Re: How to find a full 65nm Jasper console…
Easiest and best way to clearly identify Jasper without opening the box is one simple way.

Look through the hole in the box, to the left side it will show the amperage on the console.  It will say either 14.2a or 12.1a. If you see 12.1a then its a jasper, if its 14.2 then its a falcon.

You may have to jiggle it/push the tab over a little to the left to see the amperage through that little hole on the box.

Is the Jasper chip 360 only in the Arcade bundle? I really want the Pro bundle.

  It's in all SKU's.
If it can be put on backwards, someone will do it

I finally received my Jasper console today, Arcade, Team: FDOU Lot No. 0843X. 150 watt power supply, boy that sucker is light compared to the 203 watt ones.
I wanted a PRO but my source said they hadn't received any newly manufactured ones yet.
I will be doing some temperature testing against my Falcon console to see just how much difference there is!

First test results, watts. Using the same setup, except power supply.
Standard TV, and 20 gb HDD.
Jasper = 87 watts, dashboard, 97 watts, playing game.
Falcon = 95 watts dashboard, 108 watts, playing game.

Tests using a P3 kill a watt meter, 15 min. warm up.

Lot Number: 0832
Team: FDOU
Manufacture Date: 2008/08/09
PSU Output: 175W
Console Power Rating: 14.2A

What model is this? Falcon? The unit was brought brand new as a Pro with 60gb HDD.

My PSU is different compared to older ones as it doesn't have the locking mechanism to stop it from coming out of the back of the console.

I just picked up a pro console. Says 12.1A on it but came with a 175 power supply. How could I even tell if it's a jasper? And does the power supply not being 150 matter? Date is 10/22/08 Team CSON and the lot is 842x if any of that helps. Thanks.

You appear to have a Jasper unit that ships with a 175W brick.
To provide the forum with empirical data, can you do a flashlight/grill test?
When you shine a light through the side-front (console laying flat/horizontal), next to the CPU heatsink you can see the caps - a first group of 4 on the left, a second group of 2 on the right.
Are they tall/black? Or, short with red tops?

Thank you.

If your console came with a 150 watt power supply then you have a Jasper, because the other console can not use that power supply.

If your console came with a 175 watt power supply the best way to see if you have a Jasper is by checking the power connector on the console. Should be pictures on the first page of this thread.

JWSpeed,
From the pic in the link below, it looks like I have the jasper. Is this a legit way to tell if it's the jasper? And if so, does having the 175 watt power supply matter over the 150? Thanks for your help!

Not that I am looking right now, but a poster above said look at the opening through the box.  It says 12.1A you know it is Jasper.  Is that near the serial # or above the power plug connecter area?

Yes, because the connector use for the Jasper is the only one that will work with the 150 watt power supply. You can not plug the 150 watt supply into any other 360, but you can use a 203 or 175 watt supply with a Jasper. The 175 watt power supply will work great with the Jasper.
So if your console has the Jasper connector then you have the lastest console!

Re: How to find a full 65nm Jasper console…
Excellent information, thanks! I'm kind of curious as to why Anandtech's numbers differ than yours on the falcon so much... Take a look:

http://www.anandtech.com/gadgets/showdoc.aspx?i=3152&p=6

This is an old article and does compare Falcon to Xenon. Their Falcon's numbers were 100w dashboard and 120 playing a game vs your 95/108 numbers. I can only assume the difference is the test equipment used? It's a difference of 5% and 10% respectively. If we adjust anandtech's Xenon 149/173 numbers down by 5 and 10 percent, we get 142 and 156. So, adding to your table we get:

Jasper = 87 watts, dashboard, 97 watts, playing game.
Falcon = 95 watts dashboard, 108 watts, playing game.
Xenon = 142 watts dashboard, 156 watts playing game.

Do everyone agree with my calculations to account for the difference in test equipment? Either way, we can see a BIG improvement in Jasper over the originals and a significant difference between Jasper and Falcon even.

Re: How to find a full 65nm Jasper console…
I went to bestbuy and looked for a Jasper but I coulnt find one. They only had 2 Arcade but none were a jasper. I checked the Pro and Elites but they were not jasper. Most of the Pros Had a lot # 0841X and most of the consoles were made before 10/23/08. It really hard to find one and I also feel uncomfortable looking for one cause everyone looks at me and they probably think that trying to steal.
I hope I can find a Pro before X-mas.

Yes, different test equipment! The type of DVD drive in the console and the fact both my consoles are brand new could also makes a different.

Just get a sales person to help, tell them you want to purchase a new 360 that uses less power, have them check for the 12.1 amps in the box window. If they don't want to help tell them you will spend your money some where else!
Usually BestBuy stores have more consoles in the back, and most sales people will help!

Either way, we can see a BIG improvement in Jasper over the originals and a significant difference between Jasper and Falcon even.

As in a 30.7% playing-a-game decrease in power consumption (given the data gathered is derived from a Kill A-Watt), and the Falcon still RRODs. Not to mention this methodology cannot possibly measure the GPUs specific performance.
We should note too that while good money is spent on the CPU/GPU, M$ did not do justice by skimping on the system board (one being the all too known soldering process).

It has not been absolutely defined (not that I know of) that the GPU is the sole culprit, or that would have been resolved via the Falcon revision. Now we shall see if the next Jasper version, a -10.1% power consumption, fixes the RROD.

Re: How to find a full 65nm Jasper console…
I found one from Lot 0843X yesterday at Walmart, but the manufacture date was 10-21-2008. I couldn't see the amperage rating through the little window, but I didn't know exactly where to look. I had a Walmart employee breathing over my shoulder, so I didn't feel like talking too long. I decided not to risk buying it.

Also, before going to Walmart, I checked a few dozen systems at a Best Buy and they didn't have any.

Man, I hope I find one. I'll probably try a different Walmart tonight.
