Re: Busted Disc Drive Club

Count me in.

1. Console started to make a grinding noise.

2. Game still worked, grinding noise continued.

3. Grinding noise continued games no longer work (Unreadable Disc).

I opened another thread on this issue. You can view it here.

you mentioned in that thread that you fell 5 months out of warranty, right?  that must have been before they extended the warranty to three years...  anyways, i hope they do a special on the Xbox 360 and your letter!!!

Mine has just died a death an hour ago, whirring noise, unable to read the disc and the tray will not shut. I only bought it last december and only use it a couple of hours every other day. I am very concerned regarding these breakdowns as they seem very common and regret buying the damn thing. Is the PS3 more reliable I ask?

I too have had the disk drive fail on me and i got the 3 red rings of death.  I sent it in to MS and they sent me a brand new one.  Haven't had any problems with the new one so i'm happy.

I had both my 360 and Ps3 fail personally. My 360 lasted a year and a half and the ps3 had all its usb ports fail after 3 months which by the way are required to update the firmware (stupid sony) . So I cant really say its more reliable. Truthfully the most durable system with an optical drive I have ever owned was my GameCube. The main lession with is buy the extended warranty from MS overall its the best one I have seen and its only 50 bucks.

If you can't say something nice say something vague.

Yup, my first 360 broke and about three weeks after calling I'm still waiting for my coffin.

So I got a good deal off of ebay for a core system refurbished and 5 days later, disc drive won't play any games.

I am now a member of many clubs including the "Owning two broken 360 club".

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club
yep, my xbox360 unit freezes with certain games...thought it was a heat issue and got the Intec Glo Stand and have my unit horizontal while having the fan stand opposite of the hdd.  I still get the unreadable disc error with certain games and like others, the drive refused to close a couple of times.  Since I got my unit back in march 2006, I'm just going to go to ebgames/gamestop, get the core console with gamestop's extended warranty and use the accessories that came with my original pro unit and put in my hdd.  This way if there is another problem, I can just merely do an exchange with gamestop and get another unit without having to deal with Microshaft and/or waiting at least a month to get a refurbished one back!

I had the unreadable disc problem I'm just wondering if my experience of having problems with 720p and having no problems with 1080i might help some of you with what I believe is a heat issue and I have the 360 standing up.

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club
Well sometimes in Gears when a sequence starts itll freeze and got to the main Xbox menu and say disk is dirty or something. It did that with Overlord when it auto-saves. I cleared my cache and deleted some stuff off my HDD and its kinda better. Is this a sign of my drive crapping out or is it some HDD issue? Everything is fine untill it needs to save or load something big.

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club

New member to the dead disc drive club.  I've had two die to constant freezing, now number three dies to this.

I keep getting the white screen saying "to play this disc, put it an Xbox 360 console".  What kind of message is that?  Of course it's in an Xbox 360, now play the damn disc!

The first two I was able to deal with Best Buy, but this time I had to deal with Microsoft.  Dealing with MS tech support to send me a 360 coffin was a headache.  The guy I was talking to barely spoke English and I could hear several voices in the background, making it very difficult to understand anything.  The guy had to repeat everything at least four times and even then it was still muffled.

I think there's a prepaid box being sent to my house, but I'm not sure.  How long does it normally take people to receive it?

I got the same error message about "put it in an Xbox 360 console". It's a white screen with black lettering. When I brought it up to the MS customer support rep she responded, "Wow. This is the 3rd time I've heard about this message today, it seems to be happening more often....".

My XBOX is on its way back from the Texas repiar shop as I type and my BBB complaint was just sent to MS. We shouldn't have to pay for a hardware failure that should be covered just like the 3 flashing red lights.

3-Days to get the box from UPS

3-Days to ship it to MS Repair Center (Texas)

3- Days to FIX

3-Days to send back (on it's way)

Two weeks (give or take) total.

Cheers.

Mine has gone. it just wont stay shut after I turned it on one day. Heaven forbid, I do anything serious. Just turned the git on.

Microsoft want me to pay £80 as its out of warranty. I dont want a PS3 but if it had games out, I would buy one tomorrow as this is my 3rd 360 now which is apalling. What do we put up with this? They claim its 5% error - all my friends are out at least their second 360. Microsoft - you are tnot being up front about all this.

I'm now on my seventh 360 and have no end of bother trying to sort out my woes with MS. My last machine had the disk tray problem which resulted in my two latest purchases (FORZA + SHADOWRUN) being scratched which MS accept no responsibility for! I was more or less accused of being a liar when i phoned SUPPORT (only had to wait 15 mins to speak to someone / is this a new record???) to complain. The 360 sits in a well ventilated area and was NEVER moved while powered up with a disc in the drive, but support insists i must have moved it as this is the only way discs can be scratched. I DISAGREE!!!

I HAVE NOW HAD ENOUGH OF THE FARCE THAT IS THE XBOX360, I'M SELLING UP AND MOVING ON. I REALLY ENJOYED MY TIME WITH THE 360 ON THE ODD OCCASION THAT I HAD A WORKING ONE, BUT WITH ALL THE FAILURES AND HOPELESS SUPPORT THE STEPS THAT MICROSOFT ARE NOW TAKING TO REMEDY THEIR PROBLEMS ARE FAR TOO LITTLE TOO LATE FOR ME. IN A YEAR OR SO HOPEFULLY MICROSOFT WILL HAVE FINALLY IRONED OUT ALL THE PROBLEMS AND I MAY CONSIDER ANOTHER 360 IF SONY STILL HAVEN'T CAUGHT UP (PSN doesn't come close to LIVE and game releases are still lacking)

BYE BYE FOR NOW MICROSOFT (please get it together soon)

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club

My second box died just outside of the 90 day warranty they give you with a repair. The firts one died from lights. This one has had a drive failure and the want 99 dollars to fix it. Everyone on this thread needs to report to the BBB because this is a serious problem and causing us consumers to pay for a hardware failure like this is crazy. Im seriously considering getting a PS3 and the $100 price drop goes a long way.

Mine has been making a grinding noise ever time I start it up for the last 3 months and has a problem with opening and closing the tray. I sort of fixed the opening problem by cleaning the rubber band that opens and closes the tray. I might try to find a better band to put in there if it acts up again on a regular basis.

Can anyone tell me why it stops reading games and not movies? It would seem if it was a bad drive it wouldn't read anything. Maybe it's a software issue. Got mine back 2 months ago and the same game that started the prob gave me a dirty disc error today and that's how it starts. Rebooted and it was fine, but I'm nervous now.

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club

I Think that certain games can cause reading errors. If it still plays other games, cd's, and dvd's, I would imagine it would be ok. Also, from my understanding, the 3 year warranty only covers the RLOD issue. If i'm wrong please correct me, because then I have to go back to M$ support and argue with the indian people until they send me to the US so I can get some decent customer support and not just a script. I swear sometimes max can be more useful. at least I can understand him.

the ps3 will run forever. best built console ever. also instead of paying ms for back grounds and things like that, you just do your own on the ps3. too bad the 360 is so last generation and fgaulty.   ps=less than 1% failure    360=  greater than 33% failure.  thats why sales of the ps3 have doubled and the 360 is in a nose dive. last quarter ms lost 1.2 billion[doesnt include the 1.5 billion write off thats next quarter] and ps3 lost 235. thats 5 times the losses for ms and they keep growing. its a shame when they stop production next year.

My first ps3 broke within 2 months so i cant say its the best built. Personally I give the best built console award to my 8 Bit Nes it still works and I give the best built console with an optical drive award to the gamecube.

My GC drive went dead but that was my brothers fault... Nitendo has WAYYY better support than M$ though. We had the cube for three years and it was repaired free of charge including shipping and got it back in about 9 buissness days. Oh, and the support guy I spoke to didn't speak broken english either. It's always good when you can understand what someone is saying.

Just got mine back tonight and the Drive seems to be working fine however and I checked to see if I had the new heatsink and it did not. :( I was hoping they would throw that in as well during the repair but I guess they did not.

I'm in a bit of a limbo because it's not happening often enough to force me to get it fixed, but it's often enough to make me angry.
Mine seems to be the about the same as above. It's done this a few times and the 1st time was several months ago. I can get it to work again by ejecting and putting a disk in for about 10 minutes. When I get the disk unreadable, my disk drive doesn't do anything. The disk doesn't spin or anything. I can tell when I'm getting close to it working again because the laser will start kicking in again. It's very strange and VERY aggravating. I've had my 360 for almost 2 years and it was born on October 2005.
Don't worry, I brought all of my digital weapons.
