i totally agree on all fronts here. if u can succeed at cod vetern or  gow on insane you are not just the casual gamer, that takes dedication. ive been offline a few months now an i miss it but i still game everyday. viva pinata one of many ways ive found to get my ol lady an kids involved. my three year old kicks butt at street fighter 4. point is to be "hardcore" you cant just play gow all day, expand your horizions. thousands of games out there waiting to be demolished by anyone who cares to try. and yes i still have all my old systems and games from nes to my 360 hooked up an ready to play.         VIVA LA GAMERS

You bring up some very compelling points. I was the first person on my friends list to 1000/1000 COD4. In my opinion that alone makes me pretty good at the game. However, if you ever see me in COD multiplayer, I am pretty terrible, so where does that put me on the hardcore scale? I've put in more than 200 hours of gameplay into Mass Effect, does that make me serious?
i hear you my multiplayer skill is not as good as i would like either, but multiplayer is just that. multiplayer is just a portion of what a games true value is. ive spent hundreds of hours alone in the dark playing cod4 and waw, fallout 3, playing the game for what it is not shooting down people over and over again gettin tenth prestige for 0 gamer points. hardcore means your not afraid to go one on one against the game.   VIVA XBOX360

well for that specific example that is annoying but only if he labels himself as a serious gamer however others such as myself a rising sophmore in high school only have so much money to spend on games i spent a ton of time on what little games i have and i would label myself as a determined-serious gamer

Re: Serious 'Gamers'
I have to admit I get really annoyed with some of my high school friends. When Halo 3 came out, that was all we played, and for a few of us, it was the reason we bought an Xbox 360. Later on, Gears of War 2 came out, and I really enjoyed playing it. I tried to get my friends to try it, but they said it was dumb and un-realistic. They hadn't even tried it! All they play is Halo, anytime, anywhere. It bugs me when my closest friends are so narrow-minded.

I understand if you can't buy the game, but too often people split into Halo, GoW, or CoD groups, and refuse to play anything else. A few have only played multiplayer, and never even tried the campaign modes. Can one truly call themselves a gamer if they are too stubborn to try any new games? I'm not asking you to switch from Halo to Katamari (ugh) but it's something to think about.

Something really irks me about people who own a major colnsole and buy maybe a few big-name games a year and thats IT, then call themselves serious gamers. Peple like who buy all sports games and COD, while completely ignoring everything else. This isn't really detremntal to the games industry like 'casual' gamers buying wii shovelware, but it just seems ignorant.

Example:
A guy I know fits this profile and, weeks before COD: WaW's release, was hyping it up and came to talk to me. This guy has obviously never picked up a gaming magazine, and has never looked into his purchases beforehand. He tells me COD: WaW is set in Vietnam. I tell him that it is WW2. He says his dad fought in Vietnam and he should know. .......WOW...... The same person owns only sports games, Halo, and COD.

This seems to be a real stereotype in the gaming market, but its not really noticed. I get very upset about technolgy, games, and all that good stuf I love. I am by no means an expert on any of these subjects, but PLEASE, PLEASE, understand something and follow it before you stick your kneck out as an 'authority' on it.

Sorry about the rant, just thought I should get it off my chest...eventually. Comment or complain, I wonder if this bothers anybody else.
Yeah I don't know if I'd wanna be a wii gamer either, however I am a little jealous of nintendos access to all those delightful resident evil games.Who would go around proclaiming to be a hardcore gamer anyway?I love video games but I don't think I would ever brag about it.Forget about it.

HEY! I like katamari. :(  Also Halo is the most realistic game ever man, jumping 8 feet in the air is soooo realistic. and taking over 20 bullets to kill you is one of the most realistic experinces of all time. do your friends know what they are playing?

i have a friend who is the same way, i had to talk him into getting a 360 instead of a ps3, saying that it had more and better exclusives. so when he goes and buys his first games, there sports games! it takes him a bit to buy halo 3, which everybody has so big whoop, but he barley played it! Just like gears 2, he had to resort to chain-sawing. He thinks he is a hardcore gamer, so I can TOTALLY see where your coming from.

For real...People nowadays think they are all hard core cuz they have killed 5 guys in Halo and stuff like that. Some people dont care, just play for fun, but then other people try to ruin a fun experience by talkin S!$% in the game lobby. Lay off people, its just a game.

Just because you dont buy a lot of games during the period of a year dosent mean you arent serious about gameing! some people dont have the money to do that. I feel the qualifications on a seriouse gamer are indacated by the ammount of time spent playing and the skills aquired by this. If you classafie the people by the ammount they purchess you'r pathetic! I wonder are you well off or does mommy and daddy support you. or maybe you'r in you'r thirtys living in you'r parents basement.Stick out tongue [:P]

Re: Serious 'Gamers'
I guess that it depends on what your definition of "Gamer" is.
I know that people who buy all the latest and greatest games and play 24/7 are gamers.
What about the Soccer Mom whoPlays and raids in WoW 3 nights a week? I'd say that she is a gamer.
What about the chick that plays Peggle and pogo games online? I'd say that she is a gamer too.

I guess what I'm saying is, we have room for all types of "gamers" in the world.

Re: Serious 'Gamers'
Hmmm i would have thought that people that own a games console but rarely play are not gamers however people that put alot of time and effort into games are dedicated gamers. All this crap with hardcore gamers should stop. There is no clear definition of what a hardcore gamer really is so why dont we all drop this title. I mean i dropped pretty much my entire social life when i was a teenager to crack on with my games but now im 22 i have other responsibilities. it makes me laugh to think the very people that are hardcore have a definition that if you grind on games you are hardcore. No it means you want a challenge it doesnt mean your hardcore. please drop this crap because these so called hardcore players are only hardcore in their own eyes. with no clear meaning to what one is....i think they should just except theres no such thing

It doesn't matter how many games you have, its how good you are at them, or how often you play them. That is what i think defines a "Serious Gamer".

Re: Serious 'Gamers'

I thought a serious gamer was someone who was really good at playing games..not someone who spends the entire day playing games...there is a big difference you know. I have a friend who literally plays games all day but really sucks at multiplayer...he loves playing games..but is he a "serious gamer" or not.

Re: Serious 'Gamers'
Well pain train, I grew up playing games. I played from Atari all the way through to my 360. I play whenever I can. But seeing as how some of us have to grow up and do not have time to play games 24/7, things change. I used to stay up all night, and play all day. Then I got a job. Then I started a family and now I have what's called a life. I still stay up all night on the weekends playing CoD with my friends and family, but I don't have the time or money to invest in every game that comes out. Especially when, IMO, there are games out there like CoD that have perfected the graphical, gameplay, story and online portions of gaming. I get my kicks by trying every demo that MS gives us on the Xbox. If it doesn't WOW me, then I'm not spending my hard earned money (that I share with my family) on it. Too many times, games have come out with all the hype and everything going for it. But there are only a few that can live up to it. Those are the games I spend my $60 on. You can say I'm not a serious gamer all you want. But, if you ask me, it's the idiots out there that spend over half a bill on Bionic Commando that don't know what they want and are wasting their money. Embarrassed [:$]

Re: Serious 'Gamers'

Star [star]Whatever games people play is up to them.  They are the one who spend the money on the game.  Far be it from me to tell other people how to spend their money.  I offer suggestions to peeps on my friends list but that's as far as I go.  Everyone has different tastes so I say let each to their own.

*Plus my friends and I are all older now.  We have responsibilities like paying rent, buying food, fixing the vehicles we own, heat, electricity, water, sewage, taking care of kids, taking the wife/girlfriend out, other hobbies.  With this economy some things need to be cut in order to make ends meet.  To me at least if that means only buying 1 game a month or every three months then so be it.  Since games are 60$ or more with collectors edition it's not wise to waste that on experimental titles.  So it's easier for people to stick with a familiar brand.  At least then you know you'll get a solid game.

Letting this bother you makes me think that you need to step back from video games and stop acting like a douche.  So what that some guy doesn't buy as many games as you do or that he made a mistake about a game WHO CARES!

The problem isn't this guy's ignorance but your ignorance.  I have all the systems and have a I have a great job which allows me to purchase any game I really want and I have a huge collection but does that mean I'm more of a gamer than anyone else?  NO and it would be stupid of me to think otherwise.

The Stereotype is people like you who act like douches and treat casual gamers badly.

Replying to the thread's original discussion..

Serious gamers are any gamer that try to win. That's it. Doesn't matter how many games you play, how often you play them, or even if you actually win the game. If you're trying to win the game, you're being a serious gamer.

I exclude anyone who glitches in a game from being a serious gamer. That's just being a cheat.

PS: My gamerscore is decieving. I used to rent games out the wazoo. Now, I don't. I only have 5 games total right now on my 360.
