Okay enough already, this is not an issue with Xbox LIVE. It is your personal Connection, whether it be a fault of your Router, Router Settings or ISP.

I do not ever get "kicked" off Xbox LIVE with the exceptions of;
  • No ISP Service for maintenance (which they did to me once)
  • No Xbox LIVE Service (again there it is about once a year and it effects everyone)
  • I unplug my Ethernet Cable
You need to resolve whatever problem you and your "buddy" are having first. It could be very possible since it sounds like both of you are having the same problems, both of you might have the same problems with your Set-Up.

If you would like, could you please describe the Settings on your Router? And please be very specific, do not simply state "I have ports open". Try some of the following;
  • Is your IP Address Dynamic or Static?
  • Are you using DHCP Enabled (Automatic Settings)?
  • Do you have any Services applied like UPnP or QoS?
If you need help with the Set-Up of a Router or Private/ Home Networking Equipment, just ask. It's difficult to help without someone explaining their level of understanding. If you have no idea of any of the above please aks.

if its just a personal connection then everybody i know there connection is messed up too because i get kicked off where ever there is an internet connection. right now im kicked off and my xbox says something about MAC settings and DHCP but i have no idea how to get on my router configuration page anymore. i use to just type in the ip address and it would pop up but it doesnt do it now.

You can simply get to your Router by going from your PC to;
  • Start (the lower Windows Icon)
  • Network
  • Right Click over the Router and View Device Web Page
Your Router Sign-In by default should be both;
  • User Name- admin
  • Password- admin
Before you do this, do you have any Advanced Settings that you applied on your Xbox 360 Network? When trouble shooting it is very important that you do not use generic terms like "it says something like". You need to Reply with what it says exactly.

From what it sounds like is both your Xbox 360 and your Router have incorrect Settings. You need to be very specific in what you did when you tried to Set-Up both your Router and Xbox 360.

Re: why can't we play online for free?
can't obtain an ip address from router or modem. make sure DHCP is enabled and has a large enough address range for all devices on the network. also make sure that your routers MAC filtering allows your console's MAC address or is disabled. that what is says.

Okay from this here it sounds like you might have very little experience with a Private/ Home Network Set-Up/ Configuration. I use a Linksys as well. Sorry, I have to go to work now but I'll be back later to Post a Reply that will walk you through from beginning to end.

Swing Shift for me (3pm-11pm) but anwho...

If you feel confident enough to go through and make changes to your Router/ Private/ Home Network, complete the following. Do keep in mind that any changes made on your Router could effect other Users (PC) or other Equipment on your Network.

Okay with that said start from the beginning;
  • Sign onto your Router
  • Go to Administration
  • Go to Factory Defaults, Reset/ Restore and Save (you will/ might get a prompt for "are you sure")
With this done, turn Off your PC, Xbox 360 and Reset the Router by Unplugging it for more then 30 seconds. This will give your Router a chance to Refresh with a good signal. Turn your PC back (it might or might not Connect with the Internet at this time- Do not worry if it does not).

Now you should have a clean start to only adjust the Settings required on your Router for a solid Xbox LIVE Connection;
  • Sign onto your Router (again)
  • Go to Setup (you should be on this Page be default)
  • On the Internet Connection Type, Click Automatic Configuration- DHCP
  • Enable DHCP
  • MTU should set to Auto (1500)
  • Save the Settings
  • Go to Administration
  • Enable UPnP (Universal Plug and Play)
  • Save Changes and exit
From here you should Shut down your PC (again) and (again) Refresh/ Reset the Router. While it is off this would be a good time to Refresh/ Reset your Modem as well. Make sure you plug back in the Modem first and wait for all of the Lights to return to "normal". Once the Modem is powered back on, plug back in your Router and again wait for everything to powered on before continuing.

Turn on your PC and make sure it Connects to the Internet. Turn on your Xbox 360 and start an Xbox LIVE Test. It should Connect without any difficulties and with Open NAT Settings. If so congrats, that is all that is needed for this "type" of Private/ Home Network. You should no longer get any disconnections from Xbox LIVE, other than if you Unplug it, or your ISP is not up and running.

Do not use any other Features on the Router, such as DMZ, Port Forwarding or such. You can only use One Solution at a time. In other words UPnP, does not work with DMZ, UPnP does not work with Port Fowarding. Just a side note for example, UPnP Opens Ports that are required, there is no use or need for Manually Opening Ports if UPnP is Enabled.

If you have any questions just ask.

Re: why can't we play online for free?
  From the 360 dash, hit your silver guide button and goto the right most tab 'Settings'. Select 'System Settings' followed by 'Network Settings'. Then you need to select 'Test Xbox LIVE Connection' it will run its diagnostics and report back to you..  this is where your NAT info use to be, either I cant see it because my NAT is Open and it only reports on moderate/strict or they have changed the location of this information. Any input Lost?

Re: why can't we play online for free?
XphR, that is correct. The "pre" NXE Dashboard use to make a Report of each type of NAT Setting, where it was Open (it would state it), Moderate or Strict. The NXE Dashboard only states when you have Moderate/ Strict NAT, if you have Open NAT it will not state anything.

So if it does not state anything and only says, "Connected with Xbox LIVE" it is an Open NAT setting. duviee71, you did run an Xbox LIVE Test and it stated you have Strict NAT? And did you also follow all of the above, step by step?

Re: why can't we play online for free?
Sure no problem, I thought it was kinda silly that the NXE got rid of the Open NAT Notification. I guess they thought it was to technical for an average User. But in the end I would rather have too much information than not enough on something.

Something looks like it worked for the OP, he was last seen Playing Online [PROTOTYPE]. That's good at least (the playing Online, not the Game).

   lol Ouch, I have heard [PROTOHYPE]s entertainment value wears out fast. I agree completely about to much info, absolutely nothing wrong with an "everything is working fine" notification.. much better than "I can only assume nothing is wrong" with the lack of warnings.

If it does not say anything, you have Open NAT.

The Party separation where people get dropped out is a known problem. Try not using "Appear Offline" while joining a Party. This is something MS is aware of and have been trying to address for a while. Some it effects quite often, others never get it.

   Did you attempt this? And also could you list your Router and perhaps its software revision? The number should be ob the administration page after the sign in screen.
