I have a friend that works in a neonatal ICU.  You have my sympathy (and respect).

I'm unsure why you feel sympathy for someone who works in Nickyou? I mean that I too have respect for people who care for premature newborns, but I see no reason you'd need to commiserate with them, their job isn't one of misery and morbidity.

I wonder if morbidity is even a real word ^^

Perhaps not, but I work with a guy who's wife works in the same area too, and it can be a most heartbreaking place.

Many people have an special sensitivty to ill newborns (perhaps due to their helplessness) which you may not yet understand.

I truly enjoy my job.  We see all kinds of patients, working in one of the largest NICUs in the area, from healthy and premature to sick and full term.  (and everything between.)  The joy far outweighs the heartbreak.

Re: Your Occupation
every day i have to see children with autism, pdd, down syndrome, and a host of other common and obscure medical problems / syndromes.  just because they have delays or disabilities does not mean that they or their families stop enjoying life completely.  initially, most parents take things very hard, but things usually get better.  sometimes it wears on you, but you share in the joys too.  knowing that you are helping even a little bit is a great feeling, even when there is no hope for rehabilitation or progress.

Re: Your Occupation
Hope this is not too bad a place to make my first post (got the console on what will be 2 years Dec 31st xD).  But I am a student just out of the University and applying to medical schools.

Aside from that I am looking for a medical/hospital related job and doing assorted modeling/advertising related works until I get a more steady income.
