Not necessarily. First of all: You can't put in a gigabyte card in your Xbox. The Xbox has an on-board ethernet port, that is not exchangeable.
Since the game programmers know, that the Internet is a comparably slow transfer medium, they optimize their networking code for slow connections.
And since most Internet connections for private users don't exceed 50 or 100 megabit / sec (for fibre and VDSL connections), there is no real use for gigabit networks in the Xbox.

Also: Depending on the cable connection, you won't also see big improvements with lag.
Most Xbox games are peer to peer network games. This means, even if you have a blazingly fast connection - if there are players with slow connections, they will lag on your fibre connection the same as with your current cable.

Switching to Fibre will however make marketplace downloads faster for you, improve the lag of your movements fo *other* players with a faster connection than yours, and you will be able to enjoy 1080p movies from the upcoming Zune Videomarketplace.

Hi, having a little trouble connectiong. I went onto the xbox website and made an account (not sure if this was the correct first step but meh, its done now). Xbox is connected to the net, downloaded an update so its deff working. when it asks me to sign in i put in my hotmail addresss and Id live password and it says that the account is associated with a different gamertag? eh? any help greatly appreciated :) thanks

You probably created (another offline) Gamertag on the console, and try to associate this with your (existing online) gamertag "DarkendSight".

What you need to do is to use the "Recover Gamertag" function from within your console, to download this online Gamertag to your console.

i would be suprised if you can give me an answer that will help me with my problem but here goes. i have run out of time on xbox live and have been trying to get back online but i only want to buy a months subscription for £4.99 online but i cant do this because microsoft is asking for a visa,master card or american express but since i have neither of these and i have mistro i cant buy a month online so how or were can i get a months subscription? please message me back asap on my gamertag thank you.

If you don't have a credit card, you can only buy the retail prepaid Live cards.
You could get a 3 Month card from Amazon for 12.96, effectively bringing down the price for one month to 4.32 instead of your 4.99.

i do have a credit card just not the one they are asking for and aswell i had a 48 hour free trial code and used it on here earlyer and it accepted it but it is not leting me onto xbox live still

Great thread! My question is this.
I have 2 X-box 360's. One is connected all the time at home, works just fine. No need to correct anything.
The other one I take with me on my travels and only play it locally. I'd like to connect it to live so it can upgrade itself to the new X-box screens and such.

I don't want to actually play it live but the old screens are in need of upgrading.
Will this have any adverse affect on my existing Live account? Will the two different machines mess things up or anything?

If it is just for updating, it won't mess up anything. Just plug it in your router, use a Memory Unit to go online with your Gamertag and off you go.

Great thread! My question is this: why i cant find people to play online in all of my games? (halo 3, turok, gow2, and many others), i am usin a TP-Link and, when i do the xbox live test, it is ok (at the beginning nat was moderate, but now, that i have open the ports, it does not show me the yellow triangle anymore).

I am using both methods:wireless and wire (not at the same time), so i dont know what is going on... any solutions? Thanks in advance for your help

hey man i tried your way of doing things but for some reason my computer doesn't have an IP addy so any ideas or tips because i've been struggling for months and i dont want to have to go out of my way to purchase a router on the off chance it won't work so yeah if you have any help it would be greatly appreciated

Wait, what? How do you connect the Internet then, if your PC supposedly doesn't have an IP address?

Please check again, by doing this:
Open a command prompt by pressing "Windowskey + R" (or by klicking "Start" and then "Run...").
In the small window enter "cmd" and press Enter (or click "OK")

In the black window type:
IPCONFIG
and press Enter.

This will list your PC's IP address(es).

Please post the first three Octets of this address obfuscating the last Octet here (e.g. like this "123.45.67.XYZ")

What if my router isn't WPA2 enabled? I've been using an Airport Express router for a couple years, and everything has worked fine. Now, today, after downloading the update through the xbox wireless adaptor, I can't connect anymore. The password to my wireless network hasn't changed, right? Just because WPA2 is supported, shouldn't have messed with my settings, right? Any ideas please?

Nothing. The adapter will automatically detect the encryption of your access point.
Only if your Access Point uses WPA2, the adapter will now try to connect with WPA2 and will need it's passphrase re-entered.

In the German Wikipedia it is said, that the Airport Express *does* support WPA2. Even if the password is the same, not the password is sent to the Airport itself. It is used to encrypt the messages already, and since the encryption scheme from WPA2 differs from WPA, the messages are now encrypted differently with the same password.

Just remove the old settings from your console, and reconnect again with proper WPA2 credentials.

It should work then.

I hate to burst your bubble but, it didn't work. My second console updated and all that but, it won't update my account or profile to any usable fashion. My second console says I need to change my ID. The support folks say thet are working on this problem. I e-mailed them to let me know if and when they correct the problem. I'm hoping when I go back into the other room and start my other console, it still lets me get back online.

Post edit time expires fast here. Okay! after several attempts I finally did get it to find my existing gamertag and update it on my second console. Must be some kind of updating time lag issue or something. My apologies to ArmimatorX. It did finally work. My second console is now fully updated with friends list and all. I'm back online Live.

I'm using a wireless router. Lately I haven't been able to connect to live. I keep getting an error message that says the DNS names can't be resolved. Any suggetions Arminator?

Do you connect your Xbox wirelessly?
Since you don't tell a lot about your network, try the following:
Turn your router off. Go to your Xbox, and go to the Network Settings at "My Xbox", and all the way right to System Settings.

There go to the advanced tab and choose to reset the Xbox network to default. Now turn off the console.

Turn on the router again, and wait until it has completely started.

Turn on the console again.
Is it able to connect now?

Hi, I just signed up for Xbox Live gold today.  I signed up online on my computer and not on my game console.  I'm using an Xbox 360.  I have my console hooked directly to my router(Linksys WRT54GS).  My console says that my "Xbox live is up and running" under the network settings tab.  I tested the connections and everything says its good.

When I go to the market place tab or any of the other tabs that access Xbox Live, it wants me to join Xbox live and set up an account.  I have already did all of this.  There is no place that allows me to sign in to Xbox live, just to join.

What do I need to do to fix this?

My problem is simmilar to this, I joined through this website (xbox.com) and when I try to join xbox live through the console it works just fine till I get to the gamer tag part. It says my gamer tag is already in use, well of course it is, I created it through the website and not through the console.. I just got my wireless adapter for the xbox today, so that's why I'm first trying to join xbox live through the console now..
