Re: Busted Disc Drive Club
I was playing about 4 hours of Tenchu Z when it came out. The next morning when I was starting to play Shadowrun I heard a stange noise coming from the 360, then it ejected it. I then pushed the button on the 360 toclose it and I got the unreadable disc on the dashboard tray. I tried other games and formats but now it doesn't read anything.

This is my second 360. I had it for about four months, but apparently M$ doesn't recognise the new consoles manufacturing date. They go by the original. So it had past. So I got pissed off and bought a PS3. I will get my 360 fixed, but if I can get a game for the PS3 instead of the 360 I will.

I call the 360 the four hour console now.

I'll jump on this list for two consoles down due to the disk drive, original one lasted about five months, the refurb lasted about eight days. I'm waiting for my third to arrive.

Yeah, tell me about it.  Here's another fun fact too, when the second one died I called to enquire about my warranty, I hoped that the refurb would come with a new one year warranty or at the very least it would be a year from the date that I purchased my 360 new which was 5-4-07.  This was not the case, they told me my warranty expired in Jan of 08, that's 8 months of warranty, luckily I have my receipt so the year warranty applies but when I receive my third console I have to fax the receipt along with the new Serial #, I'm also having the warranty extended 2 months for the time the console has been sent away for repairs.

Anyways the moral of the story is, if you have a refurb with disk drive issues within your one year warranty, you need to notify the help line of your original buy date and also tell them you want more warranty for when the console was not even in use because it was away for repair.

I have a non-refurb with disc drive issues. I'm sending it in as soon as I get the coffin. As far as I know, they didn't mess up my warranty. It shows my date of purchase (early June) on their site as the start of my warranty.  Hopefully it doesn't mysteriously change. Unfortunatlely, I lost my receipt even though I knew someday I would need it and I swear I had it somewhere...

It is disheartening to hear they didn't give you another year on your warranty. Perhaps that only happens when you are out of warranty and you have to pay for the repairs?

Maybe I'm a little paranoid, but make sure to follow up regarding your warranty after you get the refurb, if possible get something that states your current warranty expiration just to be safe.  In my opinion you can't be too careful considering how many of these things they have to deal with.

My Disk Drive Is Detecting Games As DVDs But Will Eventually Work After A Few Attempts. Is It Worth It To Send In My Xbox And Risk Getting Someones Refurbished RROD Xbox? (If It's Still Under Warranty)

With My Current Xbox I Can At Least Play After A Few Attempts (For Now).

As long as it is working (and not scratching your discs) I would probably hang on to your original Xbox for as long as possible. Just make sure you leave enough time at the end of your warranty to send it in without risking having to pay for it.

You're going to have to make the call, but it's either a mostly-working console or a month without one at all. And when you do send it in eventually, maybe they will have expedited the process or maybe they will be using nicer DVD drives than they are currently.

Mine is starting to make horrible noises AGAIN and I'm occasionally getting disc read errors once in a while.
Sent my last 360 (3rd) in because the disc drive gave out and BROKE back during summer guess I'll be sending this one in soon also.
Its putting rub marks on the discs and I know M$ will not send replacement games right ?
I really cant beleive that Xbox Live .com / M$ let all these posts just sit here and just keep sending people back bad 360's.

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club

I'm waiting on my coffin to come in the mail as we speak. It started while I was playing COD4 online. The map would start to load and then I'd get the "disc unreadable" message and it would kick me back to the dashboard. Over a couple of weeks, it did this maybe twice. I'd procede to take the disc out and look at it and see perfect lines circling on my disc. I took it to the bathroom and got a couple pieces of tissue and wiped it down with warm water and dried it with tissue also. Perfect disc. No marks at all. It's like the disc drive left a couple perfect lines of residue on my disc. I'd put the disc back in and it was fine. A couple of days ago I fired up my 360 and it would'nt load any discs at all. DVD's, all my games......nothing worked, "Disc Unreadable" is all that comes up on the disc tray icon on the dashboard.

I've read some posts on here and I see that some of you are disappointed in the disc drive malfunctioning. Most of you have valid reason to do so. My 360 is a launch system. I've had it for almost 2 years. Thats 2 years of the disc drive loading and streaming constantly while im playing my games for hours a day. These drives weren't really designed to be used and abused the way developers and us gamers put them through. You also have to realise that Microsoft and all the others(Sony,Nintendo, etc) put the cheapest hardware in their systems to try and keep costs low so they can be competitive. There will always be problems with these mechanical mediums in gaming. I just hope I get back a 360 that can last as long as this one.

Can anyone tell me why it stops reading games and not movies? It would seem if it was a bad drive it wouldn't read anything. Maybe it's a software issue. Got mine back 2 months ago and the same game that started the prob gave me a dirty disc error today and that's how it starts. Rebooted and it was fine, but I'm nervous now.

Well, I'm not sure, but after Halo 3 that's when I started reading about these errors and that's when it started happening to me. And it has been getting worst.

I guess I should add that I called tech support and they want me to pay $100 since my console is a year and a half old. While I don't have a problem paying for a repair after the one year warranty expires, regardless if the issue seems to be very common. I do have a problem with paying 25% of the total cost for just an optical drive. I will wait since I'm still able to play games, hopefully it won't develop into scratching discs. But I am considering buying a drive through a modding site and modding it instead for half the money.

Sign me up for your club please.

I have occasionally had the "grrrrr spinspinn grrr" sound since I got my 360. Less frequently I also got the "Read error: Clean the disc" error. Now the diskdrive spins continously during gameplay and has started to give med the read error message continously. Sounds like a mechanical breakdown of the drive.

As this happened one week after my warranty ran out, I'm kind of frustrated. Over the years I bought 5 classic Xbox consoles (for myselfe and xmas presents). All of these had defect lasers within 2 years. I can't help but to blame MS for using cheap and very unreliable components in their hardware, and I have become very sceptical about buying a new Xbox 360. Having a big collection of games for mye 360 it sounds like the best choice is to get a new 360. But what is the point if I just have to keep buying new consoles all the time?

Seems like I'm going to defect and return to Sony.

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club

My launch 360 had occasional (about every hour or so on average) unreadable disk errors for months until it finally croaked (RROD).  The replacement I received had a manufacture date of Nov 2007, but it never worked right.  after several days of unreadable disk errors after playing for 5-20 minutes I RMA'd it.  I'm currently awaiting arrival of that unit.  Hopefully this one will actually work.  Third time's a charm, right?

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club
My 360 has been having problems with discs stopping spinning during gameplay, followed by the screen locking up. I get no errors on the ring of light, just a "hardware failure" light on my wireless ethernet adapter. It's weird because it only happens with certain games (COD4, Bioshock, the multiplayer mode in Gears of War, among others). In Call of Duty 4 I can't even get past the first level without it freezing. It mostly happens during load times...for instance, at the very end of the first mission in COD4 I hear the disc drive making some less than pleasant noises and then it stops spinning altogether. A couple seconds later the screen locks up followed closely by the sound stopping. In Bioshock everything runs fine until I try to hack an object. Sometimes when I hack something, the disc makes it's usual helacious noise followed by the lock up and my irritated shouts of profanity. I'm not really all that willing to shell out 100 or so clams to fix a problem that shouldn't be happening. Darn this world! Alright, I'm done venting. Add me to the list.

I get to join the club.  I had it occur once a few weeks ago one time,  I put in a different game and i heard the drive start to kick itself back into gear and then was fine up until last week.  It decided to officially STOP working.  For two different reasons, this is second time now that i've had to send in a console after the fall update.  The last time truely was due to it, this time i wouldn't be surprised.  But it sucks having to deal with something again.  Especially when it is almost exactly one year later.

Just happened to me today. MS wants me to spend another 100 dollars because my warranty is out. HA Were all idiots if you ask me. We buy a product from these greedy bastards, then when it breaks because of there cheap defective equipment we pay them another 100-200 dollars to fix it, only to get it back for it to break again...I'm seriously starting to think about taking legal action about this.

Re: Busted Disc Drive Club

Add me to the club. I got my new 360 elite on Nov 3 2007 and today a mere 2 months and 12 days later i get to join the club.  I turned on my xbox today with no disc in the drive, i opened the drive and inserted the disc and pressed closed as it began to read the disc i hear an awful grinding noise and immediatly ejected the disc to inspect. The disc appeared ok so i put it back in, this time it attempted to read but didn't, it responds exactly as if there is not a disc in the drive. The 360 has not moved since it was taken out of the box and has been in the verticle postion, I also tried laying it horizontal but get the same result. So i contacted xbox support and am going to ship it out as soon as possible. I also purchased the extended warranty from microsoft as soon as i got the console, due to my experience with xbox originals and 360s, and am now thanking the mighty cheeba for buying it, from what i can see it will be the best 60 bucks i ever spent!     While im ranting, honestly how often does the dvd drive in your pc fail, but yet they cant seem to make one that will last a year for the console.

 Should have joined months ago...

My 7th Xbox just blew up night before last right in the middle of a Team Slayer match. I'm expecting my coffin in a couple of days to do the whole replacement process all over again.

  • 1st Xbox - just froze... no RROD
  • 2nd Xbox - failed DVD drive (on delivery)
  • 3rd Xbox - same as second (on delivery)
  • 4th Xbox - really beat up, marked up, scratched up case (on delivery)
  • 5th Xbox - same as fourth (after they promised me a new replacement)
  • 6th Xbox - brand new replacement but only lasted 6 months... first RROD (Dec. 4th right after the update)
  • 7th Xbox - not a new replacement but in good working condition upon delivery... lasted only 22 days before my second RROD (Jan. 14th)

Well I bought GH3 on tuesday, it arrived thursday rolled through medium and half of hard, eat dinner, watch tv, then decided to play again.  And all i got was "unplayable" disc I tried dvds and other games - all unplayable.  So thank god I spent $100 on GH3 so I can spend another $100 on a repair...  I think I'll just buy a new core system from gamestop and trade in this broken one... Or maybe i'll just hang myself cause rope is cheaper.

I have just joined the club!

Big nasty crunching sound followed by me jumping across the room like superman to hit eject and my one day old Assassin's creed disc is shredded. Completely p'd off right now. It won't play anything, from games to dvds to cds....nothing! And...when there's nothing in the drive, it won't close...as if it's sticking it's tongue out at me...in a mocking way!

I can still get onto the dashboard and can access all arcade games and stuff but I didn't fork out over £300 to play arcade games....and guess what, the best part of all. I'm a month outside my warrenty as of yesterday!

I'm not bitter......I'm just really pissed off!!!

As you can see from my post above this one, I lost my console to the problem-disc-tray last night and thought I was in for some long phonecalls to MS to try an d get a free fix......but, I phoned Gamestation(where I bought the console on 27th dec 2006) and explained to the manager of the store about my consoles problem. He was more than helpful, telling me to bring the console down and he'd swap it for a brand new machine. I didn't take my cables and HDD with me so I just got the Console on it's own but I now have a new console with a HDMI port as well as another years warranty. yeah....... he's probly gonna sell the broken console, cuz he can get like 200-300 bucks for that, cuz he'll have his own dvd drive, and he can switch  it out with the one on ur sexbox, then, there's alot of technichal stuff, with the motherboard, and then its good as new. but he's nice giving u a new sexbox tho.
