Re: Why all the hate to the U.S. and MLS?

Im a huge Gunner fan from here in the states.  Sure the league here is not as good as many others but at least it is starting to pick up.... And there have been MANY new faces most of them latin players coming in the league.  And I laugh at my American brethren when they say "soccer" is for skinny wimps... Yea tell that to players like Sol Campbell, Gattuso,Kolo Toure in thier face.  ESPN is the ENEMY of football. They only show it and promote it to make $$$$.... This country has BRAINWASHED most of us into thinking soccer is weak and sports like baseball, american football, basketball are for "real men"

Over the years though we have been blessed with cable TV showing football from all over the world.

I haveFSC, setanta sports, Gol tv, FSin spanish, and espn deportes....... and if u cant find a match u wanna watch you can order it online through many websites.

So to all you foreigners from across the pond dont hate us Americans that really truly have love for the game.  Sure our league is inferior but maybe in the near future we will start to see quality.

So, are you ready for that 1 on 1 matchup, with your Mexican league team, that you challenged me to in that private email that you sent me?

Then again, like any respectable Mexican team, I'm sure you'll have loads of excuses, after I beat you, as far as why you lost to an American team, right?

Make sure you pick the team with Jared Borgetti on it so that I can see him lay around on the ground and cry after the game is over, lol.

Anyways, stop being eurosnobs and crapping all over our fun. Most of us already know the MLS is "lower-tier" league, but we still like it. Deal with it.

you ppl like it cos thats the only league you watch and never watch anything else

Are you at all in tune with what the American soccer audience watches or do you just get off on making stupid comments on message boards.

I'm a pretty big Serie A fan and like to catch as many Juventus matches as possible.

La Liga, Serie A and Bundesliga are all very popular here in the U.S and attract a very large audience when televised as does the World Cup and Euro's.

Yeah, the ref'ing was bad but the I very impressed with the level of play by both the MLS and Mexican teams.

I very much look forward to the day when MLS teams are allowed to compete in the Libertadores and Sudamericana, it would be another big step for club soccer in the U.S to compete in those tourny's. The Superliga was a step in the direction of competition between MLS teams and teams from Mexico and South America.

Clubs in the premiership are 120 or so years old in some cases and football is the main sport here and for some a way of life.

The name MLS inclused the word Soccer, which annoys most people who would call it Football, we dont call American Football something like Padded Rugby... another reason MLS i hated is due to how americans dont see 'soccer' as a cool sport and alot of the players in the leauge would have wanted to play baseball or 'american Football' not 'soccer'. whereas in most european countries football is by far the dominant and coolest sport.

The standard of games in the MLS (by no fault of its own) is also very poor and sometimes looks very much like the bottom leagues in England, for example alot of the goals are rebounds and lucky chances.

I also personally get annoyed watching most american sports with commentary due to the way stats and phrases are constantly used in the game, "Steven Gerrard is about 6'1 and 160 pounds" which to anyone who isnt american is worthless rubbish. Also other thing the commentator says are annoying too, i watched a game once and they couldnt understand why play had been stopped for an offside. It is also annoying how recent events such as David Beckham going over to the MLS has put the MLS into more of a global light, and when he manages to barely roll the ball into the opposing net from his own half people seem to think he is jesus or some magician, when my grandma could have scored that goal...

Also going back to my point about the history of the premiership using American terms in commentary and the names of the teams being very untraditional (which is often the american way in other sports which i understand) for example LA Galaxy and Chicago Fire, the names are so annoying...

Well, you have to break the sport down into terms that people can understand FIRST.

It does no good if you're using words like derby and pitch instead of rivalry and field, because then people are just going to get confused, then irritated and then they're going to change the channel which is the last thing that the MLS wants.

And like it or not it is SOCCER here in the U.S not FOOTBALL, because we had "our football" first, so it does no good to call it the same damn thing, because AGAIN, people are just going to get confused, and if you're marketing something then you need to be as clear as possible. So you can argue the soccer thing into the ground, but you're wasting your time.

Another thing, soccer is NOT just a European sport; that comment shows your arrogance. The last time that I checked it was played pretty well in countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia, Paraguay, Ecuador, Korea, Japan, China, Turkey etc.

Which brings me to my next point; the leagues best chance at improving comes from importing players from Mexico and South America which it has already done. There has been a pretty decent number of guys from Argentina into the league, just this year. This has brought guys like Juan Pablo-Angel, Schelotto, Gallardo, Blanco into the limelight of the league.

Beckham brought big publicity to the league but the better acquisition was probably Cuathemac Blanco from Mexico who was the MVP of the all-star game.

MonkRug I understand what you are saying fully and it was a good reply, but the things you said about being ignorant to football outside of Europe is ridiculous.

First of all the comment you made about the name soccer, is actually a very common argument that will never be settled, but you called me ignorant, which is what you are by calling football soccer. You see within embracing sport and the culture that comes with it the MLS should have taken the name that comes with this 'european game'.

Also the argument about european football is rubbish too, i didn't say that football was exclusively a European game but this is obviously where all the good and talented players come from areas such as south america..

The topic was also asking WHY people hate the US and MLS and so I gave reasons and opinions shared by people and myself to answer the poster. Also why you are talking about buying players and about other leagues is beyond me.

Also the standard of the games in the countries you listed is still not as good as most european countries.. and so living in England with one of the best Leagues in the world i felt that i was in a position where i could talk about varying standards of the game in comparison the the MLS. I did not say or intend to sound like the european leagues were the only ones in the world, i just felt they were good examples of the MLS being weaker and therefore hated by Europeans.

The only point i accept in your reply is about the terms you used, which is my ignorance towards a new audience to 'soccer'.

LOL; boy, your arrogance is never ending eh?

And soccer is not a European sport; it is a WORLDWIDE sport.

I suppose now you're going to try and convince me that none of the great civilizations in the Middle-East played a sport that consisted of kicking a round object into some sort of space or "goal" if you will?

I'm sure the Mesopotamians and Egyptians would disagree with you.

Sorry to be so short but I'm quite busy hating your "inferior" English civilization.

I don't really think the majority of Americans care about soccer

Europeans like to think that they *** us in soccer... which they do, but it's because we dont care

Growing up in the USA, you are more focused on sports like basketball, baseball, and football (american), and you don't really care about soccer. In Europe, soccer is the only thing they care about. Europeans dont seem to grasp the concept that Americans just dont care about the sport in general, and therefore just think we suck at it. The truth is, if this was the only good sport available for people in the USA, then we would *** the rest of the world in it too.

Well; tons of people in the U.S play soccer when they're kids, most simply stop playing when they start growing fuzz on their "parts".

I've played in amatuer leagues in Europe and Asia before and you always have to deal with the "oh, he's American and isn't gonna be that good" and then I'd proceed to put a move on some cocky Brit, Spaniard or Frenchman, run by 2 or 3 of their defenders and then bury it in the back of the sack then you'd hear "I guess he's played before".

Most guys in England can't get away from g-damn pub long enough to actually play the sport because that would require them to put their pint down and go out and breathe some fresh air.

Untrue, up untill a certain age, soccer is the most played sport in the U.S. Where do you think the phrase Soccer mom came from.

this football/soccer issue will go on forever.  us americans will never call football "football" because we obviously already have our "football".  and i can totally understand how the english can get upset by that fact alone, but come on get over it. it's not like we're forcing you guys to call it soccer. everybody who has ever watched an mls game knows how terrible it is, the mls games are the only games regularly broadcasted in HD here in the states and i STILL can't watch most of them. 0-0 draws are not the types of games i want to sit and watch for 90 mins.  i feel, since most TRUE fans and lovers of the sport respect what the english game has brought to the world, THEY should also respect what other cultures bring to the sport.

Re: Why all the hate to the U.S. and MLS?
here in the states football(soccer ) is not popular because many americans think it is boring. i grew up playing soccer but learned to love hockey more and football more. as i have gotten older i appreciated soccer because of the world cup and then hearing about arsenal through a friend. i watched some matches on cable and saw manu, real madrid , barcelona and my fav team arsenal play and i loved it because they make teh game fun. there are some boring teams in every league and MLS is full of boring teams in the eyes of most americans because it is too slow and a 1-0 game is bound to happen here and there and americans dont appreciate the game. i hear the same about my fav sport hockey here. the game has to be appreciated for what it is. ignorance messes up people perceptions. MLS has to bring more big money players to the league to gain fans from other countries. and keep bringing people like becks here to get the americans to enjoy the game. mls is slowly building up and it will take time. I am from philadelphia and i can tell you this, when we get our team, our fanbase will be rabid. we follow everything here. and if they market it right ,and if its afforable, the stadium will be packed. then in the future after a fan base is accomplished, the players will be brought in and the prices will go up and they will make their money. places like toronto, la , NY, and philly will always support their teams. If we can get Henry, ronaldo and other players here with name value , and get americans thinking its cool to love the beautiful  game , then it will slowly progress. My main thing is i love the premiership and spanish league. but most of all i love the champions league. it is awesome football. when manu, inter milan, ac milan, arsenal, real madrid, barcelona, bayern munich, celtic and many many more get into a tourney together, it is just teh best . and this dumb american loves it as much as american football, where here the Philadelphia eagles rule in my town.

this football/soccer issue will go on forever.  us americans will never call football "football" because we obviously already have our "football".  and i can totally understand how the english can get upset by that fact alone, but come on get over it. it's not like we're forcing you guys to call it soccer. everybody who has ever watched an mls game knows how terrible it is, the mls games are the only games regularly broadcasted in HD here in the states and i STILL can't watch most of them. 0-0 draws are not the types of games i want to sit and watch for 90 mins.  i feel, since most TRUE fans and lovers of the sport respect what the english game has brought to the world, THEY should also respect what other cultures bring to the sport.

Ha! Guess you can't stand Ligue 1 then, eh Jnez? Apparently that's worst league around for draws! Not like Spain; probably one of the most exciting around (even better than the Prem), although I prefer to watch Budesliga.

Anyways, going back to my previous comments on the MLS...we know it's not great, but the small core group of fans still love/like it. I really hope the team coming into Philly will do well. Seattle already has a rabid fanbase and long  tradition (for North American soccer, anyways).

well the french league has got alot of history and talent. just wish a different team would step up and show lyon how to lose.

i live in portland, or and i've seen plenty of sounders/timbers games. the management already made a good first step in keeping the club name, so hopefully for seattle's fans sake they continue on the right path. being an american i will always support homegrown talent and clubs, but with so much higher quality games overseas and down south it is hard to spend time watching mls games.

I agree. I love watching MLS and USL games, but when Europe starts, it's really nice to see that quality of play. We watch Bundesliga every weekend (when the league is going), and it's sometimes a let-down watching my beloved TFC play the same day. The pace of top tier leagues is so much better than MLS.
That being said, MLS does have it's share of spectacular goals, especially from set pieces. Just look at De-Ro and the some of the ones he's scored over the years.
Did you hear about Kellar signing with Seattle for next year? That's a really, really good signing for Sounders FC, even if Casey is kind of old.
