I've been reading this post for the last couple if weeks - mainly it's just been a slanging match. For what it's worth I do think the Prem is better, but there are many reasons for that (some of which have been put across in a sensible manner). The game's a lot older in Europe, is the most popular sport etc.

I'm not getting into it anyway as I'm not here for that. I just thought it was an interesting point about ticket prices. How much are they per game in the US roughly?

Varies city to city. I think tix in Toronto start in the $20 cdn range, if you can find a ticket, that is. My all-star tickets were priced at $42 cdn, and they were in the nose-bleeds. Compared to the other sports in North America, the average ticket price is pretty good.

That's not bad at all really - my season ticket cost me £760 - that's nearly $80 per game!

You say when you can get a ticket. Does that mean it's difficult to get one? Forgive my ignorance but that implies football - sorry soccer Stick out tongue [:P] is actually fairly popular over there. If so then wouldn't you expect the quality to gradually improve as the popularity does? Or do you think it will always be a sport behind American Football, Baseball, Basketball Ice Hockey etc in terms of popularity?

I think that in certain parts of North America, footy could become a top-tier sport, maybe in the next 10-15 years. Definitely on the up-swing in most markets. Look at Toronto. That market basically came out of nowhere to be on the MLS' biggest markets. Really hard to get a ticket for Toronto FC games, as opposed to some of the smaller markets like Columbus.
As long as soccer/football doesn't kill my beloved ice hockey in the states, I'm all for it becoming a mainstream sport in North America, which it just might.

Re: Why all the hate to the U.S. and MLS?

Another thing worth mentioning is the players are owned by the league not the team. Not being able to sign big talents wont bring in immediate crowds but I think its good for stability in the long run. The NY Cosmos brought in the likes of Pele and Beckenbauer before a strong fan base was established and it didnt pan out. I think theyre going about it in the right way atm by building soccer specific stadiums because having games played on astro turf or with yard markers really detracts from the feeling of a match. Also the quality of the pitch is much better in these stadiums. The result is truer passes, shots and less injuries.  Toronto has been a great addition to the league, the fans are wonderful and players love it there. I cant wait until the Bulls get the *** out of the Meadowlands and into their new Park in '09.

Re: Why all the hate to the U.S. and MLS?
i personally think the mls is boring to watch because of the fact its a slow game tht doesnt offer opportunites. when it does the players cant capitalize. but i do see hope. once mls teams start getting thier own stadiums and more and more teams enter the league i believe they will start to draw aging players to the US. once this starts to become a trend more and more good players will come to the usa and make the mls a more dominant league. But on the same page the mls might not take its chances and could get screwed over again. There is potential for the mls hopefully everything pans out because i would like to c a league tht could compete in europe

Re: Why all the hate to the U.S. and MLS?
First of all people from the UK and alot of Europe seem to hate the US fullstop, also the MLS is hated by me and my friends due to what it does to the game, it is the typical butchering of something being introduced to american culture. Clubs in the premiership are 120 or so years old in some cases and football is the main sport here and for some a way of life.

The name MLS inclused the word Soccer, which annoys most people who would call it Football, we dont call American Football something like Padded Rugby... another reason MLS i hated is due to how americans dont see 'soccer' as a cool sport and alot of the players in the leauge would have wanted to play baseball or 'american Football' not 'soccer'. whereas in most european countries football is by far the dominant and coolest sport.

The standard of games in the MLS (by no fault of its own) is also very poor and sometimes looks very much like the bottom leagues in England, for example alot of the goals are rebounds and lucky chances.

I also personally get annoyed watching most american sports with commentary due to the way stats and phrases are constantly used in the game, "Steven Gerrard is about 6'1 and 160 pounds" which to anyone who isnt american is worthless rubbish. Also other thing the commentator says are annoying too, i watched a game once and they couldnt understand why play had been stopped for an offside. It is also annoying how recent events such as David Beckham going over to the MLS has put the MLS into more of a global light, and when he manages to barely roll the ball into the opposing net from his own half people seem to think he is jesus or some magician, when my grandma could have scored that goal...

Also going back to my point about the history of the premiership using American terms in commentary and the names of the teams being very untraditional (which is often the american way in other sports which i understand) for example LA Galaxy and Chicago Fire, the names are so annoying...

Re: Why all the hate to the U.S. and MLS?

I don't agree with most of the above, except commentary and the names. The names aren't traditional due to the fact the MLS is only 15 years old. The commentary is just down to the language.

I don't think the geography helps a great deal. It's OK to follow yout team at home but how hard must it be to follow them away when it could be 2,500 thousand miles? That's a long (and expensive) way to be fair. Maybe if it was a bit like the NBA ( I believe that's regionalised until the playoffs?) it would be better supported, bigger, with more publicity, and eventually the quality would improve over time. I expect it will do that over time anyway.

Well, you have to break the sport down into terms that people can understand FIRST.

It does no good if you're using words like derby and pitch instead of rivalry and field, because then people are just going to get confused, then irritated and then they're going to change the channel which is the last thing that the MLS wants.

And like it or not it is SOCCER here in the U.S not FOOTBALL, because we had "our football" first, so it does no good to call it the same damn thing, because AGAIN, people are just going to get confused, and if you're marketing something then you need to be as clear as possible. So you can argue the soccer thing into the ground, but you're wasting your time.

Another thing, soccer is NOT just a European sport; that comment shows your arrogance. The last time that I checked it was played pretty well in countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, Paraguay, Ecuador, Korea, Japan, China, Turkey etc.

Which brings me to my next point; the leagues best chance at improving comes from importing players from Mexico and South America which it has already done. There has been a pretty decent number of guys from Argentina into the league, just this year. This has brought guys like Juan Pablo-Angel, Schelotto, Gallardo, Blanco into the limelight of the league.

Beckham brought big publicity to the league but the better acquisition was probably Cuathemac Blanco from Mexico who was the MVP of the all-star game.

I go to the Galaxy games and ticket prices range from $40 a game all the way to $250.

The Superliga final will be an all MLS affair New England vs Houston, if NE loses to Houston again they should all just retire.

Anyway Im not so sure about your comment that Blanco was the best acquisition, the guy just got himself suspended for 2 years of Cup play gg Blanco, gg. But yeah I love seeing the North American and South American styles mesh on the field, it brings a pretty unique feeling to the game and it certainly is the way to go as the players you mentioned are top notch and could play in any league in the world.

All the players he mentioned are over 30, and have ended up there because they could not do it in a top league anymore.

its already been said before, you need to find good young talent so that the european teams start taking an interest, because if the teams start looking at your players then the fans are also going to start taking an interest too.

signing players well into thier 30's who have already played in europe, and who's careers are starting to end is not the way to gain interest, people are always interested in the next batch of good young players.

Soccer/Football is the most played sport for kids up to a certain age in america, but after that there is nothing. you need to bridge the gap between young kids playing football to the MLS, you need continuity.

I honestly doubt that Blanco cares about being suspended 6 games over the next two years in the US Open Cup. Although, he might not act the way he did in that match and might actually care in the future if maybe MLS steps in with more discipline as well. While I hate Blanco as a player, he still is a pretty decent player. Unfortunately, he is kinda like Cristiano Ronaldo in a sense that while he maybe a great player, his diving ability deters from that.

Now THAT comment is very much on the mark; the MLS probably has the worst, most despicably inconsistent officiating in the history of professional sports.

I'd like to hear some Europeans take on this...Thanks for reading...

i dislike ppl like you who defend and like the mls. it sucks ok. its not going to be big in 10 or 20 years. if you speak spanish and love soccer just watch the mexican league. way better

Not true. My wife and I are big Bundesliga fans, and try to catch as many Bayern games as we can. Alot of MLS fans are also big watchers of the Prem, La Liga, and Serie A.
So many of us know what constitutes great football, we just choose to watch the "local scene" cause that's all we have here in North America.
Besides, spending time complaining about our continental sports leagues isn't going to make them any better. It just makes people miserable by being so negative.
I tend to have the mindset "enjoy what you got, cause sometimes that's all you ever have".
