OK I think I’ve finally got it.
My problem with landing on carriers was that I would always come in too fast.
I would use air breaks (D pad up) but that would be too much of a drop in speed and would find myself adding power to get back up to what I think is an optimum landing speed. (160 kts)
I use this technique for landing on carriers:
Decrease power to 82% this will decrease the speed. (70% power is idle.)
When the speed gets to 300 kts, activate the tail hook.
Air breaks (D pad up) are applied for a few seconds. This will bring the speed to around 250 kts. Lower the landing gear and bring up the LAND HUD. I usually click the right thumb stick for a larger view.
With landing gear down, I reduce air speed again by using the right and left triggers together. Using the d pad up here drops speed too fast in my opinion due to the flaps already down in LAND mode.
Carrier landing runways are angled right to left.
I start moving the plane to the right to intercept the horizontal needle. Begin descent to get plane on the correct vertical glide slope. (Practice this on regular runway landings)
When horizontal path is intercepted, the needle will move all the way to the left side.
Reacquire the needle by making small adjustments to the left.
Make adjustments to speed and pitch by decreasing/ increasing speed and moving nose of plane.
At this point your speed should be about 170-180 kts.
Reduce power slightly and make adjustments as needed.
Before touchdown, cut the power to 70% (idle)
I hope this has been beneficial. Good luck.
