Re: How to beat the CPU everytime [for ppl who need help]
Ok, so this has started to work.  I backed down from my tournament and just tried an Exhibition with another player to try it out.  This is what I learned:

1.  Until you are more skilled in using this, use a character that has a more powerful shot.  I was using Juergen to learn this technique, and wasn't getting it. When I tried the asian guy, it was much easier.
2.  It will work better if the opponent isn't hugging the right (your right) corner of the table for your second shot.
3.  Turn off automatic focus.  This will allow you to specify when to use it and will allow you to try this technique more often since you won't be wasting it.
4.  I switched my controller scheme to 'B' from 'A'.  'A' forced me to use the shoulder buttons for manual focus, which is harder coordination wise than use the 'B' style right trigger.

I won't say I am great at it, but the 1 in maybe 5 times I try it that it works, it is great.  I was able to finish the rookie tournament with it, thank god.

Thanks to all that were patient enough to help!

it works but make sure you have ur in focus mode or you do a RB focus shot because it doesnt work otherwise. i just backspin the entire time until i get focus, then i start using this method. works most of the time but not all the time.

Nice idea and it does work with certain characters. It doesnt work when you are using Luc against Hayley very well though. It works about 15% of the time, then you have the extremely difficult task of smashing it past her (Luc is rubbish) Nice work though.

Re: How to beat the CPU everytime [for ppl who need help]

i'm having a hard time with this--- so basically all you do is hit backspin balls in one direction until they return with a backspin ball, then u hit the appropriate hard combo shot in that same direction?

Re: How to beat the CPU everytime [for ppl who need help]
alright this is what is happening for me

1. I hit my Y-X shot to the left side of the table
2. 10% of the time I get a backspin return right be to me
3. then i hit the A-X shot to the left side of the table
4. it goes by the computer or the computer pops it up

this isn't what you guys said.......what am I doing wrong, after step 2 if i hit it to the right side of the table the computer is sitting there waiting for the shot and will kill me with a topspin

hook a kid up with some step-by-step

Re: How to beat the CPU everytime [for ppl who need help]
Here's a step by step as summarized from everything i've read here.  Someone recommended you practice this with jesper vs a crappy character like Kumi until you get the hang of it.  Then try it with different better characters.  Then take on pro or allstar.

Serve = YX low power to Left

Hit #2 = Backspin to Left so they backspin to your right or
             XY combo bottom left

Hit #3 = AX FOCUS combo to Left so they pop it up or
             AB FOCUS combo bottom right

Hit #4 = Smash it

Re: How to beat the CPU everytime [for ppl who need help]
This strat started to work for me last night so i'll expand on how this is done.  I did it with Kumi (the WORST player in the game) against some of the games best players like Jurgeon and Mark.

First some things to know before you try this
-Try it in exhabition first so you get used to the flow.
-The CPU doesn't return the same way every time.  Just keep backspinning shots to the left until you get a backspin return to your right.
-Learn how to read your opponent so you know if you're getting an underspin being returned or something else.  It's very easy to pick up on this.
-It doesn't work if you don't have any focus charge.
-I find this works most effectively when the CPU is the one serving, more a defensive mode system but it also works ok serving.

Now lets run through it:

Serve = Do the Ace serve (explained at the bottom) or just do a Y serve to the left max spin, 1/2 or 1/4 power

SHOT 1 = Stand just slightly right of the center line and hold your Y button immediatly after the CPU hits the ball.  This puts you in a good location for the return and starts  your focus charging.  When the ball gets to you aim left and let go of Y.  Now read the CPU's paddle for his return so you can tell if you're getting underspin back or something else.

SHOT 2 = If you don't get an underspin shot to your right, repeat step 1.  If you get an underspin shot to the right, move to the right corner of the table.  Hold your right bumper (focus) and do an AX return to the left.

SHOT 3 = If the cpu does not return a pop up to you, go back to step 1.  If you get a pop up, hold Focus AX immediatly and aim left for a smash while you're in line with the right corner of the table.  The more to the right you are and still be able to smash the ball, the more angle the ball will have and the less the chance of teh CPU making a return is.  If you smash from being in line with the center, the CPU will almost always be able to return it.

ACE SERVE

The ACE serve is something you have to tinker with to make work.  It will need to be tweaked for every character you play and every opponent you face.  But essentially it works like this:

Take 4,5 or 6 steps to the right
Aim bottom left and do a full power full spin X serve
If done right the ball will bounce once on your side, once on the very edge of the opponents side and go off the table without slowing down.

If the serve is wrong, when it hits the opponent side of the table the ball will sit up and the CPU will probably hit it hard striaght down the line.

You will need to play with your location as well as power with each character and each opponent you face.  The opponents vary in how effective this is.  Don't use it on Mark at all, he doens't go for it.  Also if you're playing a character with weak spin or week serves against a fast opponent, you'll really need to tinker with this to get it dialed in to work.  Or just forget about it and use the above strat to win your points instead.

Re: How to beat the CPU everytime [for ppl who need help]
One thing i forgot to add adn it won't let me edit is this.

For Shot 3, If you're having trouble getting pop-ups to the right you can do this which is a bit risky.  When you return shot 2, move just left of the center line.  This almost always causes the CPU to return right.  But you need to quickly move back to the right edge of the table once the CPU hits the ball.  If it's a pop-up, you'll have plenty of time to get there and setup for the smash though.

Re: How to beat the CPU everytime [for ppl who need help]
Seems like i'm talking to myself :).  Anyway here's an example of how you need to really learn your character.  I'm playing expert with Haley .  I couldn't get the Ace serve to work shooting it to the left.  So I modified that to 4 steps to the left instead then a bottom right aimed AX serve full spin, full power.  That would get buy most opponents unless i missed full power, in which case it was belted back at me.

Here's an example of how you have to adjust your smash.  I was facing the Korean dude, Jung Soo or whatever his name is.  I couldn't get a smash past him if i was on the right side of the table at all.  So i started smashing it from the middle of the left side of the table and would get it by him each time.

So the moral of the story is, there's no system that's 100% fool proof.  Every character you play will be able to do these moves in their own way.  The methods above are a template that needs to be adjusted for each character you're playing as inthe tournament.  When you get the major components of the strategy tuned to your player, you'll need to fine tune them all slighty based on your opponent.

Good luck, this is one of the most frustrating games i've played.  My wife hates it when i play this because when i'm playing one of the great opponents I get pretty amped, pissed, yelling , F bombing etc.  The game's not really fun at the Expert level, it's extremly challenging.  Every time i hit a really good opponent i ask myself i the 85 achievement points for Savant is worth it.  But thankfully i'm done with playign with the crappy characters, Kumi and Haley are out of the way finished the Expert tourney.

Great explanation TANK... still have a lot of practicing but the tips you gave were quite helpful in getting me past the 2nd round of the PRO circuit.  I had been stuck for awhile and had almost given up playing... now I'm back to the grind =)
