The headset that came with my brand new 360 is C R A P !
Me and my mate always try to talk over VOIP, I can hear him just fine but he has trouble hearing me at all. I have to repeat like 7 times before the microphone actually understands that I'm speaking - I actually have to >>>YELL<<< to make him hear me, I hate this as I am pretty sure my neighbors next door can hear me yell :P. It's an annoying headset.........
I can record my voice just fine but voice activation wont work properly for some reason! I have tried adjusting voice volume in the voice settings but it hasn't helped a bit. I have also tried to remove the cover on the microphone as I was desperate and it didn't help either.
Do I have to buy one of those adapters so I can plug in a standard headset that actually works? This is stupid..
there are many confusing things in your post. first, are you talking about a wireless headset? the wireless headset does not come bundled with any console that i know of, just the wired headset. second, the microphone doesn't have any sort of "cover." the speaker has a thin foam cover, is that what you mean? if so, taking that cover off will do nothing for the voice.
now, these things aside, it is well documented that newer wireless headsets have the mic gain set way too low. this change was made by MS about six months after release. it was an attempt to reduce feedback initial users reported while gaming online. in other words, the release headsets were very different in this aspect. you could easily be heard even while speaking at a low volume.
so, bottom line, there is nothing you can do unless you can re-program the gain on the mic inside your headset. the only real thing you can do is make sure you position the mic boom so that it is right on your cheek and as close to your mouth as possible.
