Re: This Disc Is Unreadable... Post Here If This Happens To You

I have my second copy of Madden 07, and it will not work correctly.  The first one gave disc read errors, this one now flat out reboots my console and then the DVD tray will not open or read.  It can take an upwards of an hour for the drive to finally open up.  I have no idea, but it seems to be Madden 07 destroying this.  I have the Toshiba drive with a manufacturer date of 8/2/2006.

Is anyone else experiencing their XBOX360 not opening the DVD drive after madden crashes their XBOX360?

I'm on my second system, and I don't think it's the system, I think Madden is really *** up the XBOX and I dunno, I guess after a half hour or so it finally lets me access the DVD tray.

This is happening to me all the time now and I am on my second 360.  This is serious BS.  Here is what the help page for this problem says...

Power off and unplug your console, then remove the Hard Disk Drive unit and any attached Memory Units, then reconnect your console and try the disc again. If this appears to resolve the issue, power down and disconnect your console, re-attach the HDD and/or MU, then delete any saved games for the game title in question.

OH!  So maybe I just have to delete all my saved games!!!  GREAT!  Thanks so much Microsoft.  I haven't tried this yet but I will probably end up deleteing all my games and the *** still won't work.

I just picked up the Xbox 360 a week ago, and I have about 5 games.
NBA 2k7 has a weird clicking thing and I noticed that the loading times are a little off. But no error.
I picked up Fight Night Round 3 - I noticed the loading times are way off, turned it off. Turn it on, and I noticed I get an error. First it says to read the DVD, and then I put it in again, and it says to clean the disc.   I retry it a couple of times and it works after that..... but it makes a clicking noise too.

How common is this problem?  Any solutions?

I also get the "To play this disc, put it in an xbox 360 console" when I play Fight Night Round 3. I haven't had this issue with other games (Gears of War, NBA 2k7, Sneak King, Viva Pinata, Ghost Recon Adv Warrior, Arcade Live)...

Quick update. I exchanged Fight Night to EB. It was a used copy and it didn't seem to have any scratches, just a light amount, nothing serious, and they gave me another copy, which had some smudges.

The game now works like a charm.  Which means the 360's lens is way too sensitive.

This has happened to me on GoW. It just started happening, I can see sorta a scratch, but nothing bad like other games of mine, the game is brand new too, and I handle it perfect. It don't do it with any other of my games though, but still does it with the HDD off my console. Should I get a new game and see if it works? (new GoW?)

This is the ABSOLUTE same thing that is happening to me on gears of war. even with my memory unit out, it still does it. IVE ALREADY SENT MY XBOX BACK ONCE!!!!

Re: This Disc Is Unreadable... Post Here If This Happens To You

My second console is rampant with this behavior, the first one was perfect until I hooked up the ridiculous VGA cables that ruined it permanently, but that is another story.

Long story short about the disks not loading--I simply keep the 'A' button pressed while the disk is reading, and it has worked every time so far.  It now happens with any game, and it is really causing me to question what the *** is wrong at MS if this is still going on a year later.  This console was manufactured in 10/2006, my other one, 10/2005.  I yank off the HDD, and games load as if there has never been any sort of problem whatsoever.  And if I have to 'unplug and plug' all cables back in, I seriously wonder how safe this console really is--is there some charge buildup that needs to be grounded out?  Why is it that every solution seems to be 'just unplug and plug back in the cables'?  To *** with that, how about fixing the crap?

My first one has been repaired, all I have to do now is arrange some way to get it--I work all day about 20 miles from home, and simply wont be around.  Once I get the 'old' one back, I am taking the other back to Best Buy, burning up my 70 dollar 'single use warranty' and getting the voucher, and then not getting one thing XBOX 360 related, like a PS...whatever.

Re: SV: This Disc Is Unreadable... Post Here If This Happens To You

My console has destroyed two of my games: gears of war and oblivion, a $150 value. I've gotten my console replaced by calling 1-800-4myxbox, the xbox support line, and my games replaced by the retailers. What I would suggest is to examine the play side of your disc for fairly thick scratches of a circular nature around the entire disc. This would indicate a faulty console. I reccommend that Anyone having this problem should contact 1-800-4myxbox and seek a console replacement, make sure you make note that it happens with multiple games. Perhaps if enough people call about this issue, they will look into it further, because to my knowledge, xbox 360 disc drives do not have protective pads inside to prevent scratches on cd's. Even with a healthy console, an accidental nudge to your console can render a game unplayable, due to the disc becoming unstable and coming in contact with the inside of the drive ( normal drives with pads would prevent this from happening ) . Unfortunately, xbox will not replace your games, hopefully you have your receipts and some understanding store managers. I hope this helps, and remember, never move your console while playing, and if you haven't moved it and still have this problem, get your console replaced. Good luck.

Re: SV: This Disc Is Unreadable... Post Here If This Happens To You
A few further notes: if you experience disc read errors Only if the hard drive is place on your console, this means that you have a damaged save file. This is a problem caused pretty much at random, and is a universal xbox 360 problem. To fix this, remove old save files up to the point where you have only your valued ones remaining (if you use multiple save files). If you use only one save file, or if it turns out to be the damaged one, unfortunately, you will have to delete it. And also, If you find circular scratches around your disc, this is not a disc design, and that would mean that EA was not responsible. If you find your disc to be Completely clean, try deleting your save files. If nothing works, have your console replaced. If a new console doesn't work, then it is in fact a problem with this particular game. Although it may seem that many people have this problem with this game, it also happens with just about any game. This problem is spread all over the internet, and is usually caused by either moving the console during game play, or by a faulty console. A final note: If you have any pets, and this may sound like a joke, but I'm dead serious - If you have any pets, when you pause and go to the washroom, or wherever it may be, take some type of precaution that they don't walk into, rub up against, or jump on, etc.. your xbox 360 console. I had a game mutilated because my foolish cat decided to rub up against my console and knock it over. I'll keep checking back, and if there is something else I can help you with, keep posting; I'll do my best.

Re: SV: This Disc Is Unreadable... Post Here If This Happens To You

I get the "freezing with horrible grinding noises" problem with Fifa 07.  It usually waits until 5 minutes before the end of a match to happen, although sometimes it happens straight away at the EA Games splash screen.  I've had 2 replacement discs but this had not made any difference and the disc does not get physically damaged.  After ejecting and reinserting and can sometimes get an hours play out of it (if I'm lucky) before it happens again. Sad [:(]

I don't get the problem with any other game, only Fifa 07.

Keep a soft cloth handy and regularly clean your discs, because even the tiniest scratch, even if you can't see it, might prevent your xbox 360 from reading it. Xbox 360 has a horrible reader, and is way too sensitive. Get your console replaced, just for the *** of it, to see if it works, and if still it does not, the game you're trying to play is a piece of crap : )

Re: SV: This Disc Is Unreadable... Post Here If This Happens To You
Not related to this particular game, but I'm having this problem as well, although it has been rare fortunately. Twice during my playthrough of Gears of War and a three or four times in my playthrough of Dead Rising. It doesn't full on crash, it just says it can't read the disk and then tosses me to the dashboard. It's REALLY freaking annoying when it does because in games such as Dead Rising, yeah, you can loose tons of work because it decides to *** the disk read before you save.

The Gears of War disk is absolutely pristine. Just opened the box. Looked fine when I took it out after the error too. Dead Rising has two thin scratches through it which really bothers me because I know it was caused by the system given that it was removed from the case once and was very carefully put into the system and didn't leave until I was finished with it.

I honestly have no idea what the *** is causing it. Anyone notice any difference in errors depending on if the system is vertical or horizontal? For the record, mine is vertical.

Re: SV: This Disc Is Unreadable... Post Here If This Happens To You

Since it's happening with multiple games either:

1) You move the console while playing and cause the crap *** console to scratch your disks Or:
2) You have a faulty console like me, and should call 1-800-4myxbox to get a replacement.

Regarding Gears Of War, that game is faulty anyway, and people with flawless discs (including myself, before it got mutilated by my console, have had issues with it anyway. Explain it to your retailer and try to get a fresh copy from them. Who knows how many copies you'll go through.. if you want to play it enough, just keep trying.
If you're interested, mine is vertical and scratching disks, too. I don't think that's the issue, but who knows.
They won't replace your games btw, so you'll have to talk to whomever you bought it from.
They will replace your console, though, so if you're sure you haven't been moving the console while playing, give them a call.
X_X, almost a week has gone by and I still haven't got my replacement console : /
Oh well. Good luck with your games.

I have had this problem with every game I own, or have rented since the day I got the console, 3/2006. Console is horizontal, no scratching and in a very "breathable" position. When I called the xbox support line this is what they had me do to try and "fix" the problem: Unplug system, remove faceplace, jam a paperclip (a paperclip is exactly what he told me to use) into one of the 2 round holes near the dvd drive (could not tell me which one) and either push a button or turn a gear in said hole, depending on which kind of drive is there, in order to manually eject the drive tray. Pull it out, push it back in. Thats it, pretty simple huh? Guess what......   it didnt work.

I just had this problem, and I can not play ANY discs.  No games, No DVD's... NOTHING.  I never bumped my xbox, nudged it, anything.  The console just totally crapped out.  I can play demos, access the harddrive, etc., I just can't do anything from the dead DVD drive.  This is very frustrating.  Microsoft support is going to repair/replace the unit for free, but it's still a fiasco to have to ship it to them, etc.

For those of you trying to figure out what causes this problem, my Xbox has a manufacture date of Sept. 2006.  Hopefully Microsoft gets their DVD drive problems figured out.

Disc Unreadable freeze has happend to me numerous times. First I thought it was just a game/disc problem but then it began to happen more and more, and with numerous games. I also get a strange and FRUSTRATING message with some games: when I insert the disc, the drive fails to boot it and then a white screen appears saying: "To play thisgame, please insert it into an X-Box 360 console! Well, where the **** do they think I'm inserting it?!? Anyway, clearly HD problem, as none of the discs have even a scratch. So I'm returning my X-Box. Very sad...

I just bought a new 360 on Sunday (first one).  I brought it home and put in the Madden 07 that came in the box and I got the unreadable disc error.  Got it 7-8 times before it finally loaded up.  I tried rebooting and re-inserting the disc and it finally worked.

I then decided to buy Lost Planet yesterday (NEW).  After about 15 minutes of playing it locked up during a cut scene and gave me the DRE.  Brand new console and two brand new games and they both DRE on me.

Re: This Disc Is Unreadable... Post Here If This Happens To You
Happened to me with NHL 2k7.  Played it for about a week before I received the "Disc is Unreadable error"  I took the game out to find quite a few fine, perfectly circular scratches, put the game back in and it loaded fine until I selected "Quick Game"  at which point it spent a large amount of time trying to load before giving me the error again.  I read online that this had to do with moving the console while it was on, but I've never moved my console with a game in it, let alone with it turned on.  The only vibration the thing gets is the vibration it creates.  I was able to return the game the first time.  About two weeks after exchanging the game it happens again so I call Microsoft and they tell me the ONLY way this could have happened is if I moved the console and because of MY NEGLIGENCE, they can't refund my game.  Accusing your customers of lying is a great way to keep business!  I've only owned my 360 for about 6 weeks and have a Toshiba-Samsung drive.  I'm going to try a disc doctor and hopefully that will work.

It is strange, however, that only one of the other three games I own has been scratched(Burnout Revenge).  The scratch didn't affect Burnout, but it has affected both copies of NHL 2k7.
