asking about it untill we get some sort of an answer. This isn't good enough, they need to make some sort of an announcement to let us know whats going on.
