i just called and they said i have to pay a 99$ fee to get it fixed. Why would i pay this 99$ fee and risk gettin the xbox back unplayable like i did last time. Should i just send it in anyway?

The only advantage to paying for the repair is that you'll have a new warranty with the same length and terms as the warranty for a newly purchased box.   Mine was out of warranty so I had to pay the $99 (actually $107 when they added taxes to it) but it now has a 1 year warranty and a 3 year rrod/e74 warranty.

Pay about $80 more and you can buy a brand new arcade,  pay about $100 more and you can have a brand new elite if you find the right deals.    I went with the repair because I just couldn't justify spending $200 right now but buying a new one makes more sense if one has the money to drop down on it.

well im only 17 and i got no job so dropping the money down for a new one isnt going to happen. but does anyone else agree that paying the fee is worth it?

I agree, when you buy a console you want to worry about budgeting what money you have to buy games and accessories for it not a replacement for it due to a fault caused by the manufacturer wanting to cut production costs!

The three years (which is more like two on top of the standard warrenty) is a start to fixing the issue. But is it too much to ask that the console be expected to last the duration of it's generation?

yes, E74 error is covered under the flashing three lights warrenty, you don't have to get both!

When I got the E74 error, it said it on the screen itself.   If you saw E74, you're covered.

What about E71 and E79? My system freezes before you can even get the dash board up. This is already a replaced unit and its warranty went out in April of this year. So sad xbox 360 hardware is not good. I have been on live since near its inception. The old xbox never had an issue and still works, Super Nintendo is still working, original atari still works. It will not do much good to bash the company and its equipment as when it works, I do think it is the best. Just frustrating!!!!!

Well, I responded to you with what those error codes supposedly mean but for some reason my post was deleted.  Weird.

Re: Xbox 360 Warranty extended for E74 - 14 Apr 2009
xbox sux... i sent in 3 systems to get repaired from which they all RROD. My most recent one RROD an my warranty i guess ran out so of course they wont fix it, so i have to pay $100 to get it fixed which sux cause i don't have it. So i call to get my xboxlive account turned off when my system RROD, comes to find out they didn't turn it off an there still charging me for something i cant play. So i call an ask to get my credit card removed off the account an of course they cant remove it (strange huh?) the only thing i can do now is have them turn off the automatic renewal from which i did already but still got charged previously. I asked if they can credit the $7.99 back to my credit card since im not able to play do to my xbox RROD an of course they cant (wow seriously?), but they are sooooo kind enough to tell me my xboxlive is still good till Nov 8th(sweet). So finally after all this trouble they finally turn off my monthly renewal. Even after a few systems an them charging my credit card i still tried to be dedicated to xbox, an they still don't treat me right. So now more then ever i wanna buy a ps3.

You need to call 1-800-4-MY-XBOX and get the registration transferred over to your name or your son's name.   Then you'll be able to see if it's under warranty or not.   You won't need receipts, MS bases the warranty on the original purchase date in their system.  If the system is 3 years old or less then it will be repaired/replaced at no cost to you.

Also, once you have the registration transferred over the phone, register it online at xbox.com as well.

Maybe if it isn't already signed up in his "friends" name. The repair will cost if out of warrenty!

Lesson of life: When buying second hand goods test to ensure they work and/or buy from a reputable retailer if possible(may include their on warrenty on second hand goods) so that you know you're not being sold a lemon!

Doesn't matter if it's already registered to his friend.   Mine was as well and it simply took a call to support and they transferred the registration right over to my name.

How can the 'original purchase date' be determined when I have been sent 7 replacements?  Shouldn't the 'purchase date' be when they sent you the replacement console?

And after my experiences with the 360 I would hardly refer to MS as a 'reputable retailer'.

Not really, when you send a console in for repair while still under warranty, you retain the balance of your original warranty or 90 days, whichever is greater.  So the date they send a replacement console is only relevant if it's a 90 day warranty.   They should be able to tell this when she calls support but I've seen many people post here that when they call about their console which got an additinal warranty after a paid repair they have no record of it.

And after my experiences with the 360 I would hardly refer to MS as a 'reputable retailer'.

Their support is atrocious and since their practice of selling consoles that they know are defective borders on consumer fraud imo.

How about these cheap bastards running MS just make every problem covered with a 3 year warranty and give out a new one. The amount of failed units they have had MS should be forced to ship out new ones and feel the pain of there profit dropping. Really to be honest I wish MS had to do that to the point they go bankrupt. Not to mention many other companies going under would be doing the whole world a favor.

This is SPAAARKSTEALTH (insert kick down well here)

I Have a Question.
If  you send in your xbox for repairs, and you get a new xbox. Does that mean that the new xbox we recieve could get all the problems like E-74, 3 Red Flashing Lights, Etc. ??

Yes.   There are reports all over this forum of people returning their replacement console for the same problems as the previous one.

I just got the E 74 message last night, and since I'm getting the new MW2 xbox, I was wondering if I would still be able to use the trasnfer cables and disc on my broken xbox to transfer to my new one. Or should I send it in and do it after?

It would have been better if you send the console for a repair.Besides,it is for free Big Smile [:D]

Regarding the Data Migration Kit, you can just use the MW2 console and plug it in to your old hard drive. that'll work

Your hard drive just pops off of your console.   You can then just attach it to your new MW2 console.

If you're still under warranty, send your console in (after taking the hard drive off) to get it repaired or replaced and then sell the one you get in return.  No point in letting the warranty go to waste.

Curious...Why is the E71 or E79 not covered under this...?

My second console just bricked on me. First time from the RRoD and this time for the E71/E79 error....
