New Pilot needs help
I decided to buy this game becuase even though it gets bad reviews from the sites, the reviews from players praise the game.I like a challenge but dont know anything about flying and this game is prooving very difficult. There really isnt any kind of training on basic things like evasion etc. What im looking for is some kind of walkthrough or tips for the first few missions to help me get aquainted with the basics...can anyone help me out? There is obviousley no point in me going online yet as i dont even know what speed i should be cruising at,what altitude, etc etc.I do love the look of the game though and im shure it will be cool to get into a squadron in the future..thanks

Re: New Pilot needs help

First, most importantly, go into Settings -> Game Settings, and change your controls from Arcade to Real.  I also recommend changing your Weapon Selection from Auto to Manual, and enabling Auto Landings.

Although there is not a lot of in-game help/guidance, there are lots of important details that are covered in the manual.  You might want to skim through it and get a feel for what it covers, so you can refer there for more specific answers, as needed.

Most questions people ask are already answered on the forums.  Instead of repeating the answers here, I'll give you links to the more commonly asked questions, to get you started in the right direction:

See the list of Planes/Achievements to learn exactly what missions to fly, to unlock each plane.  It will take 2-3 times through the game, to unlock everything.  Most importantly, unlock the F-22A (Area 7 Submission 10) on your first pass through, as it will make other missions a bit easier, especially on Expert.

The basics of missile evasion is covered on page 15-16.  For more tips, see the How to dodge missiles thread.  There are also some more advanced evasion (and dogfighting) threads that you can find on the forum, once you get a feel for the basics.

There are several FAQs Walkthroughs (e.g. good for when you get stuck on the Canyon mission):

Carrier Landing tips (in general, you can use Auto Land, to land automatically, except for the Carrier Landing training mission, and the Multiplayer Arena central base.):

If you need help getting the F-22, see How to get the F-22... the easy way.

Finally, I think the most-asked question is about the Challenge Arena, and Big Bosses.  We have a whole 11-page thread all about that :)

Hopefully, this will get you started!  Good luck and have fun!

Like you, I had to learn alot but here is what I have learned, hope it helps.

1. When you get ready to taxi, hit the back button on the controller and that will bypass the taxi part and place you directly on the runway.

2.  When you take off you need to be going at least 150kts and then as soon as you are airborn press the down button on the d pad.
3.  Afterburners use lots of fuel so use them to take off and when evading until you get used to how they work.
4.  When the tower says,"you are clear for departure, Climb to angles 3 on heading 297.6" they mean for you to climb to an altitude of 3000 feet and head in the direction of 297.6 on your hud. Dont follow the heading because I think it is the same for every mission.  Fly toword the red dots on your map.
5.  As soon as the mission starts and you are airborn, press the "Y" button to switch to radar mode for your missles.  This will help you find the enemy.  You will hear the words "lock" and you should see a large green arrow appear on your hud. turn the left thumb stick in the direction of the green arrow.
6.  The two triggers are for turning the tail rudder on the jet.  I would practice just flying under the challenge mode under the strike mission with no foes to get the hang of flying.  As far as the speed of the air craft goes, it really varies from plane to plane.
7.  If you are climbing and hear "Chaff/flare" it means that you have been locked up by the enemy and because you are climbing probably dont have enough speed to outrun the missle that is now closing in on you.
8.  When a plane fires a missle at you, you will see a little flashing red dot on the radar screen to the left bottom of the hud.  When the dot gets to the inner most circle of your radar start tapping the "B"button on the controller and dont stop until the red dot goes away or you get killed.  To evade look at the direction of the missle is coming and dive for more speed and hit afterburners and try to turn away from the missle.  On the hud you will see the words "Launch" and the hud will also flash red.  If the word Launch is not there, it means an infrared missle has been fired at you and you should cut your engines and try to dodge the missle.  By going afterburner you give the IR missle a better target and you WILL die.
9.  One of the best planes to use is the f-16 until you get the f22. It is light, fast and gets the job done. However that is only MY oppinion.
10.  Look for posts from GrayWolf and FeralKitty under the forum search.  They are very helpful and there advice has really helped me. I am now Ace Sniper with an f22 and loving life.
11.  If you are flying and your plane is vibrating, it might mean you have hit the up part of the d pad which has engaged your brake and this is a bad thing or you are trying to turn to tight.

Hope this helps you.  This is a GREAT game. Just give it a chance.

Hey, Daddio, those are some awesome tips!  I wouldn't have thought of covering any of that... thanks for mentioning them all!

The tower is telling you to switch your radio frequency from tower control to the squadron frequency.  (You don't literally have to do this -- it's just meant as a realistic touch.)

Re: New Pilot needs help
As for the good community, you are dead on. Most of the people that give this game a chance really really love the game.  It is just so much different from the arcade shooters in that it forces you to really think about things later in the game. Area 7 sub mission 10 is the perfect example.  You curse the level but admire it at the same time. I dont even want to think about H*ll mode right now. Having to much fun in challenge mode.  I have feeling H*ll mode is very much like the D-Day mission on Veteran setting in Call of Duty 2.  That was no fun but gave you a great sense of achievement when you finally beat it.  Most everybody that loves this game is willing to help in anyway because we needed help when we first started.  Keep at it and check your six often. lol

Also if you're having trouble performing the evasive maneouvres, just hook up with someone online, and they can show you. They're easier to understand visually than technically, to begin with.

Hm... seriously who checks the date of Posts that appear up top? And who would dig up a 2 year old one!?

Why would you go 7 - 8 pages back, find an unreplied post and reply to it?
