YOU WANT TO BE TALKED ABOUT IN THE SAME BREATH AS OTHER FOOTBALL NATIONS???

THEN....

1. stop calling football ((soccer)) you've even got beckham saying it lol.

2. make football the number 1 sport in the usa - (only usa citizens can do that)

3. give us something out of the usa football wise and ffs dont say B.MCBRIDE lmao...

finally we don't have a go at other leagues ie n.ireland, malta etc because no other nation moans about it

This is for your "calling it soccer" comment.

This is from Greg Lalas' column on cnnsi.com,

Slamming American soccer -- and American soccer fans -- is a great pastime for many non-American fans, particularly Anglos who are subconsciously bitter that their national team can't even qualify for the Euro Championship. One of their favorite insults is some variation of this: "Americans will never be good at football -- and, yes, it's called 'football,' you stupid ***."

But the truth is the word "soccer" derives from "association football," the game's original name, as opposed to "rugby football." In other words, it's a British word. The haters really hate when you point this out.

You are correct that the word soccer does derive from Association Football, it was first used in the late 19th century but was rarely used by the majority. Soccer is a slang term such as rugger for rugby, the fact that North america is the only area in the world where there is a point blank refusal to call the sport by its proper term is what kind of annoys people.

lol, you just admitted that "soccer" is actually the proper term. Just because it's not used by the majority doesn't make the minority wrong.

So, in fact, it is the refusal of your so-called "majority" to use the correct term that is annoying.

It's also that elitist attitude that english speakers on this side of the world find irritating.

Yeah MLS is brutal. I hate and love watching it.. haha
I would definitely not watch any american teams by themselves because I'm just used to watching good teams.  haha :)
The only reason I watch it is to support my friends in the TFC. They're amazing footballers and would destroy me on the field.

I wish Canada had a soccer team. lol

Anything not involving ice, a puck, skates, full body armour and a net Canadiens can't do. I think they should just not bother to be quite honest.

I think he's a moron for trying to insult the English national team really. Considering we beat USA 2-0 with a team that really doesn't have a clue, it shows that we're quite a bit further ahead of you. I would love to see USA try and qualify for a competition involving all the teams in the European Championship Qualifiers. God, I wreckon even teams like Slovakia, Belguim and Macedonia would be able to beat them.

Re: Why all the hate to the U.S. and MLS?
NFL eclipses the MLS league completely  Which is the main problem

2nd problem is American teams are not allowed to compete in major club tournaments such as the UEFA champions league

Maybe If  FIFA tm Re-developed the Club world championships into a bigger tournament depending on where teams finished in the league could compete in a say 64 team tournament with at least 2-4 teams from every league competing... Other than that Americans really have no talented football players and that isnt an insult at you guys but to make it work....Qualify for the FIFA World Cup 2010

Until the MLS invests in a proper coaching and youth development systems it will continue to be a third rate competition with little or no interest from anywhere outside the US.

Bingo, this is the massive whole in the US's system. Youth development sucks. I know, because I went through it growing up, and there's not much to brag about. It's almost like here in the US, to play for the leading youth leagues, or ODP is more a symbol of status than actual development. It's so you can say "Hey I play ODP so I'm sweet, I don't need to learn anymore." Whereas when I go to visit my family in mexico, they have soccer school, dedicated to finding talent in 9-12 year olds and then molding them to step up into the proffesional team's youth systems. Down there they don't care that you play for the "elite team" in your state, so you're automatically in, they just look for talent and potential.

Then the second pitfall that the US has is the high school and college system. I grew up playing with a great team, good coaches, we all worked together learned together, I grew as a player. Then came high school soccer, which for some reason takes priority over club soccer, and everything went downhill. generally you go to a high school in your area, if they suck, tough luck, that's your durisdiction. You can move, transfer etc. but only a few kids are gonna be willing to do that by then. Universities look mainly at high schools for players, and from there the MLS teams DRAFt(which is ridiculous).

The sysyem doesn't work, it's extremely casual as opposed to other countries, especially in england, argentina, holland, brazil etc. where they take it SERIOUS, really serious.

Until the US stops wasting millions in bringing in ex-superstar players, and instead, start investing those millions in building a great youth system, the US won't cut it. Every once in a while we'll get a good team, because the players really care enough to go beyond the training the US offers, but that's really what seperates us from the international powerhouses.

I don't get where are this hate for the belgian league is coming from. It's been mentioned in this thread as one of the worst in the world over and over, and that's just not true. It's a good league, well decent, especially taking the countries size into consideration. Watch Standard Liege or Anderlecht play, then tell me they're on the same level as Norway, Poland(not bad either), Austria(okay this one is pretty bad..) You don't even mention the eastern european leagues like croatia, serbia, georgia, they're pretty bad. Not to mention Wales and Ireland, which never got mentioned.

Well, the MLS all-star game was played last night in Toronto against a West Ham side, with the MLS all-stars winning 3-2.

It was a very enjoyable match, with lots of action and scoring and it was a clear display that the MLS is a young and quality league with great things to come.

Thanks Dude.

Hey we all love football right? I don't see the point in dissing another countries league. The more people into footy the better as far as I'm concerned.

So, looks like my hero Keano is off to the Pool. Shame, but I'll reserve final judgement until we know who his replacement is.

Talk is of Arshavin at the moment but I have doubts we'd pay his ridiculous rouble wages. Love to be proved wrong mind.

I'm sure Snr Ramos knows what he's doing. Should be an interesting season.

Come on You Spurs!!!

personally i see at as a bit of a joke its almost like saudi and qutar who pay big wages to players who are past it and when i saw beckham first press conference they had the red carpet all the confetti or whatever it was thats not football you wouldnt see that happen in the european leagues i was sitting cringing when ti was on sky sports news imagine if ac milan donethat when theyve just signed ronaldinho ?

Um, Milan did do that when they signed the "buck-tooth wonder". It was a complete media circus, much like wherever Beckham goes over here.

Well, the MLS all-star game was played last night in Toronto against a West Ham side, with the MLS all-stars winning 3-2.

It was a very enjoyable match, with lots of action and scoring and it was a clear display that the MLS is a young and quality league with great things to come.

No it only shows that the MLS "All-Stars" can win a friendly against a team using the game purely to gain fitness for the upcomng season and a little bit of marketing. The MLS is a million miles away from being a quality league, with proper investment and coaching it could improve and maybe gain some respectability but not while you sign the likes of Beckham for vast amounts of money.

You guys are funny, the league hasnt been around very long, maybe 10 years or so. 2 more teams to come in '09 and possibly 4 total by 2010. Check back in a few decades and then you can talk sh!t.

Oh and the guy that said the Prem is the hardest league to win, lol wtf how exactly is that justified ? When is the last time a team outside the big 4 won it?

Bottom line my country ownz and I wouldnt wanna live anywhere else, being a melting pot of all walks of life and cultures is what the US is all about.

Im enjoying our complete and total dominance of Mexico atm, good times, good times. Last world cup our group was rough, we should do better in the Olympics.

Comparing leagues that dont compete in UEFA is like comparing apples to oranges, its pretty pointless. And I have little doubt that New England wouldnt finish in the top 10 if they played a season in the prem. Yeah I said it.
