Carrier Landing Woes
I just got my copy from Gamefly today. Great game so far, I used to play Janes on the PC and am glad there's finally a semi-sim flight game on a console. Problem is, Gamfly doesn't send a manual. I played through the first two campaigns without a problem, but now I'm having problems with the carrier landing training mission. I have the glidepath figured out, but how do I approach horizontally? I know there's things on the HUD that I can't figure out without a manual. Any tips? And any other general tips from the manual that aren't on the in-game control map would be helpful too. Thanks.

Sorry, saw there was another post on this further down in the forum, but it didn't help. Search feature on here sucks.

After you've got you hook extended and gear down, just follow the ILS keeping the two displayed bars as a cross, to keep you on the glide slope and at the correct approach angle. Also keep one eye on the HUD AoA indicator to maintain the nose at the correct angle, whilst keeping the other eye on the rate of descent indicator. Once those are correct, all you've got to do is work the throttle to manage the correct approach speed. If you do all that, you'll eventually here 'Call the Ball' and hopefully you'll catch the third wire on the Carrier.

A lot of what you learnt with regards to carrier landings in Janes F/A-18E (if that's the Janes title you were refering to and not Janes USAF), can be equally applied to OGF. Just remember that a carrier landing is best described as a 'Controlled Crash' Smile [:)]

The manual for OGF is useless, so you're not missing much. The manual leaves many questions unanswered.

Re: Carrier Landing Woes

Dont worry about that, it doesnt matter.

If you cant get it horizontally right you may want to try flying to the right of the formation of ships and then use the two lines (keep them as a cross in the middle of you HUD) to fly it in.

"Call the ball" has to do with the glideslope you need to be on to land the plane on the carrier.  There is a system on the left side of the carrier called an Optical Landing System and it shines lights to let the pilot know where he is in relation to the deck,  also known as a "Meatball" because of the circle shaped and red lights.  It works with the same idea as the crosshair on your HUD.  So the carrier is just telling the pilot to confirm that he can see the lighting for the glideslope.  Then,  the pilot (if he see's it) will then say "I have the ball".

Re: Carrier Landing Woes
Finally got it, after many many attempts. Great feeling, but it will certainly take alot more practice until I can do it multiple times with confidence. Loving this game.

Re: Carrier Landing Woes

Good job!  I've had Over G since the release and while I haven't crashed into the carrier much,  I still overshoot and have to go around sometimes.  Keep practicing.

As in real life, once you hit the carrier deck, push the throttle fully forwards to the stops and light the burners. This procedure is used in case you miss the wires and have a 'Bolter' on your hands. This actually happened to me online. My mate was flying behind me watching my approach to the carrier and I missed the wire. Luckily my procedure saved me from rolling off the end of the deck and into the sea. Smile [:)]

Auto Land does work for carriers as well.  (Of course, this does not apply to the carrier landing training mission.)
