Re: FIRST IMPRESSION ALL WHO'VE PLAYED RESPOND

After my very long dl time I got around to playing about 10-15 matches. Overall I would say this game is a long rental but definatley not a buy. The Vehicle control isn't very responsive and everyone feels like they run very slow. Being able to destroy pretty much everything is awesome but, for my taste at least, There is a little too much managing ehen the action get hectic. Squad mates seem practically useless and are basically good for meat shields. I think multiplayer should have eliminated the squad make and you should have been able to play with 16 people total (for an effect of 2 squads per team).

This game is worth checking out but my money is going to Ghost Recon and Battlefield (the trailer on the marketplace looks SWEET!) Glad I joined Gamefly :)

Eeh, its ok. Controls are a little sketchy. sound is good, graphics are hardly "nex-gen". I know this is only a demo but I just dint like the inteface between you and your men. I think in the online mode you should be able to have other gamers as your soldiers with one person commanding and making all the purchases. I know Relic was trying to do something a little different but when you put so many AI bots into play things just get all messed up.

I dont think ill be buying the game, I may rent it for further review.

Re: FIRST IMPRESSION ALL WHO'VE PLAYED RESPOND
I played for about 6 hours yesterday and knocked in around 15-20 matches. Its really fun when you actually play a strategic match against others (one of those matches took me about 30 minutes). My main gripe is the vehicle control, it also makes me sick when im driving one. You basically have no clue where you are going and everything just feels wierd. I think the AI squad is pretty useful, sure, they are really no match for a human opponent but they are useful for taking out opponents squads. I also enjoy calling in gunners and what not to help keep points you captured and they are fairly useful. Ill definately buy the game, Ill use it as a backup game if GR isnt what I want it to be. It seems like a good game to actually have a steady amount of action with a decent amount of strategy

My take
Just wanted to drop a few first impressions on this game...

- XBL Arcade needs to do something about the downloads, maybe it's the demo rush but this thing took 5 hours for me to download (I have a fast connection). Oh well...

- This game is just plain fun and very original (for the 360 anyway). I takes a while to figure out what's going on, but once you master the Reinforcement menu, the game gets great. This game rewards intellegent play more so than twitch play or sniper skills. There's a lot of hidden depth here too, like the ability to blow up (and repair) vital bridges.

- The action is interesting, it's not too fast-paced, but it is hectic and exciting. As the game gets going, you'll quickly be surrounded by bullets and explosions.

- There's a lot of grief about the graphics. I really don't know what people expect from a game where the models are this scale. The graphics aren't amazing, but they certainly don't look bad and much better than games from Xbox and PS2 that are similar (like Mercenaries).

- The multiplayer plays best with teams of 2 or 3. The current competition is spotty as people are still trying to figure the game out. 1 vs. 1 is cool, but you can spend a lot of time chasing each other around the map. 4 vs. 4 games are set up via custom match (and therefore are not as popular) and I think the demo map is a little small for that many people. I had few issues of lag.

- The vehicle controls take a bit of getting used to, but the are fine. I think the way the camera sticks (instead of follows you) throws people off a bit. With the turreted weapons, I don't see how else you could do it though...

- You will like this game if you like games such as Mercenaries, Battalion Wars & Army Men. You will be disappointed if you expect Battlefield 1942 or Call of Duty.

Great job Relic! You sold me...

And for those that say this could have been done on the xbox1, I wouldn't be too certain about that.  This game has a great draw distance considering how much is going on at the same time.  Next gen isn't all about the graphics.  Being able to render/animate/destruct many objects simultaneously requires hardware that is capable.  Another true test of next gen hardware will be the upcoming full blown RTS, Battle for Middle Earth 2.

After playing the game even more and learning even more about it, it really IS a good game.   There is just WAY to much going on smoothly to be done on Xbox.
( AND NO I DON'T MEAN LAG )  What I'm mean is... at any given time there are 3 - 6 things exploding at once. ........
Accurate shadowing effects ( planes flyin over head, not to mention the planes themselves which are usually dropping something ).........
  The fire effects......( Buildings burning, people burning, vehicles burning,  flamethrower, etc...... )
All I can say is once you really start to play you see how much the 360 is actually doing as far as mechanics.
( It isn't always about graphics)
I put myself into the frame of mind that
1. this is supposed to be humor not seriousness
2. to me if I think of it like the old Spy vs Spy cartoons except with war characters it becomes hillarious!

However, my only beef is the lack of instruction, as a matter of fact alot of people would have a different grasp of the demo had some instructions and/or direction were published within the menus. I still dont feel like i completly know what im suppose to do...

Here's a quick breakdown for those who wanna give it another shot.
IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER HERE GOES............
D PAD UP = SQUAD ASSAULT ( try other directions also....)
LB = SWITCH WEAPON
LT =  THROW GRENADE
RB = SPRINT
RT = SHOOT
IM SURE YOU ALL KNOW THE REST, NOW HOW TO PLAY AS FAR AS I KNOW..........
Everyone starts with a set amount of MONEY...
As you capture SPAWN POINTS, SCORE KILLS , ETC YOUR MONEY GOES UP

Y = PURCHASE SCREEN
Scroll your RIGHT THUMBSTICK around to select different choices of BACKUP:
( Vehicles, Support Troops, Air Strikes, etc...............)
If you have enough money the face button corresponding to what you can purchase will be selectable.
Your current money is located in the UPPER RIGHT OF THE SCREEN.
WHERE THE STRATEGY COMES IN IS HERE...............
When your team starts to control the various HOT SPOTS around the map it adds to what you can buy from the purchase screen, therefore LIMITING what the other team can now purchase.

You can also try to take out the BUILDINGS in a teams HQ, to keep them from being able to respawn.
( which I believe also takes Money away from the other teams purchasing Money )
If you control all hot spots and they have no HQ buildings to respwan from you can force an EASY WIN.

THESE ARE JUST QUICK TIPS I THOUGHT MIGHT HELP OTHERS ENJOY THE DEMO MORE...

NOW WITH THAT BIT OF INFO YOU SHOULD UNDERSTAND THE GAME A LITTLE BETTER AND HAVE MORE FUN..... USE VOICE AND HELP OTHERS WHEN YOU PLAY AND IT'LL MAKE YOU HAVE A BETTER TIME WHEN YOUR TEAM KNOWS HOW TO PLAY ALSO.

I will never deny anyone their chance to lose.....

Re: RE: FIRST IMPRESSION ALL WHO'VE PLAYED RESPOND
Well, would you want the ai to drive? How would you tell them where to go? They would just drive around? And they do work the guns, but the game lets your control where you shoot.. (like the jeep for example, the guy is operating it). But to make a comment on the graphics for a second... First of all, this is the online demo, the real game has better graphics according to ign. They turned off lighting effects to make the game play better online. Second, have you played 4v4 matches? The xbox1 could never handle that much stuff going on at once (and I might argue, most people's connections). You are trying to compare this game to Fight Night 3, and its never going to. Fight Night 3 has 2 characters that are highly modelled, controlling 1 ai character. Have you seen the crowd? Its a joke, there are like 5 or 6 character models, and they are all wearing the same shirt. Half the time they aren't even watching the fight at all in the slow-mos. But I digress... I dig FN3, and think the graphics are great, but graphically, its apples to oranges. Its discouraging that this many people think so 1-dimensionally about video games. I suppose thats why I have to endure the relentless taunting and jibber jabber during halo2 matches. Everyone gets an opinion in this world... I'm all for that... but would it kill you to think before you open your mouth, or type a forum entry?

Re: RE: FIRST IMPRESSION ALL WHO'VE PLAYED RESPOND
Ok I loved this game even though my girlfriend thought it sucked. But she doesn't like games like this anyway.  The first time i played was against her and i didn't know how to do anything. it felt kinda weird being so far away from my character and they felt a little slow moving.  the DoD commands are pretty easy to use and they make sense.  the second round i played was a little better i got the hang of the whole control system and was very fast at useing the DoD menu.  the third round i played was this morning on XBL against one other player and considering i was losing reinforcements fast i thought i was gonna lose the game easy, but i was able to take control of all the strategic points within 15 minutes. now i'm not the best gamer in the world but i guess my opponent was a little newer at the game than i was.  some how the bridges got destroyed at some point and i couldn't figure how to get to the centre point, once i got there i eventually figured out that you can actually call in a replacement bridge by looking at the place the bridge should be and when you see (a) repair appear you can hit the A button and repair the bridge.  I loved this game and can't wait for my pre-order to come in.  I give it a 9.0.  Waiting to see what the single player is like!?  I bet the single player is a lot like mercenaries but probably a lot cooler.

Hey Lord Furious... I like your name, but not your views on this game.

I couldn't stop laughing. I mean I was thinking this was a MS prank or something for a few minutes, until I actually realized it was an attempt at a next-gen game. Remember kids, this is NEXT-GEN. WoW!!!

This thing played like an N64 title, and not as good.

Re: RE: FIRST IMPRESSION ALL WHO'VE PLAYED RESPOND

First, the demo took about 25 minutes to download.  No big deal, I just started the download when I got home from work and then played it later that night after dinner.

Let me say that I am a diehard FPS gamer, but I did find this demo to be pretty darn fun.  For me it was a nice change of pace to play online compared to the lag-plagued COD2.  I didn’t think that the graphics were that bad at all and I thought the game play was pretty fun.  I only encountered lag when playing in 4 vs 4 matches, but the lag was bearable as things just moved slow… but at least they didn’t bounce all over the place – ala COD2.

It was a little tough to figure out the controls with no manual, but I started to get it over time.  I think a map or compass would be helpful in identifying where you are and where the control points are as you don’t get this info until you are waiting to spawn.  (However, maybe one of the buttons pulls this up during game play, I’m not sure yet)

Calling in artillery, vehicles, troops, and air strikes is way cool.  And of course that flamethrower is a blast!  Why in the world didn’t COD2 include a flamethrower ?!?!?!

I will probably being playing this until I get my copy of GRAW.  I will probably only go back to playing COD2 if/when the patch comes out and/or I get a friend invite to join a glitch match.  I probably won’t be buying this, not because I think it sucks but because I know I will be knee-deep in GRAW!

Overall Score: 8.5

Re: RE: FIRST IMPRESSION ALL WHO'VE PLAYED RESPOND

Things I love :

Destruction on demand, you can set up defenses to cover your *** in different areas, order reinforcements to capture strategic points.

AI control :
I love the idea of telling everyone where to go and defend, attack, supress.

MAPS:
I love the layout, Hills... trenches, Bridges. Its awesome if you know how to plan and strategize ambushes for anyone stupid to rush you .

ARMORY
: Different calibers of turrets, Different vehicles with strengths and weaknesses, The idea of HAVING to have someone in order to use everything in the car, EX: (Cant drive and shoot the turret if theres only one person there to do it)

Strategic Bombardment
: Order artillary strikes, or airstrikes to clear up strong defenses giving you trouble, or if theres a bridge you wan't to take out so your defenses are safe from a backward flank.

Wire Taps
: The ability to listen to your enemies conversations for a limited time... (I love that) I've listened to a couple of good players conversations, "Go secure the bridge, I'm going to try and sneak over to their base so we can establish reinforcements there" (As I set up 2 .50 Cal turrets on each back entrance enforced with 8 Panzer troops and 2 anti tank cannons...

Character Specialties : Heavy arsenal (Rocket launcher, Magnum,) Sniper (Light Rifle, Revolver) Gunner (SMG, Flamethrowers) You must know how to use each one in order to succeed. EX: If your enemy has nothing but turrets and tanks, Use the heavy hitter, all your squad members wield the same weapon. Pinned down by enemy turrets? Get the sniper, and circle round back and pick them off one by one all while taking over their defenses and using them as your own. Tons of troops at a base? Assult them with grenades, Suppressed fire, And torch their asses if they're behind pill boxes..

Things I don't like:

 Limited characters (Hopefully we get more...)

Crosshairs (Could be better, They're too small)

Sniper Aim (need scope, different distances)

Vehicle control (Could be better, too hard to turn)

Mild Lag : Occassionally you'll get a sorry connection..

Money Generation: Too slow, You're usually left broke if you don't capture key points, and theres no other way of generating revenue, Except for the hand me downs that fall from the sky.

Map Faults : Falling into a river sucks..... Slipping and sliding down also sucks....

HOPEFULLY this gives everyone a view of what a fan of these type of games loves about it... Notice I didn't complain about the graphics, I COULD CARE LESS! I don't play the game to watch the scenery, I play it to DESTROY IT. Anyways... I'm bored........ work sucks.

Pesonally, I love it, it was exactly what the screenshots and interviews led me to believe what it was going to be.  No disappointments here, especially for a demo.  Then again it's just my opinion, just like it's my opinion that just because people own cars it doesn't make them experts in auto design and engine mechanics, so why the *** would owning a 360 make you a expert in video game production?  Don't like, don't buy it, it's that simple.

Re: FIRST IMPRESSION ALL WHO'VE PLAYED RESPOND

At first, I was not impressed at all. The movement seemed really slow and clunky. I still think the vehicle controls are ridiculous (backing up is like walking a tight rope with a malfunctioning analog stick). But, given the size of the map in the demo version, the speed of movement is appropriate.

I like the Battlefieldesqe gameplay, with the added depth of having to purchase assets and own certain objectives to purchase better assets. Rounds seem to be tight, short, and addictive, all good things for a multiplayer title. Matchmaking is fast and reliable (certainly compared to CoD2).

I'm not to impressed with the graphics. I'm by no means a graphics ***; but, this looks like a high-res version of an Xbox game, not "next-gen." While the gameplay is innovative, I don't think it would have been impossible to make this game on the original Xbox. There's nothing really outstanding about it. It is fun though. I'll probably snag it when it becomes a best-seller and goes down in price. My $60 will go to GRAW, with an eye toward Obilivion.
